When I hear adjectives I think of a describing word placed in front of a noun. This is what possessive adjectives do, they describe possession and they are placed in from of nouns.

They are adjectives because the must agree in gender and number with the object that is owned. In Spanish, there are also possessive pronouns: mío, mía tuyo, tuya, suyo, suya, etc.
