I keep mine in resealable bags with oxygen absorber in another sealed container. Works great. Also works for white rice, white flour, corn meal (jars with silicon rubber seals). 10 years storage is easily achievable with that. Store upright, because even if the lids etc. are breached the nitrogen is heavier than air in the container from an oxygen absorber.

Popular backpacking meal: make up a large serving of mashed potatoes with some added spices (garlic and onion) and any combination of dried vegetables (peas and carrots are great). Add a protein (TVP, cheese, tuna, canned chicken, sausage, etc.), cover with gravy or an instant soup. Really quite delicious and simple to prepare. The flavor is best when made with hot water, but in a pinch you can also cold soak the potato flakes.

We are reworking our food storage since I had to go gluten free about a year and a half ago. Potato flakes in meatballs? This I will have to try!
@The-Grateful-Hippie4 жыл бұрын
@@TheProvidentPrepper unfortunately for me even a small amount of gluten clauses me serious distress and I have to use separate cookware because the rest of my family is not. They tend to eat gluten lite because we usually are having the same thing. Lucky for me I have found a gluten free bread recipe that I can make by hand with a Danish dough whisk. No mixer required. I looks like we will be storing plain ingredients instead of prepared mixes as a lot of premade dried mixes have wheat flour or barley for texture. Should storing gluten free grain flours like brown rice flour and sorghum be any different than storing wheat flour? How long will sealed olive oil keep if kept cool and dark?

@@TheProvidentPrepper Thanks for the info! Don't be sorry we all have to do what we have to do to be healthy and feeling well - which is super important in a stressful SHTF situation! My beautiful bride and I were continuing our discussion today on what we could store that the entire family will embrace. We saw the title of this video and knew we had to skip ahead on our "binge-watching" of The Provident Prepper and watch this one for more ideas. Potatoes are super expensive here in the Philippines. Most supermarkets wrap a few pieces in plastic, weight them, price them and WOW do they cost in comparison to other vegetables. A westerner will surely say " Toto, we am not in Kansas anymore " when they view the prices Camote (sweet potatoes) on the other hand may be had for much less, perhaps because they grow well in hot conditions? If you venture into wet markets or night markets where the trucks come in from the growing regions up north (Baguio for example) you can at least choose your own individual roots or purchase a full sack if you wish. This will save you some coin$$$ Sometimes, if there is a flood during rainy season, you may be out of luck for a few weeks if the trucks can not get past the low areas. The single and only solution we have found is KNORR brand potatoe flakes (same company that offers dry soup mixes, flavorings and bullion cubes) in the commercial size box. These are intended for restaurant use and man are they stingy with the mashed potatoes! The serving size here looks like they used a melon-baller to scoop up the product. I have asked for extra as a side dish several places and was refused even though we offered to pay for the additional product. ONE scoop only per order is the rule. Not so with anything else on the menu! OK, sticker shock time: a 2 KILO ( 4.4 pound) box (the product is in a nice mylar bag inside the box) is now pricing in at P630 pesos in the commercial section of our local super market. That is $12.16 USD at today's exchange rates. To keep things in perspective, the provincial minimum wage in our area is P500/day or approximately $9.66 USD at current exchange rates. I guess it should not be a surprise the local restaurants are stingy with the serving size if they even offer mashed potatoes. The yield is 15 KILOS ( 33 pounds). We use chicken stock or one chicken bullion cube/two cups of water and a slice of butter to one dry cup of flakes. Stir in some heavy cream or even a heavy mix of dried milk reconstituted with water to finish. That makes a wonderful, rich tasting mashed potato that the whole family truly enjoys. Pre-measured dry ingredients are included in our kids school emergency bags as well as our automobile kit. Now, we will enjoy some great reading courtesy of The Provident Prepper!

Did you forget salmon patties?? Canned salmon (or tuna...haven't tried canned poultry but I s'pose it would work), add one egg and potato flakes. Mix it until gloppy (a little drier than meatloaf gloppiness), fry thin patties in a little oil until brown and crunchy. Heavenly. Tartar sauce optional, but chopped dill pickle is a must.

You are very thorough, you explain it in an easy and relaxed way and even the "veteran" preppers learn something new with every video. I feel right at home here with you two. I'm currently on a nice spree of videos on your channel to soak up as much information as I can. Problem with living in the Netherlands, Europe, is that we don't have mylar bags for sale here (we can import about 10 bags for 80 bucks from Germany) nor are there any companies like Auguson Farms who sells food like this. There are about three webshops I know of that sell mountain house against ridiculously inflated prices (60 bucks for a can of spaghetti is not unordinary).I'll try to make my own potato flakes and I'll be sure to use some of your suggestions from your video! With love, Mike

@@TheProvidentPrepper Hi! I have a question. Pure potato flakes are difficult to find, but I found instant potatoes with these ingredients: "Idaho Potato Flakes (dry), Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate. Freshness Preserved with Sodium Bisulfite and BHA." Since there are no fats or oils, I'm thinking this would be suitable for long term storage via the mylar/O2/bucket method? Would you agree? Thank you so much for all of your videos! You have helped me so much in getting prepared.

Similar to your bread, you can use potato flakes to feed a sourdough starter. And from that starter, the sky is the limit.

They are also my secret ingredient for gluten free latkes and the best, knock your socks off knishes (not gf). Takes out most of the work but still a fantastic final product with just enough memories of bubbe's kitchen which can be a great comfort in a disaster.
@OhavYisrail5 жыл бұрын
Here's the recipe to feed (add yeast to start starter) 3/4 c sugar 3 tbsp potato flakes 1 cup warm water. The rest simply follows standard sourdough protocol (leave out 8-12 hours and harvest 1 c, return rest to refrigerator). In my experience this is a more active starter than flour base once it gets going. While it says every 3-5 days I was able to feed and harvest every two days with no noticeable decrease in productivity. It can then be used in any standard sourdough recipe. What's especially cool about it is it's naturally gf so you could make gf products such as biscuits or quickbreads if you have rice or almond flour stored.

I looked at the potato flakes from Church of Later Day Saints and it list monoglycerides as an ingredient. Is that a fat? The one I have is by Shiloh Frams and I’m not sure if it’s good for long term storage or not..ingredients are Organic Potatoes (mono- & diglycerides from sustainable palm oil)
@trade07142 жыл бұрын
A question .... The term "just potato flakes" is confusing to me. Does that mean (as your video shows) that flakes with monoglycerides (fats) are also considered as "just potato flakes"? This is about the same ingredient labeling as the boxed potatoes of different brands on the grocery store shelf. So as long as I properly store those potato flakes I'm good for 5-10-20 years? I'm planning to use a FoodSaver to vacuum seal them for maybe 5 years. Thanks.
