Accented Cinema - Episode 41
Phew, this video took a while to make.
Movie posters are something we often use to decorate our wall. We KNOW they are beautiful, but we don't often pay attention to WHY they are beautiful. In this video, we'll learn how to appreciate poster designs, and explore the world of Asian movie posters.

Old boy, Death Note, Big Fish, Kenshin. A Tale of two Sisters is impressive too. I didn't notice before the positions of the characters and were only shocked by the blood. A Silent Voice poster has only attracted my attention because you've explained it. I usually thought it was just a messy poster making show little of an apparently uninteresting story.

Hard to choose from your video, but I was sold the moment I saw the poster and the trailer of Shadow (2018) I instantly looking for it. I haven't watched it though, I just hope it's as good as it looks from the poster and trailer, because it won't really matter if the movie itself is junk.

@@erichuang7524 Let me make a guess. China is more about tradition. Hence the use of caligraphy and metaphorical stuff( chinese love metaphor in their arts). For japanese, it's about creativity, to be open mind, thinking outside of the box, etc... That's why they tend to use landscape and crazy elements. It's to show something way bigger than a normal humans can perceived with their eyes, something that require imagination and creativity

@@bradley8614 So in the book, it specifies that it is a Death's Head moth, and a larva of one is found in one of the victims' mouths. It later turns out that the Buffalo Bill had been cultivating them. However, the movie poster exaggerates the moth's natural by superimposing over it several seemingly dead bodies. As far as the symbolic intent, I can only speculate. It is a murder mystery story, so the bodies may merely just represent death and the victims. The bodies also collectively make the shape of a face, just like the numerous people Buffalo Bill skins makes his skin suit.

I would argue that Hong Kong historically has produced pretty good poster art. It was a high turnaround industry, so they didn't always put that much effort (read money) into it. It was only when Hong Kong cinema exploded in the early 1990s that Hong Kong started to truly emulate Hollywood. And, of course, Photoshop and After Effects, made poster art fast and cheap. I'm always amused when Westerners watch an Asian movie and are surprised by the use of camera angles. It was the Asians (perhaps Japanese in particular) who introduced framing and the borders as a component in composition. Western art was center weighted. The important object in a painting was put in the center. You only have to do an image search for Japanese woodblock prints. Claude Monet collected Japanese prints. They were very popular in Europe in general and influenced the impressionists.

This is a beautifully crafted video essay bringing more attention to the poster designs in East Asia. My favorite part was seeing the Japanese movie posters and how distinctly Japanese they are with those manga style panels. The way their designers handle text is honestly phenomenal and I genuinely think that because manga is so interwoven into their society, the way they handle text takes on another dimension and they find creative yet beautiful ways to be cohesive with the visuals of the film (whether animated or not).

As a graphic designer by trade, I'd like to thank you for making this video. I don't get to see other countries' movie posters outside of the internet usually, so this was an interesting delve into how they're laid out. I truly don't think that people give them nearly enough credit for what they do, simply because they're an advertisement, but they're so important to making or breaking a movie. I've watched and refused to watch movies or even television shows based entirely on their print advertising (though sometimes I have come to regret my decision either way)!

They are so bland, boring, and lack creativity. But we'd see ones from east Asia that are so beautiful, creative & vibrance. They feel like I would displace on my wall in my apartment. I'm always happy to see Asian movie posters continuing to remind us that Posters are an art and they can be just wonderful & creative as the things they are advertising.

I'm glad you made this video. My favorite posters are from Yorgos Lanthimos's movies, like The Lobters, The Killing of Sacred Deer. It's so simple, so minimal but it tell you everything. My mind was blown!

Japanese movie posters often shows very mature skills of graphic design, especially on organization of the information. They have Chinese characters, Japanese Hiragana/Katakana and English all display on one poster, but you don't have trouble of locating the information you need. Korean movie poster dare to use so many dark tones which you basically never see them in Japanese movie posters....Chinese poster really seek for the artistic conception(意境) but sometimes forget about the importance of the information you deliver. Anyway, always enjoy your video essay.

I love movie posters. There are so many old school movie posters that I wish I could get my hands on. For now, if I can collect any new ones I adore I try to. Great video, lots of food for thought in here.

Outstanding video! With regards to the Shoplifters poster, the only parallel I could draw from it was that in the image the family are all crammed together leaving as little space between them as possible. This of course is just like the movies premise where they are all forced to live in a condensed manor in their claustrophobic make shift home.

That Chinese re-release of Totoro, though! The girls wading through a field of tall grass, and then your eye travels up to their destination and you see... different colored patches of grass? Then you realize they're the marks on Totoro's chest! That was a delightful experience to me.

I agree with the jealousy of how Japanese posters manage to make a wall of text look really good. While I am not a graphic designer, I like making custom wallpapers and let me tell you, its freaking difficult to learn that ability to make a wall of text look good. I love wall of texts but I dont want it to look cluttered. Japanese posters nail it and to this day I still reference it.

One additional point about pretty text layout in japanese posters. Chinese book covers also have some of the best text layouts. The fact that chinese and japanese use a written language of similar style (only a couple character long, character can be written horizontally vertically or even semi-random and still very readable) is really the one reason why they can heavily stylize the typography.

That Wandering Earth poster really wants to make me watch that movie. If I saw it out on the street, I'd just stand there and think "what a sick piece!" Total eye catcher and definitely more than it needs to be.
