In early May of 1945, a small group of American soldiers under the command of Captain Lee teamed up with a group of German soldiers to defend Castle Itter in Austria from SS fanatics who were attempting to execute a group of French prisoners who were in the castle. While the SS troops were driven off, the battle did result in the death of a German officer named Gangl, who was shot by an SS sniper that was trying to kill former French prime minister Paul Reynold.

WWOOF is not simply an organisation that allows you to travel in exchange for volunteer work. It is specifically to volunteer by working on organic farms. Some are just private gardens or farms, some are things like community allotments, and some are commercial farms. I don't think it's a bad thing to do (there are some really nice projects), but describing it like it generally organises some kind of charity volunteering is misleading.

Civilisations exist because of people's obsession with alcohols. Buildings had to be built to store the grains and everything used to make beer. I read about it in Mark Forsyth's 'A Short History of Drunkenness', if you want to learn more about the subject.
