Yeah. Some parts of the manga were done before the rules of the actual game were finished, so some of the duels were changed to better fit the real game. The problem with that is that sometimes the characters would end up with the wrong number of cards in their hand than they needed have for a scene in the manga, so Pot of Greed was made up as a way to fix the number of cards in their hand.

Fills like 10 seconds of screen time and allows writers to set up hands that would otherwise be logistically impossible. They started to rely on it to the point where some GX decks became unviable after they banned pot of greed in tournaments. The first example here is the easiest to explain, the character’s monster gets stronger the more cards that are in his hand, so pot of greed ups the stakes. Just having more cards is inherently quite a big advantage in yugioh more generally.

Think of it this way, two Duelists fighting in a Duel, must keep track of everything going on in it. The number of cards in each deck, the knowledge of their own cards and what is currently out on the field, and the math skills to calculate the ATK, DEF, Life Points and amount of cards you have. Of course, the maximum cards you can have in a Deck is from 40 to 60, so you might not tell how much cards your opponent's Deck has, unless you have good perception. So, explaining what Pot of Greed does every time you play it at least lets your opponent know how much cards you have left in your Deck. It is a pain, but that's just how it is.
