Post-Storm Garden Tour - It's HOT and Ugly! || Black Gumbo

Come see how the garden is faring these days, there is heat (mid 90's) and extreme humidity and its not treating my tomatoes well. We've had extreme rain and storm events in the past two weeks, making for some damaged plants, and we have pest pressure as usual. Gardening can be clean and pretty but in hot regions like zone 9b on the Texas coast, summer gardens usually look stressed. #singleseedchallenge2024

I'm sorry about the damage you received from the storm. Hopefully, you're able to stake up some of the plants, and they will recover. I have a ton of those pesky fornicating leaf-footed bugs in my garden as well.😂 I've tried everything and nothing will kill them. I've started squishing them, but I think that is not killing the eggs, so I'm going to get me a small cordless vacuum. Too many now to try and catch. This is the first year my tomatoes and cukes have taken off, so I don't want to lose to some stinking bugs. 😊 Happy gardening!!

Thank you for that walk through tour. I follow along with some of the well known KZbin gardening channels and I noted that the ones that show all the how to info but rarely show the failure side are the ones who seem to be pushing products. Don't get me wrong I appreciate anyone who has a link to the same products they use or comment on in their description...makes it easier to get the same products shown. I just like it more when a gardener shows that even when you do everything right...by the numbers so to speak, things can still go wrong. Thanks again and happy Gardening my friend.

Great minds. Just did 2 videos about the garden after the storm last time - a tornado actually touched down in our area. And then I got caught IN the storm while recording! Things are a mess but we can start over. Good luck

Hi Scott, Manvel here, it's been awhile, how are you? I finally have a little success this year with containers of bush and cherry tomatoes as well as some ever-bearing strawberries. It's about over for the tomatoes what with this intense heat. Those leaf footed bugs have been such a nuisance!

I completely understand the garden uglies. In Central Arkansas Zone 8a, we've had tons of rain at a time, several times, and some abnormally hot and humid days. My garden reflects the extremes. I should get a good harvest, but some of the plants are sad looking. I tend my garden regularly, but sometimes the damage gets ahead of me. I harvested garlic today and planted a pumpkin patch. Hope for a better garden day. Happy gardening. Peace.

Sad to see your garden suffered through the storms. Hope every one recovers. I'm in 6b tornado alley Missouri and my plants look like they went through a washing machine. But I think they will still produce. They just look wonkey and have a few branches missing. 🥴

I enjoyed this video. It is real life gardening. This is my 3rd or 4th year to garden, mostly in containers, and it is looking good right now. But I spend hours babying it. I like your attitude. Enjoy the successes but accept the drawbacks. Sometimes I wish for rain, any rain, here in southern New Mexico. Upper 90’s already, single digit humidity, can be brutal. But I have learned to appreciate it. Few pests or disease. Lots of shade cloth. It’s just the garden I love.

I’m encouraged by your garden Mr Scott. I’m only just starting my garden this season, but it’s not going well and I’m a bit discouraged I have to say,but I know gardening here in Alberta can be up and down as well. It’s just nice to know that others are persisting, if ya know what I mean.🙂

Yep, that's gardening. Some years are fabulous, other years you question why you started it at all. I had a bumper tomato crop last year, and this year every squirrel in northwest Harris County has cleaned me out. Looks like it'll be a good potato year though. I'll find out as soon as the soil dries out a bit more. My corn has been laid flat so many times I've lost count, but it's back up again. I've noticed a lot of trees out here covered in tent caterpillars, some completely destroyed. They seem to come in cycles and I wonder if the extreme cold/ heat of the past couple years made the trees more susceptible to them. Oh well. It's too hot to worry about it. Maybe I'll take stock of it all sometime later. Like late October.

I've seen 'horror stories' about those storms and heat in Texas. Glad you're OK. I start to wilt when it's over 85 degrees, so feel for you with your temps there. Hopefully most of your garden survives. Take care of yourself first.

I’m glad you weathered our recent storm without too much damage. I’m pretty close to you in Liberty. I was hit by the flood earlier this month. My entire garden was under almost 3 feet of water. I should be able to rebuild for a fall garden. Like you said, that’s gardening.

The humidity has been brutal this year and top that off with some heat and it's almost unbearable. I'm in Manvel TX. My tomato's aren't looking so good either. I did get plenty fruit though so far. I got mine out earlier than you did I believe. Those leadfooted bugs along with the tomato horn worms have been very bad this year so far.

I live in Liverpool, Texas, and I know what you mean about the bugs. I've been picking my tomatoes when they just start to blush because i don't want the bugs to eat them. I use Dr. Bonners peppermint soap on my garden for the club footed bugs. It does help but needs to be done every week until they're under control. I love watching your videos and I learn so much from you.

Your orchard always amazes me. I'm working on pear trees now. We bought a four variety tree and a single. Also have two trees grown from seed that we grafted branches onto from the other trees. One took 👍. Going to try again later a little lower than the rabbit damage😮 this time. Since we always have crab apple seedlings sprouting up all the time thought maybe in the future to buy a nice variety and then graft it sheet have two. Hope they turn out as nice as yours.😊

Hi. Glad you and the family are ok. Here in Corpus, we got some rain and wind at about 3am but not as strong as you got. My corn is still standing. I use spinosad for the worms. It seems to do better than just regular Bt. My tomatoes are about ready to call it quits as well. Have a great night and tomorrow.

I'm going to look back on your old videos for info on keeping citrus small. I'm finally working outside again and am starting with the pots of citrus: lemon, 2 oranges, a kumquat and then many figs, and blueberries, and 2 mango trees. They are in large pots but NEED to go into ground due to heat and moisture. I need to look back on your advice on planting and if I'm suppose to trim the roots back. This is going to to be a big overhaul and this is probably not the year for it due to storms, but I'm not getting younger and they need a better life. You do have bright spots in your garden and it's giving some harvest and some years that is all you'll get but as you said - that's why it is called growing and not shopping. Much rather grow than shop! I was wondering how you folks made out with the storm and so glad you posted.

Citrus can just be left to grow as it wants, just prune for size however you see fit. They tend to stay small themselves when in pots.

I had crazy time with the "tent caterpillars early on. Just soon as to BT wore off the horn worms moved in.not to mention its the worst year for vine borer my squash have ever seen!! 😅. Quite a bit more disease all around this season. it's been just as wet on the coast as the rest of Texas but we're still getting it while the gettings good. Thinking I might clean the soil with a good cover crop later in the summer.likely a sorghum or a sorghum sudan.

Scott, are you okay? You haven't posted since before the hurricane in July. Did you have major damage that prevents you from making videos? My biggest damage was sustained in the May derecho - my 60-year-old pine tree fell on my neighbor's roof and my fence fell over. The hurricane was awful too with the eyewall passing over us. The fence on the other side of my yard blew over in the hurricane. I have been wondering about your grape vines and the rest of your garden. Hope you came through okay. SCOTT -- QUESTION -- I have a 4-5 year old apricot tree. (The only one. When I purchased it I was informed we did not need a second for pollination) Last year was the first year for fruit. Got 3-4 fruits they fell off the tree. This year, we had a couple hundred fruits on the tree. I thinned them to one or so every 4-6 inches a month ago leaving I guess a hundred or so fruits. The past week or so. The tree is sheading fruits. I am concerned the drop is due to a lack of pollination. Any Thoughts? Thanks Ray
