The scene when Iris was tied up in the chair after Josh put her to sleep not only elicited empathy from me but definitely some emotion. Iris was so frightened, confused and agitated that one couldn't help but feel real emotion for her. This was the second time I've seen this actress, and suffice to say she was outstanding and clearly elevated an already good film. Sophie Thatcher is quite gifted.

And it definitely ended up being successful like Longlegs. People went crazy online talking about how no one would be ready for what the film shows. And that definitely created hype and now it has some Oscar noms. Need trailers to be more like the substance for sure.

This is why I don’t watch trailers! The only trailer I saw for this movie was the very first teaser and that’s it. And the first teaser gave me the impression that the plot might be about a woman that’s forced to be a robot and the twist was that she actually was human. So everything was a surprise for me and it was a lot of fun!

Agreed! Teasers only, no more trailers I'll usually decide if I want to see a movie based on the teaser anyway, if I don't sometimes I'll watch the trailer but it's not often I change my mind on a movie, so they don't really serve a purpose for me.

i felt like this whole movie was weirdly uninterested in maintaining mystery, even beyond the marketing. like why are we cutting straight from a fight scene to her stumbling back to the house covered in blood? let me at least pretend to go "omg is she gonna make it?? is she gonna kill him?" it was fun but i wish it pushed the tension a bit more!
@moe-gy5se
@moe-gy5se 3 күн бұрын
i actually really liked that they cut to her being covered in blood. i think if they just showed the full thing it wouldn’t have hit as much for me, the violence and mystery weren’t the draw to me so much as the emotion behind it. cutting to her covered in blood and then doing flashbacks to the death did a lot more for me emotionally than just immediately watching the action

I almost went in blind. I avoided all the trailers. I saw the teaser I think with the hand over the candle. From that I thought the movie was about a guy hypnotizing this girl. Then a day before I saw the movie, I saw a YT video on box office reports that ruined the "twist". Fortunately, it's a good movie that didn't need the "twist" to make or break the movie.

I didn’t see anything but the teaser so I didn’t know the twist. When I found out in the movie I almost walked out because I thought it will be a lit more mature psychological thriller and I was annoyed as hell. So I actually think they were smart with the marketing because this concept is difficult to not know about and then try to take seriously.

also 100% agree regarding the light handed themes, that’s what i talked about in my letterboxd review! the message is interesting but part of me wishes they dug deeper into it and focused on the concept of men being an oppressive conglomerate constantly seeking control. what we get is a step in that direction but it still ultimately tries to distinguish between the good men™️ and the bad men™️, a distinction a female filmmaker probably wouldn’t feel the need to make. so, yes, it’s a feminist film… i just personally wish they were more radical with those themes!

I actually have to disagree. I loved how the trailer and the poster gives out the “twist” because the film showcases that it doesn’t depend on the twists and surprises but how they crafted and presented the film in entirety. The Rotten Tomato consensus perfectly pins what I really love about this: “A fiendishly clever contraption that doesn't rest on the laurels of its twists” because it has more to offer than just its twists.

Agree on the trailers & poster. I saw the teaser & was like, some kind of horror, Sophie Thatcher, I'm in. Then I unfortunately saw the full trailer at Wolfman & was like WTF! Whoever decided that it's good marketing to have your first act reveal spoiled in the poster and trailer should be fired. While not a masterpiece, I enjoyed the movie & thought its themes had more in common with ExMachina & Blade Runner than the typical "abusive relationship" tropes that are so common these days. I liked that you could have switched the roles of Josh and Iris around, or made them both of the same "sex" and it wouldn't change the plot at all. It's more about what is it to be human & when does a machine deserves to be treated humanely, than the typical relationship power dynamic.
@noelkempster
@noelkempster 3 күн бұрын
I think its similarity to Ex Machina made it lack punch for me because the ending of Ex Machina is so good and horrifying (the concept at least) and the ending here with her in the car was kind of cheesy in my opinion. But I agree that it was a fun movie and it was much funnier than I’d expected!
@DR_DOOM_3298
@DR_DOOM_3298 3 күн бұрын
@@noelkempster It's definitely a less high-minded approach to the theme as compared to ExMachina & Blade Runner, but it still had me thinking as we barrel ahead with AI how "lifelike" dose a machine have to be before it's no longer ethical to treat it as just a thing.
@noelkempster
@noelkempster 3 күн бұрын
@ oh I absolutely agree I think the concept was solid, I just found the execution to be lacking a bit more than I had been hoping for. Maybe I just was upset with how predictable I found the plot beats and I kept hoping for something to really wow me like Ex Machina. But it’s definitely a great and pretty relevant concept as we are much closer to this kind of thing than we were when those other films came out.

I really would have loved if they had released different trailers (esp ones where we don't know the spoiler) but I do wonder if they had the trailer cut to not reveal the spoiler/essentially main premise of the movie and then perhaps screened it to early audiences who might have felt like excluding that from marketing would make people feel "tricked" or if there were worries about us going into it without that information...again, I personally would have preferred it without the spoiler, but that's something I've been thinking about!

I absolutely loved this movie and took 2 of my friends who aren't usually into horror to see it and they enjoyed it too! I was worried at first because there's been quite a few attempts at this trope in recent years but this movie honestly did it perfectly imo. I managed to avoid most of the trailers but still knew about the first twist, however.... SPOILERS BELOW I was genuinely surprised by the reveal that Patrick was also a robot, I heard a few gasps in the theatre too when it was revealed. I think I was so focused on waiting for the reveal about Iris that I didn't even pay attention to any strange ways Patrick was acting initially. I also agree that the death scenes were mostly unexpected which I thought was great as you assume most of them will end up dead somehow but having it come out of nowhere still adds that surprise element to it.

if they'd just left the trailer at the initial ones, where they didn't reveal anything and had you wondering if Iris is human or not rather than just flat out revealing it in the trailer...i would've given it 5/5 stars but it lost half for having bad marketing

I agree to an extent mainly for this movie. When I saw the teaser I honestly did not want to see it cause I was eh whatever. Then when you see the 2nd trailer when they reveal the truth about Iris and I was way more interested in seeing it and actually got me to see the movie

I thought I’d seen the actual trailer, but it must have only been the teaser. I was very nicely surprised by the twist (for once) and enjoyed that it was revealed early on. Companion & Abigail are both movies that should not have revealed the “twists” in the trailer 😐

I was very upset at the trailer spoiling the “twist”, but the twist being revealed so early softened the blow for me. I won’t forgive the Abigail marketing though. The twist came around almost an hour into the movie. While it did have an interesting effect on my viewing experience (knowing that she was a vampire the whole time), I was grossly disappointed in the marketing. I’ll forgive Companion mainly because the twist certainly wasn’t the biggest one in the movie and it was so enjoyable overall.

I saw only 2 seconds of the first teaser and then the movie synopsis on the fucking theater website gave away the twist to me. So pissed about that since I'd avoided it entirely besides that

I literally bring ear plugs to the movies now so during trailers for films I know I want to see put them in and I shut my eyes and completely avoid them. I saw Heart Eyes (fun time) last night and did this during the previews for Cap America and The Monkey. Sophie Turner is now the reigning Scream Queen over Anna-Taylor Joy and Jenna Ortega to me. Love your channel!

Why do the marketing teams NOT listen to the public about them giving away the movies! It’s SO frustrating !

My opinion on trailers is that only footage from the first act should be fair game. It might even help filmmakers rethink their storytelling because most first acts are mind-numbingly dull and unnecessary-you could start from the second and lose almost nothing.

Got spoilered by the trailer and I thought everything was way too simple and didn‘t have anything to say.
