What makes me even more saddened for Guts as a character is that he has truly gone through so much that honestly wpuld break most people. In reality, the man was violated twice. He first was violated/raped by Donovan, who was given permission by Gambino to do so after he paid him. So Guts already has been betrayed in the worst way possible and it still haunts him to this day in his adult years. He then was violated by Griffith, The Godhand and the demons of the Eclipse. Griffith gave away his life as a means of sacrifice and got Guts branded against his will, where he firever will have demons hunting him until he is dead (only Schierke was able to give him a massive reprieve with the cloaking spell she put on the brand of sacrifice so he can actuay rest and not be hunted down so feverishly.) The demons also viloated gim physically by literally maiming him. They took his eye, caused him to lose his right arm and forced him to watch as Casca got raped right in front of him by Griffith. Mind you, this is when Guts is a mountain of a man, countless years of training, prodigy level skill and talent and incredible victories and he was still made to feel small, useless and powerless to another. The fact Guts hasn't gone completely insane and tried to commit suicide after all that is a testament to his indomitable will and spirit.

To be fair if you read The Blackswordsman Arc and The Lost Children Arc after Golden age, you can definitely see that Guts after 2 years of fighting, hacking, and slashing apostles has taken its toll on him mentally. He’s really in the deep end, and it would take awhile for him to let people in again.

Read the very beginning of the Black Swordsman Arc all the way through until the beginning of the Golden Age Arc: Then, watch all 13 episodes of the Memorial Edition with the English dubbing. I personally think it meshes nicely for a change.
