Important points Post-truth: A philosophical trajectory Three Theories of Truth: Correspondence Theory: Matching proposition with the reality out there.(Aristotle and Plato) Coherence Theory:” Internal consistency with the broader system. Pragmatic Theory: Practical values and usefulness of things make something true. ( William James and John Dewey) 2) What is post-truth? Examples of Sophists ( Protagoras). Emotions and personal beliefs are preferred over facts and objective truth. selective facts to justify one's predetermined beliefs. Its aims can be domination, power. Pakistan's politics is a prime example. Kills the spirit of debate; facts are created. It promotes authoritarianism 3) Psychology behind masses mindset (I) self vs others: Opinion that contradicts our beliefs we block it i.e defensive mechanism (Freud). That's why counter-narratives are important. (II) Cognitive Dissonance by Leon Festinger : Conflict arises when a contradictory world view is faced by a person. Bottlenecks in way accepting new correct opinion: a) Confirmation bias b) Social/peer pressure c) backfire effect d) Dunning-Krugger effect 4) Impact on Democracy: age of enlightenment and importance of human reason Divine right to rule versus Social Contract Post-modernism's impacts on it: Postmodernism rejects objective reality and promotes subjectivity and perspectivism. Derida says everything is textual there is need to deconstruct, while Foucault says everything is ideological. 5) Post-truth and Social Media: a) Information was hierarchical in the past; not accessible to everyone; everyone was not able to generate it. Authority was a source of knowledge. Now the State's role is changed. Non-expert culture is promoted now. b) Likes and Subscribers: people spread popular and inauthentic information c) Raise questions about outlandish matters with no evidence d) Raise questions over validity of mainstream channels. e) In this scenario people will believe what they want to believe. f) Poll result: 61% of Americans get knowledge from digital media. g) Swarm: Without philosophical ideas to bring positive change in philosophical structure. 6) "How to Counter Post-Truth?" * Acknowledge that everyone has biases. * Recognize that post-truth appeals to emotions and prejudices. * Cultivate a critical attitude and skepticism towards information. * Don't rely solely on emotions when evaluating information, especially regarding politics. * Maintain a critical distance from information and ideologies. * Fact-check information before accepting it as true. * Be informed by reading from credible sources. * Develop a healthy skepticism towards information.
