Hey Chloe and Otto! I’m an Orthoptist (a strabismus and paediatric vision specialist) in England. There are Orthoptists in Australia too, they’ll look after you so well🥰 The glasses and patching will have been done during Otto’s visual development, which the critical period is until the age of seven. So after that, glasses and patching won’t change the vision, as Otto’s vision will have reached the base line now, and probably equalled out since you were discharged. Well done for that Otto! Patching doesn’t align the eyes better, it just purely helps vision to become equal in each eye, and is more commonly needed in people with strabismus (misaligned eyes) as one eye focusses more than the other. The strabismus wouldn’t have disappeared, or resolved, the vision difference in the two eyes most likely just became equal and he may have controlled his eye a little better. He most likely doesn’t need the prescription to be able to see properly, I gather this as he was told not to wear them anymore after visual development. It may be helpful to get a glasses test at the hospital to see if he has any hypermetropic (+) prescription to give, which could help him to control his eye a little bit better. Just looking at Otto, I don’t think they would do surgery, unless he lost control of his eye a little bit more and he got symptoms of double vision, headaches etc. But don’t worry Otto, surgery isn’t scary, it’s all done in a day. I’ve had strabismus surgery 3 times, and I was so intrigued I became an Orthoptist so I could help people like me. You are so brave and a wonderful boy, and I bet you will be fabulous whatever happens. You may even be given some eye exercises to help with the control of your eyes. Make sure to look into the far distance after every 20 minutes of close up work to help your eye muscles, as when we look at things up close our eyes naturally turn in. I hope you didn’t mind the long comment Chloe, I just thought I would give you a little more insight into Orthoptics whilst you’re waiting🧡 As you said, it’s nothing to worry about. The main thing is that Otto is happy and his vision is good. Sending lots of love!Xx

I have a lazy eye as well, my left eye wonders when I am tired, and when this happens, I see double vision. I am 71 and have had this condition since childhood. I was given eye strengthening exercises to do, surgery was never an option for me back then. As I have gotten older, I am able now to control this problem. Good luck to you Otto, I wish you well with your eyes..

I truly enjoy watching all your videos. It’s so wonderful to see you encouraging each child. The children pick up on this as you see the siblings encouraging each other. It warms my heart. Sylvia does really well drawing. I like how she repeats what you say to her. I looked up strabismus as I exactly sure what it is. It’s not lazy eye but it’s crossed or wandering eye. The condition has to do with the eye muscle. I enjoy looking up medical conditions as I have many autoimmune diseases and other medical conditions.

My daughter had this as well and we went the route of vision therapy. That might be an option for you as well. It did include patching, push-ups, and other exercises using her eyes. I would recommend looking into this and finding out what your options are as it saved her from any type of surgery and she only had to do it for a year and a half before the eye was corrected. She is fine now and it only crossed when she’s really tired or has been reading a lot but at age 22 she’s okay with that and knows what to do to strengthen her eye muscles because that’s what’s wrong with Otto’s eye. The eye muscle is weak and he just needs to strengthen it.

My daughter has had three surgeries for strabismus. The best thing we did was to be consistent with patching. As an adult she still has excellent vision in both eyes. I highly recommend some patching of his strong eye each day. If it is only for 3-4 hours a day it can only help.

I don’t know what I had but my eyes had some problems. I had my head tilted. They thought it was a neck problem, but it was my eyes causing problems. Something with the muscles. I was really young maybe a little older than the twins. When I was 3 I got my first surgery and second at 6 or so. I didn’t like that a second one was needed. Got checkups until I was 12. Last time wasn’t my regular doctor so idk if she would have made me return or if I was done? I can focus my eyes but feel like my problem eye sometimes still has a little moment? I see it in photographs. But it is very small? (Am 35 now to give you a timeframe idea). The cakes the twins made was so cute. The park looked like great fun too ✨

I have strabismus and doctor noticed it at my 1-year-old medical check, then I wear patching and glasses until the age of seven, when I got a surgery and doctor let me be one whole week at bed watching TV, I remember watching SpongeBob and Lazy Town a lot, so it had equally its good and not as good parts. After that, I needed another surgery one year later but since then, my eyes are not lazy anymore and merely no one notice it!! So I suggest you family and specially Otto to be brave and you'll see properly! Yeah, it's different bc he's older than I was, but maybe it can be increased with the time, idk. Take care of it!!

I have a turn in my eye and I wear glasses and I was offered surgery for it and they said I’d still need to wear glasses so I didn’t bother having it done xxx

Do whatever you can! I knew a girl who had this and I am not kidding people would look behind them because her eye tracked so far over you had to be sure what she was looking at. We were older too, like 14!

Hi my daughter has a lazy eye and there’s nothing wrong with her sight and would only be for cosmetic purpose to have surgery. We opted out of surgery as it’s just not necessary. X

Hopefully Otto won't need surgery. I have had a strabismus my whole life and it shows mostly when I'm tired. My eye doc says that my brain ignores the information from that eye most of the time - if I shut the other eye, the strabismus eye corrects itself temporarily. It doesn't afrect my vision otherwise. Just looks odd to people when they notice it.

I remember the older kids use to have their bellybuttons out. You were saying maybe when they grow up you might want to do something about them. I was just wondering has any of them said anything about their bellybuttons now that they have grown up. And do the twins have that same issue or not.
