Soft Peep: Unthreatening, wholesome, cute, family friendly Hard Peep: Harmful, malignant, satanic, can cause brain damage if looked at for too long

I'm so glad you reviewed Possessor! I watched it a couple weeks ago and loved it. I didn't even know there was an uncut version, but that was the one I watched apparently. I agree that the Blue Light scene was integral. It was like the pivotal thematic scene of the film. Amazing Job Jess

It's funny that Possessor: Uncut was the ONLY version that saw a limited theatrical release this year, yet the R-rated cut is the one that is widely available for home media distribution. I bought the R-rated cut on Blu-ray by mistake assuming that it was Uncut, because that's what I saw in theaters a few months ago. Now I come to find out that the ONLY way for me to own the Uncut version is to pay extra for the 4K just to have the Blu-ray that comes with it. This is all ass backwards.
@TheCarltonator4 жыл бұрын
I believe Best Buy’s website now has the Uncut version in the regular blu ray form (no 4K).
@filmpositive66014 жыл бұрын
Thank you. After commenting, I did some searching and found that more retailers will be carrying Blu-ray-only options for the Uncut version starting next week. It seems the release dates for the R-rated and Uncut versions were split, with the R-rated being more readily available first. This is really annoying for someone like me who collects physical media and does not care to upgrade to 4K in the foreseeable future.

Thankyou! One of my favorite films of the last few years & by far one of the best Sci-fi-Horror movies ever. So tightly written and executed perfectly with an intimate but hard boiled tone. Emotionally devastating climax but absolutely perfect symbolism to our times of technological manipulation and political divide. Once in awhile a filmmaker creates something that connects with you on so many crucial levels and in subtlely nuanced ways that you reach a satisfaction and fulfillment with the experience that is unfortunately all too rare... as if they made the film just for me and what I needed at the time.

Thanks for the breakdown, I was lucky enough to see the uncut version in theaters and glad I didn't stumble across the censored version first. I wish more people were talking about this movie!

I saw a Fantastic Fest-hosted screening for the Uncut version, and walked out near the 3rd act. I didn’t hate the movie, it is really good. It was because my anxiety was at a high and I didn’t want to have an attack in the theater. I still love horror films though, and considder Hereditary and The Lighthouse as a couple of the best.

Love your video, love the way you express yourself and love your funny descriptions of the scenes. Oh and love your criticism of the MPAA. Immediate sub.

I find it interesting that This Film Is Not Yet Rated came out 16 years ago now and since then, the MPAA has become so lenient on the level of violence and whatnot that constitutes a PG-13 from an R... But the downright silly standards between R and NC-17 still exist all the same. Almost two years too late to the party, but great video! Definitely subbing!

Excellent review. With regard to the classification rating/s, here in Australia the uncut, original version was slapped with an R18+. Restricted to adults 18 years and older. With the reason for such being, "high impact violence, sex scenes and nudity". An adult rating with adult descriptions for such, for adults. The MPAA should have been scrapped many, many years ago and a new, and less-complex system introduced in its place.

You are spot on. Cronenberg the Younger picks up where Cronenberg Sr. left off. Being younger, he’s just louder (visually). The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Recently Started watching The Peripheral with my girlfriend and wanted to get back into Cyberpunk style movies, see what gems I've missed over the past few years. I was so happy to see that Cronenbergs son Brandon had made a few films and seemd to be taking on his Dad's mantle. For his second outing, this is up there with some of Dad's Best. I love a dose of body horror and challenging violence to go with my conceptual Sci-fi and this didn't dissapoint. As I watched the Uncut version I came here to see what the difference was as my girlfriend is pretty squemish with depictions of violence. Thought they might tone that down a bit, especially the ending so I might find a more palatable version for her to watch. The hard Peep, soft Peep bit had me laughing because honestly that's like the least offensive explicit immagery to the eyes in this movie. As this is another one of those movies that doesn't stylize it's violence to cartoonish lengths (ala Quentin Tarantino) I figured one of it's goals was to challenge our desensitisation to violence consumed as a third party to the act. It's just rediculously ironic that the censors didn't seem to pick up on this. I will need to watch that documentary now to make sense of film censorship now.

I just watched the film on Hulu and I'm pretty sure they are streaming the uncut version. I saw the two dicks mentioned and the eyeball removal. The listing for the film on the site says R though, but the intro warning says NR. So confusing. Either way I really enjoyed the film and this video.

I liked possessor. I still don’t understand why taz killed Eddie. Colin comes back into control and has flashes of eddies death which makes me think it was indeed taz who killed him. Why??? Eddie was a company man! What am I missing?
@keeran6973 жыл бұрын
Her love of killing keeps growing / becoming less inhibited throughout the film, and I guess Eddie was just frustrating to her? That, or she did it in the midst of the confusion of the Taz/Colin mind fight

Possessor uncut is so much better than the other versions, makes half the unique, 'artistic'/aesthetic sequences disappear. My dumbass bought the not-uncut version on amazon on accident, and had to keep apologizing to the people I made watch it with me a couple times cuz they were the parts that really distinguished itself (teeth/eye ball part specifically, the google viewing scene, etc).

Potential spoilers: I don't mind violence, and I think that a film getting nc17 rating because of its amount is straight up dumb, it's fake no matter how realistic it looks, and we all know that, some movie has more realistic violence but ironically it's way less graphic than what most movie have so that's an impossible standard to set. Butwhen it comes to nudity it's a much greyer area, not everyone and especially in the general audience feels comfortable watching explicit nudity in films when it's 9 times of 10 unnecessary(in this film it is in one scene. But yeah the mpaa is just stupid, Spielberg gets to keep a literal river of blood in a pg13 movie but any indie film with anything more than a blood splatter gets an instant R. Ps. Possessor is sick!

I thought it was a bit too dry and impersonal. Also, nothing new or truly original happened. I think he was trying to make the gore more powerful by boring us to death leading in. I'm not impressed yet. The children of real artists have big shoes to fill, and Brandon has a very large shadow to step out from under.

If anything, they need to ABOLISH the NC-17 and MPAA altogether. Damaging creativity and telling cinemas and advertisers that if your film isn’t given below an R, it’ll be ignored. That’s not cool! Let the public decide what’s appropriate and what isn’t. There’s no sense of consistency for what’s available.

Aren't you confounding violence and gore? Like Daddy in History of Violence, Baby Cronenberg shows violence in its painful, definitive consequences. Asian horror mostly shows cruelty or gross out torture. Some of it is pretty good and you squirm, but it's not as brutal and immersive as the violence in Possessor.
