I thought this was a very interesting scenario, if the Oster Conspiracy had gone ahead with the war for Czechoslovakia, and the overthrow of the entire Nazi regime and the restoration of the monarchy in Germany. The new government could effectively make peace with Great Britain and France, abandoning for the moment any idea of expansion across Europe and focusing only on rebuilding the country and its new position in Europe. Germany could reach some compromise with Poland regarding Danzig and its former territories in the East, form an alliance in Central and Eastern Europe against the Soviet Union. Effectively, Germany could create its Mitteleuropa and a slightly better position with the rest of the continent.
@johnpotts8308Ай бұрын
It's pretty much a return to their aims in World War I (although with Austria now part of the 4th(?) Reich). I do think it would be hard to come to any sort of compromise with Poland though - the Polish corridor cut East Prussia off from the rest of the country, so the new regime would see it as a part of the German heartland they would want to recover.
@chevaliermacabre2150Ай бұрын
Hitler attempted to compromise with Poland about Danzig and the Polish corridor and the Poles were adamant about not returning German land. I doubt it would be any more effective with a Monarchy that is much less intimidating than Nazi Germany.
@WilhelmEley-s3yАй бұрын
I disagree. The issue was not the morality of the German government. The geopolitical interest of the british and americans was to prevent Germany to emerge as a great power in Europe. The idiotic thing about it was though, that it was essentially a balance of power failure in the way they did it, by fully comitting to the Soviet Union instead of power balancing the two, they created the entire cold war mess. The soviet union was destined to be the greater power of the two, it had the demographics, the natural resources and the fast industrialisation under stalin. Germany with its lack of population and natural resources could so easily have been a client state to the western great powers, if they had just sided with it against the Soviets, essentially they could have made Germany their Ukraine at the time. A nation that depends on their support to fight the Russians, but without the resources to project power beyond this single issue, depending on their support, and saving the western allies the blood of their own soldiers in conflicts. And draining the soviets of their resourcers so the soviets can't expand in other parts of the world, unlike in our current history.
@nexdemise4182Ай бұрын
@@johnpotts8308 One thing that a lot of people fail to realize is that access to the sea was basically seen as the cornerstone of Polish independence to the point that Teutonic War (Teutons cutting off Poland-Lithuania from the sea, Battle of Grunwald, Polish-Lithuanian victory) is still an important topic taught in schools as is the golden age when Poland-Lithuania stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea (from sea to sea). Now, I don't think that Poland would hand-off the corridor for free or for something like Slovakia (like in one of the alternate paths in HOI4) or some kind of military alliance because loss of access to the sea would be seen as being vassalized by Germany, nor would it agree to some kind of joint administration for the same reasons. Poland at the time wasn't much liked by its neighbors (Germany seen as prior oppressors, Soviets also seen as prior oppressors and sour relations following Polish-Soviet war and in fact seen as the greatest threat at the time, Lithuania with complete lack of diplomatic relations following Polish annexation of Vilnius) the only real remaining trade route would have to go through Romania (good relations), Latvia (not sure about relations, but the connection went through the North-East panhandle which was the middle of nowhere flanked by two unfriendly nations), or following the First Vienna Award - Hungary (good relations). What I think Poland could've agreed to would be handing off the corridor for some joint annexation of Lithuania and possibly even Latvia and likely some other things. Like Germany takes Memel, Poland takes everything else, Poland hands off the corridor, Poland gets full access through the Vistula and likely some kind of extra-territorial shipyard in Danzig region, and some kind of Anti-Soviet defense pact between the two nations. There'd still likely be some tensions about a solution like this due to the fact that the other rivers (Neman, Daugava) don't flow through the Polish midland and most smaller major rivers (Bug, Narew) drain into the Vistula. Now, I don't think a plan like this could happen under Hitler and RIbbentrop due to Hitler hating Poland and being dead set on his idea of Lebensraum and RIbbentrop being very anti-Polish and pro-Soviet. But should a coup fail but succeed in killing Hitler it could feasibly happen under Goering, Doenitz, or even Himmler. Should it succeed fully it could happen under the Kaiser or whatever military junta leader. Especially if it'd erupt into a full blown civil war since Germany would need time to regroup regardless. That being said, WW2 would still likely happen under this scenario from all the tensions (conflicting claims and borders that were drawn leaving sizable minorities in other nations) Whether UK/France would guarantee Lithuania/Latvia or Soviet Union would see Poland moving into what Soviets see as rightfully Soviet lands followed by France and UK choosing to join in to pressure Germany from the west, or Poland stepping in after Soviets would demand Bessarabia from their Romanian ally. Like something would set off this powder keg.

I am sorry but this scenario seems poorly researched concerning the Oster conspiracy, their plans, who was involved and how much support was behind it. The Oster conspiracy had a lot of support from the German general staff at the time of the Sudenten crisis. Even amongst the common soldiers, they were not enthusastic about a war with the West. There was very little support for war in Germany overall which is why the Oster conspiracy is considered the greatest missed chance by historians on the subject. If Hitler had declared war, his popularity would tank and the conspirators would be seen as heroes who prevented a madman from leading Germany to ruin. The guards protecting Hitler would have been no match against the army sent to arrest him. The claim that there would be no clear leader amongst the conspirators is also suspect. The obvious leader would have been Carl Goerdeler, who was in contact with the British and a leading figure against Hitler. He had experience as a politician, was well versed in economic policy and a staunch religious and conservative man. There is also a possibilty that Wilhelm II would return. It depends on how much power Goerdeler is given. The army wanted Wilhelm II but Goerdeler and others would consider him too controversial in the eyes of England and France.

@sirsteam6455Ай бұрын
Do you have any sources? because saying something is poorly researched and providing nothing is basically just doing what he is doing but disagreeing with him, that and this is an interest topic to look into. Anyways I personally doubt the possibility of Wilhelm II return and how much the army wanted him back. Some key officers sure. But the general army? or the public at large? No. Do not forget it was the Navy that rebelled in 1918, or the fact that his very own Generals seized power and made him into a ceremonial figure, that and a civil war was raged which forced him to abdicate. Now given the Monarchists were one of the largest factions in Germany but given the geopolitical, social, and economic aspects of the return of the Kaiser, it would be a risky venture, compared to Wilhelm III
@sirnilsolav6646Ай бұрын
@@sirsteam6455 Sure, The Plots Against Hitler, Nein! and Appeasing Hitler all delve into this topic. Your argument about Wilhelm II is something I agree with, but we simply don't know. Having Wilhelm II return would be very controversial internationally, but he had a lot of support by the military command, and seeing as those were the ones who would make up the elites countering Hitler and responsible for ruling, they'd have a lot of power. It might be that he'd return under conditions of constitutionalism, so his power would be more limited. A way of saying "He won't be able to start a new war on his own" as the allies blamed his decisions alone for the war. But you're correct that a lot of his internationally negative perception might be considered too much. He was by far hated more than Hitler was at that point.
@joshuawindsor-knox3626Ай бұрын
I disagree Japan would still do anything like the Strike South if there was no war in Europe, contrary to popular belief war with the USA was pretty controversial within the Japanese high command and even it's supporters saw it as a massive gamble. Tojo was by war the biggest pro war voice but with the western powers undistracted I can't see there being enough support in the Japanese military to go through with it. More likely they try to reach out to Germany or Italy for mediation potentially drawing in the USA or UK as well. I suspect the peace wouldn't be that harsh and seeing as Japan still controls many of the richest parts of China they'd likely be able to get token concessions in exchange for their withdraw. Most likely a tabling of the Manchuria issue and demilitarization of China's northern border, and a restoration of the concessions in Shandong Japan took over from Germany post WW1. I think the military regime likely falls to internal pressure at this point and something like the Taisho democracy is restored but still with heavy military influence, as the USSR becomes a bigger threat in the West's view Japan likely becomes a tentative ally and since Japan still has Korea, Taiwan and one of the worlds strongest navies, Japan while not a superpower would remain a weak great power on the world's stage.

I think you kinda in the last part underestimate the Poles, 1945 is 6 additional years of preparation for Poland. In our timeline, by 1939 Polish economic growth was starting to explode with Poland every year modernising more and more and a very quickly growing population, not unlike the soviet union. You need to remember that Polish population was close to that of continental France. These 6 years, where Germany is licking wounds from the war with Czechoslovakia, slowing down remilitarisation, fighting internal conflicts and attempting to normalise relations, are years in which the Poles can use to great benefit, with each year being worth more to Poland than the Germans. Not to mention that the Czechoslovaks might be quite keen on helping out due to the last war and probably quite strong anti-German sentiment and fears. Poland did quite badly in our timeline, but in this timeline you have a weaker Germany against a Stronger Poland. The odds might be much more in favour of Poland. Especially if in Germany more radical movements can grow and prove a destabilising factor. I think the odds are that the war ends in a brutal slog/stalemate, which ends with Western Powers broking a peace.

As a German obviously I prefere more power for Germany, but a "quadpolar" nuclear game of chicken sounds like a VERY unstable world to live in. Though the Soviets relied on Germans to e.g. develop their nuclear enrichment (Gernot Zippe developing the Zippe type centrifuge for the soviets after they captured him, Manfred von Ardenne was involved with their nuclear program as well etc.). So in an alternative scenario, one might have seen a nuclear stalemate between Germany on the one side and USA on the other side, and possibly the soviet union as a nuclear battlefield and later wasteland between the two without risking all out escalation by striking eachothers homelands.

In year 1685 when Frederick's grandson Charles 2nd died without sons, his brother-in-law (brother of his wife) Christian 5th Danish and Norwegian king became king of Danubian kingdom (Habsburg monarchy). In reality in year 1740 Frederick 2nd (Prussian king) attacked Silesia because of destability of Habsburg monarchy and because of someone's non-recognition of Maria Theresa as queen, but in this alternative history it didn't happened, because Oldenburg monarchy (Habsburg monarchy and Denmark-Norway) was stable, everyone recognize Christian 6th as king and Oldenburg monarchy was more times bigger than Prussia. In year 1814 after the unsucceful Norwegian war of indepence the Oldenburg monarchy became federation of three states - Norway, Denmark and Danubia. After 50 years in year 1867 the federak state Danubia splits into 2 federal states - Bohemia and Hungary. In this alternative history duke Franz Ferdinand wasn't assassinated, but successor to the throne and first born son of Christian 10th - Frederick instead. The great war was going on just like in Reality. If the great war win Triple Alliance, then Knut Christian (second born son of Christian 10th) ruled the Denmark-Norway and the part of Oldenburg monarchy in Central Europe (Federal states Bohemia and Hungary) was split like in reality, but Silesia and North and South Lusatia were part of Czechoslovakia. I think, that the continuation of German expansion during allied interest in Sino-Japanese war would probably come in 1943, maybe later, but Germans would surely experience stronger resistance from Poles and Czechoslovaks. There was one guy talking about Polish modernization until 1942, then i'll talk about Czechoslovak modernization. It was also expected to be finished in 1942, just like large part of their border fortifications (if you want exact equipment numbers, i can put them here). I expect, that most of heavy forts are already built, waiting to be equipped. Now you may be asking yourself, "Why wouldn't they stop in 1938, when war with Germany was already finished and the fortififications just outlived their purpose? Well, in the video, it was said, that the new government led by Goering would still be anti-slavic and loss of war with them would only fuel their anger against them. With German invasion of Poland, the fortification line would definitely be expanded to also be on border with Poland, where the situation would be simmilar to their border with Austria in 1938, except this time, they the lightly protected part of border is mountainous. If they'd also have a border with USSR, i expect that they'd sign a formal alliance of defensive pact, since the relations between were good (at least in the pre-war years). I also think, that the Czechoslovaks could try to expand into Tseschen parts, the Poles seized in 1919 and into Orava and Spis, mostly inhabited by ethnic Slovaks.

In this timeline, I believe the Germans would be victorious against the Soviets. I believe the Germans would support an independent Ukraine and Belarus, and not consider slavs as undesirables. With the relative unpopularity of Stalin, I believe the Soviets would eventually collapse.
@gareginnzhdehhimselfАй бұрын
They would probably follow the plans they had in WW1. Ukraine, Byelorussia, and probably the South Caucasian republics are restored but under extensive German influence. Their economies and resources would be exploited by German industrialists and to provide cheap goods for the German working class, keeping them happy. Russia would be subjected to Versailles like demilitarization and likely also heavily exploited by German industry as they reconstruct the nation
@matthiuskoenig3378Ай бұрын
I disagree, they wouldn't want to heavily punish Russia. They would want them to be a (ideally weaker) ally. That is what they wanted Orginally in ww1 before the Russians kept refusing them. And they can paint their victory over ussr as anti-leftist instead of anti-Russian. While they would likely cutt the ussr up as much as possible. They wouldn't want to make the Russians in particular punished, after all the ussr wasn't even led by a Russian. Ouside of the major ethnic minorities getting independance the most they would do to Russia is cut off the siberia and impose favourable ecconomic treaties.

Quite the opposite to be honest. If soviets indeed went on and had so much time till 1945 they would be in fact invincible. Keep in mind, this germany is weaker than nazi one, way less ambitious at it. No plan ost or lebensraum ideas. Why would they attack Russia in first place?
@Kaiserreich01Ай бұрын
I think that if the war between the soviets and the germans start before 1950, the allies would help the germans, not by joining the war themselves, but by supplying the germans with food, guns, resources and etc, and also give them diplomatic support, as the Soviets would be a bigger threat then the germans, the soviets would have an larger population and would be on the way to be fully industrialized.

One thing the video is missing is that if France defended Czechoslovakia then the Soviet Union was bound to defend France as stipulated in Article 2 of the Franco-Soviet Treaty of Mutual Assistance which would in turn trigger the Czechoslovak-Soviet Treaty of Alliance. Which would theoretically bring the Soviets into the war and although the pact did have many flaws such as Poland and Romania denying similar defence pacts and blocking Soviet Millitary access, however at least some Soviets troops and equipment could be shipped to France (similar to Spanish Volunteers) and the Soviet Airforce might be granted at least limited access to Polish or Romanian airspace to fly to Czechoslovak airbases. This also leads to an interesting video idea that I have listed bellow as well as an explanation of the pact, why it failed and how this affect future Soviet policy. Video Idea: What if the Franco-Soviet Treaty of Mutual Assistance was enforced in protection of Czechoslovakia. In OTL the British convinced the French to abandon the Czechs and hence the Czechoslovak-Soviet Treaty of Alliance could not be enforced as Soviets would only intervene if France declared war on Germany first, this was seen by the USSR as a betrayal and let to the abandonment of the Pro-Western Policy under Maxim Litvinov when he was replaced by Molotov.

Czechoslovakia decides to fight the germans in 1938 but gives up in 1940 when they try again. You could've dived into that a little bit. I also just don't see the west getting that directly involved in Japan to the point where they can't handle European affairs. Yes, I'm sure they'd give lots of guns to China, but if they saw Germany making moves, they would probably prioritize that. The west has proven in this timeline that if they stand up to Germany they can win. This would make them far more likely to do it again. Also, many of the eastern europeans wouldn't be nearly as intimidated by the Germans in this timeline, and I don't imagine them capitulating so easy. For example, Mr Horthy in Hungary kept very cordial relationships with the west, even during world war 2 to the best of his ability. He would not be the first to commit to the German alliance. Who then? The Yugoslavs? It just got sloppy at the end. The Bulgarians certainly would not, even in our timeline, they were committed to only providing "occupation forces" for a time. There is no timeline where the British don't try to defend the greeks. Honesltly. Even in our timeline, Hitler was very concered about the Polish Romanian alliance. I think the willpower of this states to stick up to Germany would certainly increase in this timeline.

I could honestly see Germany moving towards a constitutional republic or closing off and focusing on autarky like spain did. If anything a nationalist monarchist germany would be interested in reclaiming german speaking lands and populations. Tensions would exist but since Germany and Italy were never really friends due to conflicting interests I don't see Monarchist Germany aligning with Italy as much. It'd be interesting to see a German Czech partnership too where Germany reorganizes it's eastern allies and potentially goes to war with poland to build a bulwark against communism. It really depends on if the person in charge has any kind of political savvyness. It should be clear to Germany that conflict in the west is undesirable so seeking improved relations with britain and/ or france should also be considered. Good video! Love theorizing!

While I appreciate the effort it took to make a video on this highly interesting alt-history scenario, I strongly disagree with much of the analysis. 1) the Oster Conspiracy had very high level support, not only in the army (ex. Witzleben), but in various ministries (Weizsäcker), the intelligence service (Canaris) and the national bank (Schacht). They would almost certainly have had the institutional clout to stage a full coup. 2) This is not the Germany of 1939, 40 or 41. The Regime and its various structures are much weaker, the nation as a whole not yet fully "gleichgeschaltet". The number of fully indoctrinated fanatics was not yet that high, and most families were still traumatized by WW1. There was widespread skepticism about picking a fight with the allies over something as trivial as the Sudentenland. If the Regime did start a war with the Czechs, a historically very close people to the Germans, thereby causing another Weltkrieg, there is good reason to believe that no amount of propaganda would have secured popular support for the conflict. A regime change "for peace" would have been welcomed by a plurality, or even a majority. 3) the Blomberg-Fritsch Affair earlier that year had greatly angered a large number of Wehrmacht officers who, faced with being sent off into an unwinnable war, would have jumped at any excuse to legimitately refuse their suicidal orders. Again, there is good reason to believe the vast majority of the Wehrmacht would have sided with - or at least not opposed - the coup. This is also why Churchill was desperately trying to get Chamberlain to call Hitler's bluff, as he had a much clearer understanding of the mood and politics within the Wehrmacht of 1938. 4) Supporting the conspirtators by standing firmly with Czechoslovakia would have been the absolutely correct move for Britain's grand strategy, as it's main issue was being challenged in three theatres simultaneously by three powers (Germany in the North and West, Italy in the Mediterranean and East Africa and Japan in Asia). If they could reset relations with Germany to neutral and work out a new modus vivendi in the aftermath of a Wehrmacht coup, they could remove the by far greatest of the three threats, thus massively improving their geostrategic position - at almost no cost in blood and treasure. Tl,dr: the Oster Conspiracy had a very reasonable chance of success, both for assassination and beyond, and it would have been much better for everyone if France and Britain had stood by the Czechs in 1938, even based solely on information available to them at the time.

I think a video on what if the 1525 peasant revolts succeeded could be interesting, the revolt was caused by many peasants interpreting Luther’s call for new religious interpretations as a call for new political relations between the peasants nobles and church. The result of this divergence would be a big south German Protestant republic from ~1530 onwards. Maybe the divergence would be Luther siding with the peasants and not choosing to follow a solely religious reformation.

22:30 Idon't think that Poland would be defeated easily beacouse Poles would (propably) have better equipment(even in 1939 Poland had really good tanks and plans for even better tanks and planes) and Poles don't surrender easily(like the battle of Wizna in 1939 or the post office in Danzig or Hel and Westerplatte and many other places) and Poland would be better prepared. Germany would need time to fix everything that Hitler done while Poles were only getting stronger and stronger.

Honestly leaving the Danzig corridor is a good idea to not upset the poles. Mostly Poles lived in the corridor and gives Poland access to sea. They would've been Germany's greatest allies against Soviets. Germany has always been way more successful than Russia so it's no brainer that Germans after all would have more influence on the Polish than the Russians. Germany's greed towards Polish land destroyed itself.

@jaredrevis4594Ай бұрын
Methinks your idea about Japan flies in the face of the diplomatic history. Not only was the tripartite pact a major factor in the allies playing diplomatic hardball (and it naturally no lomger occurs) but the major event leading to sanctions was the Japanese move into Southern Indochina. Hell, they were only confident about the strike south due to their position in Indochina and the fact they got a non-aggression pact with the Soviets. All of this has changed here, and yet Japan's decisions and the diplomatic atmosphere that led to them are unchanged
@matthiuskoenig3378Ай бұрын
17:38 my prediction is they don't start any wars within the lifetime of their initial leader. They will just never be confident enough for it, and would likely be willing to wait for opertunties. Their less extreme policies and their stance against Russia I think give them a good chance for good relations with Poland and a limited territorial exchange being in the table, or atleast Danzig. You probably end up with a situation more like pre-ww1 where alliance blocks form but no one is confident enough to start something without a good justification to their own people. I think the starter would be decades later in the envitable collapse of the Czechislovakian state on its own and resulting dominoes.

Missing from this scenario is the likelihood of France getting embroiled in a Spanish-style civil war by the early 40's. With nothing to fear on its western front, would the Germans have been emboldened to make a first strike on the Soviets? But without the spoils of the conquests of Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands, would Germany have been rich enough to create an army capable of such an endeavour, especially if the Soviets had those extra years to rearm?
