Hi everyone! If you are new here my name is Romi and I am a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelors in Nursing (BSN). I work on an OB/GYN floor that specializes in high risk antepartum, postpartum, women’s oncology/gynecology, and pre- and post-op. I am also cross trained to float to Labor and Delivery to help momma’s deliver their bundles of joy!

Going into labor at 24 weeks with a history of pulmonary embolism and previous high risk pregnancy, i felt so comfortable being at the hospital during pre and post partum, the nurses and drs were so kind, gentle, thoughtful. So very understanding, they were amazing! I hadn’t shaved in weeks, hadn’t showered in days, was leaking fluid for 4 days and i was practically nude and had my private parts looked at to insure no infection and i never felt discouraged or disrespected. I said in the beginning “do whatever you need to do to keep me alive/healthy” they were so kind ! So thank you for what you do ! I wasn’t a patient of yours lol but thank you for the care you provide the patients !!! Means so much

My sister recently gave birth and she wanted to bottle feed and the hospital made her breast feed and that made her feel worse because the baby wasn’t latching well until this one nice nurse helped out a lot and gave her some donated breast milk! Thank you for what u do💜

The hospital can’t MAKE you breastfeed. They can encourage it . Your sister probably was encouraged by a nurse who was too pushy and she felt like she couldn’t say no that’s not what I want for my baby. The hospital can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do. Even life saving treatment.

I'm interested in being a postpartum nurse. I've thought about going for labor and delivery nurse and also a nicu nurse, but I feel like a postpartum nurse would be less stressful. Any nurses or anyone with knowledge, please correct me if I'm wrong

all units no matter where you work can be very stressful! it just depends on what level of stress you are comfortable with. For example, in ER there are emergencies left and right and nurses running codes. Some people love that level of stress and thrive in that environment. In postpartum, things can go wrong where moms can hemorrhage or bleed alot, or something goes wrong with the baby (less likely than something happening to mom but still happens). Wherever you go you will be trained to handle situations like this. For the most part, postpartum is a wonderful experience and you mostly take care of healthy moms and babies. While you rotate through nursing clinicals including labor and delivery, NICU, and postpartum, you get to see some of everything and that will help you in your decision.

I am 36 and I feel old to go back to school. My youngest is 2 and he is my busiest baby. I can't remember anything. I have delivered four boys and I know how important nurses are. I am in awe that you have only 2 to 3 couplets. We usually start with 4-5 high risk couplets (that’s 8-10 moms and babies), discharge a few, and admit several more per RN. We handle chorioamnionitis, hemorrhages, preeclamptic moms, respiratory distress, jaundice, infants with renal & cardiac issues requiring VCUGs or echocardiograms, etc. That’s our regular floor, not NICU. I usually walk (run) 10 miles a day, and I’m in my 50’s.

omg! I wouldn't know what to do with 4-5 couplets, especially those with multiple issues like you handle. How do you like it? Do you find yourself burned out/stressed or do you enjoy it? We definitely don't care for babies in respiratory distress, they go to NICU for any kind of distress. Our floor is normally for the the high risk moms including maggers, step down ICU from DIC, hemorrhages requiring transfusion, basically anything abnormal from a normal delivery and any high risk babies go to nursery where they will do minor renal/cardiac issues, jaundice, iv abx, etc. Are you just a normal postpartum floor? I'm so curious because I would be so stressed handling all those patients.

Same here. 4-5 couplets, most of the moms and babies are high risk, late term premies, IUGR, glucuse protocol, mom and baby on IV antibiotics due to chorioamnionitis, renal and cardiac issues requiring VCUG‘s, ultrasound, and echocardiograms.

My nurse didn’t want to give me baby milk until my family came in the next day so for a full night my baby was crying. (My baby didn’t want to latch on she didn’t want it) even after the nurse helped me latch her on nothing. Also the incubator wasn’t charged/working. Don’t get Kaiser.

I love this! I’m becoming a freshmen in high school and I really want to become a LD nurse and I’m so passionate about it but, I can’t do vomit. Do you have any tips to help get a stronger stomach?

Lots of nurses I know can’t do vomit either and have to leave the room to get some nausea medicine, but don’t let that hold you back! It’s just one small thing to being a nurse. I can tolerate it no problem and stand there comforting the patient while they do it, but the other nurses say it’s mind over matter. Control your gag reflex before it triggers such as counting your fingers or reading something on the whiteboard, it’ll help your mind focus. If you simply cannot tolerate it, leave the room and tell the pt you’re going to get them medicine. By the time you get back, they should be done and everything will be in a nice little remiss bag thrown away and you can give them the medicine without having to deal with any of it!!

Hi Romi! I loved this video I am currently a TELE nurse but have floated to postpartum multiple times and find that I truly love that floor. I feel our joy and happiness being postpartum and on TELE not so much.. I’m hesitant about switching floors because I’m a new grad and feel as though I’m learning a lot on tele I’m just not happy tho.. any advice or suggestions? I loved women's health when I did clinicals in nursing school and couldn't imagine myself anywhere else!!! my advice is if you feel joy and happiness when you are on postpartum then switch!! I think you will find joy and be happy because you already feel that way when you are on that floor!! I'll never get tired of taking care of mommas and babies so try it out :) the beauty of nursing is you can always switch out of specialties anytime!

I don’t know why this was recommended to me. But it made me relive my stay in the hospital when I had my daughter. I love my nurses. Just didn’t like the lady who gave my daughter her last blood test before we went home, from her heel. She did it twice! And my daughter bleed so much that she soaked the bandaid and it was still bleeding after 5 hours. I had to put a big bandaid and was too afraid to take it off after a few days. Now she has a scar and she’s two! I can still see it 🙄

4 weeks away from baby #4, just put goody bags to say thanks to the nurses. Having a planned c section, how many nurses would I have for my stay ( estimate). I never counted with my past c sections. You seem so sweet, loved seeing this makes me excited. Also, if someone asks you for diapers or extra pacifiers do you give it? Are there rules about this, we literally started all over again

Hi there congratulations momma!! You are so sweet to make goody bags for your nurses, I bet you're their favorite patient!😍 Yes you can have as many diapers as you need, typically we only give one pacifier but if it drops on the floor or something we give another one. Just depends on how strict the hospital is. Don't be afraid to ask for more of what you need!! And if they say no, wait a little bit and then say yours dropped on the floor lol in case your hospital is a little more strict with their rules ☺️

nooo working nights for 4 years I have my sleep schedule pretty much down, however some nights can be jacked up occasionally haha. three 12 hr shifts are soooo much better for me than 5 days 8 hr days a week. But everyone is different and some people prefer it!! And coffee/tea gets me through the night lol 😂

I just came across this video and love it. Was L&D your first RN job ? How was your orientation and overall experience ? I just recently quit my ED orientation. I have always loved babies and helping women so I’ve had an interest in L&D and NICU. I may start to apply again to L&D. I feel like ED was super fast faced and I wasn’t passionate about it. Maybe with L&D it will work out ! I love this introduction to it all!

Antepartum/OBGYN was my first RN job! Then I cross trained to L&D after a year or two and thats how I continue to work there as they're always short staffed and I float or pick up. You definitely get the best of both worlds of helping women and babies in L&D. I hope you get the job, I'm rooting for you!! 💕

@yolie zackschewski I work L&D and it's very much like an ER, laboring and OR/PACU environment but with pregnant moms and babies. It's super fast pace and things can go scary in some deliveries. Always have to be ready for an emergency. If you like that adrenaline you'll like L&D. I've done it for a year and I know I won't be doing it longterm. Unfortunately very exhausting and stressful for my type of personality. But I also think it depends what hospital you work in and nicu level of care. People are getting sicker during pregnancy and it sometimes feels like an ICU. But I do love helping these pts during their laboring process it very rewarding. Unfortunately, the shortage of nursing staff I think is making this unit harder because we are given more patients than Normally recommended and can sometimes feel unsafe. Do your hospitals take 2 year or 4 year degree nurses. My area now only accepts 4 year bsn for hospital work on any unit and require the 2 year nurses already there to go back to finish school if they want to stay in their jobs.

some hospitals are doing this, but not all of them. A lot of BSN "preferred" and not required, but my tip is to apply to them anyways if you are an ADN. It doesn't hurt and some hospitals may still hire you and pay for you to a BSN while you're working 😊

Do all hospitals have donor breast milk? When I was at the hospital my milk wasn’t able to come in and my baby lost a lot of weight so they got concerned and said they should feed him a bit of formula. I was really set on breastfeeding so I got upset but I wanted him to be okay so I said it was fine. Did I have to specifically ask for donor breast milk or does not every hospital have it?

hi there, not every hospital has donor breast milk as some do not have milk banks nearby or they just use it for premature babies only. If they have it available for all babies for supplementation purposes the hospital should ask you before you deliver if it is something you are interested in. I'm sorry about your experience, I hope breastfeeding is going well! If you decide on another baby, you can around at different hospitals in your area if they have it if that is something you are interested in 😊

In nursing school, this floor was a turn off for me only because of the double charting (mom and baby). Does it seem a lot for you? Or is it not that bad? Other than that I loved it.

its honestly not bad at all. Once you get the hang of it and where to click etc, it takes me about 10-15 minutes total for all of my patients to finish charting. Then just chart different details throughout the night such as intake/output, feeding times, etc.
