I agree it is a little to far gone. I would take it to Bourne's powder coaters Digbeth, Birmingham or at least have it blasted back to bare metal for respray. Appreciate there is a cost but a steel frame deserves it and will last another 30 years. Good experiment though 👍

One thing's for sure, man. You'll never get it nicked.

I'm not familiar with that brand of frame,,,,maybe you could include some back stories on some of the models for a fan in the U.S.A.

Saracen was a British brand. I think the frames are now made in the Far East. The Conquest was one of the early mountain bikes. Two brothers/cousins, called Nick and Richard Crane rode Saracen Conquests up Mt Kilimanjaro. A shame this frame is in such a state because the Conquest has a proud heritage.

I do like a bit of patina, but I also think this one is too far gone. And, as it is a 531 frame, it's worth having it blasted and painted up and ridden. It looks about Adam's size, too - pity the postage to NZ would be a killer - it would be interesting to see what he does with it! I'm sure there will be a better candidate for this treatment soon, however, and I look forward to seeing that too. :)

The Saracen Conquest was the bike of choice for Nick and Richard Crane when they rode up Mt Kilimanjaro. They might have changed the gear ratios.

Afraid that frame is too far gone. Its a shame, but no sense wasting good parts on something that looks like thst. It was s great idea, but...full resto needed. The rat rod idea is fantastic...just keep your eye out for a better candidate! Enjoyed the content anyway!

Frame it trashed. That rust is deep into the steel.

Great video! Have ever tried Owatrol? It sets to a kind of clear-coat like finish and is supposed to prevent any further rusting. You can use it on bare metal or rust (or mix it with paint weirdly).

That would remove all the original paint though - and that wasn't the objective here

Lol! Spray a bunch of shit in there! 😂💩 I like to do a preservation rather than restoration but there is a point you have to say stop! By the time you've put the patina right you might as well give it a custom paint job.

wow I wish I had known that about the BLO! I literally painted it on with a paintbrush and it took days to dry! I did like 3 coats in some places 5 on a sandblasted stumpjumper

What is that rust treatment called that you brushed on? I have surface rust on a diamondback frame that has a black and blue swirl paint scheme so I’m looking for rust treatment that will turn black and blend well with the paint job. I plan to clear coat or plain wax afterward.

may be a lot of work for a little difference/ in a case like this try use what I call the "one treatment only strategy" which in this case could be just the good old oily-rag-treatment :-) / worth a try on a similar patient

Good try. That 531 frame, imho, should be blasted back to metal and powder coated.

I rather quite like the look of that but agree, such a classic frame deserves better :-)

Take it down to raw metal and polish it up then clear coat...or you could use gun blue then clear coat

Good effort, and good bit of experimenting. Got an old Raleigh Twenty that might just get a similar patina revival, when I eventually get round to it :)

I was looking to do something similar with an old Falcon 1980s frame. I was going to give it a light clear-cout instead of linseed. Would that be sufficient?
