only 2nd class, for first class you needed multiple deeds each worth a cross 2nd class ! P.e.like several successfull rec patrols or that. unlike to usa medals, german medals are more for reaching certain numbers, except knights cross for infantry,that officers got only for actions out of own clacualtion that lead to some important consequence. For non officers the german cross was introduced.
