POSTAL 1 Loading Screens Remade With AI

*CONTEXT* The images contained within and the resulting video were made as an experiment to test the bounds of Midjourney and it's AI image creation. I don't wish to claim the title of _"AI Artist."_ *The images are in no way meant to replace or supplement the original or Redux version. I don't want to give the impression the original or Redux versions are inferior to the AI created ones.* Giving Midjourney the original images as a base, as well as a selection of keywords to attempt to replicate it while still trying to convey the same tone. Some of the images took a handful of generations, some took close to a hundred. The original music plays with the appropriate level and then crossfades, along with the image, to the music from Redux version. This was not possible with _The Construction site, The Farm,_ and _The Industrial Complex_ as they were not remade. The music for the original version of _EZ Mart, Shantytown, Earthquake_ and _La Palamino Resort_ as well as _Tokyo_ and _Osaka_ are recycled from earlier levels as they added to the game later on _Special Delivery_ and _Super POSTAL_ respectively. --- You can download all the images in this video (including the originals and some unused remakes) at this link: www.mediafire.com/file/k6j5y1dhs1dswn8/Postal+Loading+Screens.rar/file Some of the colours and levels were changed in the editing software and may look different. It was a lot of combinations of prompts that worked with some and not others. _Hell, hellish, nightmarish, horror, dark, dark red, warped_ were pretty standard inclusions as well as a description of what was happening in the scene. It would often include faces were it was inappropriate and they had to be weighted out with the prompts _- faces_. Use Version 4 and Quality 2. Are you including a link to the original image? I found the easiest way was to just send the original png to Midjourney Bot on discord and then click _open original_ so it would display in the browser and then copy the URL from that into the generation.

While I think these are neat in concept, they lack in execution due to the losing losing a huge part of the subtly and muddiness of the original screens. You could never be fully certain what it actually was you were looking at half of the time, and as such created an added level of creepiness to the loading screens. But with the A.I remakes, they make it too clean. You can tell pretty much exactly what it is you're looking at half the time, and it takes away a lot of that creepy mystery. Still quite cool tho lol

Some of those are real good but the others loose the charm a bit. It sorta simplifies the stuff that looked uncanny, it made you question wether or not there's actually supposed to be shown something gruesome or not(truckstop, outskirts), now its just a plain image with some gore or an obviously creepy thing on it. The more abstract stuff also kinda suffers but central park and the train station ones still look very fitting. The ai also seems to confuse cryptid looking figures for human ones and vice versa, which ruins the farm image but at the same time made an equally good(imo) picture as the original(but different) for the city. Weirdest thing for me is the elementary school, since the original looked ominous and foreshadowing but the one made by ai is very symbolic in terms of story and catches the atmosphere of the "final stop" amazingly. Best remake is totally tokyo and the best interpritation imo is earthquake.

It really is a mixed bag. It was interesting seeing what it did with the very abstract levels, like Earthquake, which ended up looking similar to the Redux version suprisingly. That is something I admire about the originals is the obscurity to it, not everything is completely clear and it leaves a lot up to the imagination. On the flip side, seeing the interpretation of the Elementary School and the farm and the monstrous elements added in was fun. The Farm is a weird case, in the original you can actually see creatures on the tent/wall. Shadowy figures, but they're definitely there, making the eldritch tone of the remake is _almost_ fitting.

@@ABuffWizard I always thought that the farm depicts the Dude looking into the train car full of ostriches, since the closest shadow left to the silhouette of a man looks like a bird. I feel like the ai nails the original obscurity pretty well with the mine. And makes the bridge look more obscure, since it made three rows of teeth instead of original two, almost making you question if those are actually teeth if you haven't seen the original. The junk yard alsl kinda holds up but I never saw anything in it, the ai version looks like a garage door though? Anyway, thank you for this great video. Really made me think about the aesthetics of postal 1 and how original it was and actually still is with its grim visual storytelling, emphasizing the foggy mind of the protagonist.

I did consider it, the rules of Midjourney prohibit the creation overtly violent images (as well as other NSFW things). Even certain phrases like “blood” are restricted. Considering some of images already generated, I didn’t wanna push my luck with a giant pile of dead bodies.

I have to say, it's pretty awesome and how close the AI program remade the original loading screens, still just as terrifying and unsettling (except Osaka, kinda lame the katana, crab and Japanese text got taken out, including La Palamino Resort, I found the dude cool investigating a clue and wondering what happened), it reminds me of my idea of an alternate universe where RWS has decided to stick to their horror roots, making it just as creepy and adding stuff such as the found footage camera aesthetic in Kane and Lynch 2 : Dog Days (where things such as headshots that aren't even that gory get censored, the audio spikes from the explosions and gun fire like with gas tanks or the QJY-88/PKM GPMG, the macro blocking artifacts corrupting the screen, the buffering screen showing previews of the level looking like some early KZbin video thumbnail, GSM interference, and so on)

Tho, seeing the transformation of the almost incomprehencible imagery from the og adds a special tone to it, since the ai has to innovate more on the "drawings" and demonstrate its capability to understand input images.
