Post Hole Digger Fail and Hanging "American Beauty" Barn Quilt

First I try to drill post hole for pasture fencing. I don't have much luck in this hard dry soil. So I decided to hang the barn quilt that my wife, Rebekah just purchased. She purchased it from silverdale barn quilts. It really catches your eye and makes the barn good look.

This time of year the top layer is like concrete. I agree with Dustyone pour a bucket of water in the hole and let it sit. Usually does the trick. You can also break that top layer with post hole diggers.

Looks good - A little bit of advice from the old man. When you climb a ladder - up or down - keep tour hands on the side rails. Don't move your hands up or down to each rail. Just hold onto the sides and slide your hands up and down. This way your hands never leave the ladder. It takes a little practice but it is worth it. After you get it perfected you will be passing it onto others when you see them on a ladder.

The barn quilts are in a registry of some kind with a tour to see them in a special driving yourself type thing. It is found on some tour sites. You would have to give permission for yours to be on it. Many people just like them on their barns but do not want strangers driving on their property to see them. I love your barn quilt block. Looks good! It is perfect!!

Start all the holes you need and drag a hose out to fill them with water. Do it a few days , then have back at it with the auger. I did it for wood posts for gates for my garden. Had to as all my stuff was DIY and hated asking for help. There is always a way around everything if you think about it long enough!

I know you can't get enough height to do this at ground level, but one thing my dad used to do once the auger was in the ground a little and he hit a hard spot, he'd raise it up and try to drop it as fast as he could to get it to try to bite into the dirt. Maybe your hydraulics aren't fast enough. The bucket of water is a great idea too.

I admire the fact that you continue to try to fix equipment that might be past it's prime. I'm an old fella that loves old barnes , the petina, the smell. Tell your wife the sign on the barn is special. Take care and enjoy that vacation. I've spent many not vacationing as a lot of people know it.

Some of those augar bits have replaceable teeth on the cutting edges often bolted on. Failing that water the hole and wait for it to soak in and dig again. To get to your desired depth can be a process of rinse and repeat! It is obviously more efficient to start several holes at the same time so you water and move to them all in turn.

Love those old tractors. I'm sure there's some innovative way you'll come up with to adapt the implements to use them on the Case, or the AC. You are pretty creative and getting better with your welding with every project. Love the 'barn quilt". Makes it look like a real farm........LOL

I welded a pipe along the spine and sticks but 6 feet off the back end that way you can hang on it or put some weight on it to add down pressure

The barn quilt looks good on the barn and if you drill the holes as deep as you can where you want the post holes, the pour a gallon of water in each hole several times during the day and soften up the ground, so you can finish digging the holes. We just went through Hurricane Sally and we got more than enough rain for a while. We have red clay about 8 to 10 inches under the top soil and it is hard to dig a hole and that is what I did to get the holes dug for a fence.

JudithB Looks great, now need one for the other end! LOL You could put in a steel post at the corners and run a line to set steel posts on the rest of fencing while water sits in the holes. Always seems to be a long list of pruning, cleaning and burning to do in the fall. Theres always trimming up the trees in the pig pen and dig out the metal the hogs found. Finally cool enough here to push mow, so working on the yard around the barn today. It will take most of the week to push mow 4 acres at my age, one section at a time! and make apple pie filling like you did!!! YUM!!!

Check to see if the augur dull. A little sharpening might be needed.

Some of the older post hole diggers had removable blades on either side of the point that can be sharpened. I used a digger like that 40+ years ago that had those blades and we sharpened them about every year. we had 5+ miles of fence that needed rebuilt every so often or just plain replaced. Good luck.

That Case, from the front, looks like a robot critter of some kind out of "Star Wars" ... "May the tractor be with you!" :-) When I was going to Florida State, I lived outside Tallahassee in a trailer park. My brother loaned me an old Willys Jeep van that was once used to deliver food out to airliners. It had a distributor that was set on an angle on the engine and loved to collect moisture in the cap. I use to have to run a hair dryer out to it to dry it out, to get the old rust bucket to crank. Often made me late for my most favorite class: ACCOUNTING! Ugh. The JEEP definitely was not with me ...

Evan, in today's vid, Tractor Mike noted that if the tip of an auger is dull, it won't dig. How sharp is the tip on your auger? An auger ought to dig thru most anything but rock if sharp. Try a new tip.

When storing digger , use chain to swing it from a large enough tree limb or cross beam. Makes it easy for one person to swing it around and hook to tractor!

There is a hole in t the gearbox on the auger to insert a rod or pipe to put down pressure manually.

It's always dry here in NW TX... Warning: Not OSHA approved! We had to hang a 100 pound kid on each side of the horizontal bar halfway down the digger to get enough weight on our old post hole digger. On occasion we were desperate enough to haul water to the site. Usually once you break through the hard pan the digger bites in & works good.

Looks like your cutting edge on your auger is wore. When you showed the bottom of the hole the vertical to horizontal plane was rounded. Need new cutting teeth. The teeth usually protrude slightly further out than the auger itself thus breaking the soil. Hope that helps.

The barn quilt looks great. Using stainless steel screws to prevent rust running down the quilt was a wise idea. The post hole sides kind of look like ceramic. Did you try a bucket of water in the hole to soften the clay? Your farm looks great. Hard work pays off.

Show us the auger cutting points they may be dull or broken, good sharpe points will make a difference, pour water in the hole will soften it in a while, Down pressure is a big help Stay safe,

Put that auger back on and drill those holes as far as you can and then fill them w water. They should soak in in a day or two and then you can drill deeper. Good luck.

I don't know if it will help you, but I just had to dig a whole bunch of holes for fruit trees in dry, heavy clay soil. I added water to each of holes. I dug as far as I could, filled with water and came back the next day dug further and then added more water. Continued that every day til I got to where I needed the holes to be.

Evan, that auger works like a wood bit. I think that if you will look at it you will find that it is dull. Also make sure that you have clearance on the back side, looks like it is rubbing there. Like your videos. A fellow stuck in Illinoisan.

Try pouring some water in the hole , let it soak and then try to drill the hole, the water usually makes the soil softer, try a few times adding water as you go.

I always leave my drills with the forward reverse selector in-between. That way it works as a trigger lock because I love to hold my drill with my finger on the trigger.

Try soaking the ground where you're going to dig the post holes. The water should help loosen the clay soil a bit.

Sometimes you have to stand on one of the lift arms or weld a bracket on the pipe to hang a couple of tractor weights on.

We used to be able to buy double pins for three point hitches here in the UK 🇬🇧, don't you have them? If not put one single inside the hitch, that should get you to use that tractor with your hole augur. Hope that info helps.

Quilting is my favorite hobby. I would suggest looking at some antique quilts, picking out a block you like, then taping it off on the side of your barn and paint the pattern directly on the barn. The pattern y'all chose would look great if it were about 4 times the size of the one you hung. Also would cost much less.

Had the same issue with post holes being hard as steel when we put in our pasture... Had to drop a bucket of water in each started pocket and let em soak for 20 minutes... I found it was the top 18" to 24" that was the hardest... @ 5:48 I know that frustrated look! Oh how I know! @9:13... My wife owns a quilt shop... She Loved your Barn Star... Around our neck of the woods, You have to be a quilter to represent the barn star... Rebekahs going to have to take up quilting ;)

I will echo the comment about drilling as far as you can and then pouring water in the hole, letting it sit, to loosen things up. Gets a little messy, but usually works. A steel bar (in my case, an old axle) works well with this to break it up. I have also seen people add a bar to the post hole digger, essentially a handle, to give them leverage for some down pressure. That may be useful for you. Makes it a two-person operation, to be sure, but still easier than a manual post hole digger like I use. Ideally, I wait for spring to put in posts/fencing, because fall can be harder. I keep thinking baout getting a an auger for my 8n and probably will if I see a deal. But same issue with lack of down pressure. If it screws around a root, the 8n lacks the umph to get it out, and frankly, digging the holes manually is not that terrible. Especially when I make my college age kid do it. Lol. Enjoy the week off!
