Thanks, Gene! I've been trying to decide between the 300D II or the 300X. I'm sold on the X. Side note: don't put the lid of one of those OXO containers in the dishwasher. They don't make it obvious, but it's not dishwasher-safe. I lost two of those lids to that; the pop mechanism stopped working and there was no way to fix it.

Just used one on a doc shoot. That variable CT was super useful in matching indoor ambient nasty fluorescents at 4000K. Enough power to balance and fill large bright windows @ 6000K daylight with a Lantern attached. Noticeable unexpected improvement in skin tones especially at tungsten settings compared to my Draycast LED panels-that are actually very good (97 CRI spec.) This is my favourite new light and now I want another.

Honestly, having some great lighting capability is fantastic, even if you only have a smartphone to film with. If you have a nice lighting kit, and you learn to use it just with just your phone, you'll have some of the skills needed to get good results with a better camera. But even then, smartphones can go pretty far with good lighting! There's a bit of a craze for trying to get the latest cameras with the best shooting specs, but honestly you can make a better, wider variety of short films with great lights and an entry level camera than you can with a premium camera and nothing else. If cool lights peak your interest, I say you're being totally reasonable.

I'm concerned about the 300Xs loss in output over the 300D. I wish I understood why it does that. Even with the 300D losing output when used with a gel, you still have the option of massive daylight output when needed. With this in mind, would you rather use the 300X with less power or just gel the 300D?

I’ve noticed that a lot of Canon, RED, and Arri Alexa footage looks soft. Do these cameras record in this way so that you can sharpen in post? If so, when sharpening, would you see just a black halo around details that makes it seem sharper or is there actual detail brought back when sharpening footage of these cameras? Genuinely curious since I’ve seen your videos on the EOS R and Arri Alexa.

too late now, but i would have loved to know what the t-stop or f/stop was at 6:12 on the 300X. Since 5 ft, iso100 1/50 resulted in f/4 on the Arri650, looks like if metered, that 300X would have been at f/8...giving me far more latitude in actual use (either further back, greater punch once modified, or simply flexibility w/ outside use.) Telling was that the Wescott, i assume also at 5ft, needed a bumped up ISO and f/2.8 to achieve almost the same punch as the Arri 650. Given this demonstration, despite the RGB, i'd have to skip it. That was an impressive presentation.

and what about batteries for the 300X (i need bi-color for architecture... ) ? from the aperture web site : Therefore, for best results, we recommend using batteries that are capable of continuously discharging 14-15 Amps, to provide adequate headroom for the power draw. so the D&O/Comer C90 A/S Supports up to a 10 Amp Continuous Draw... so not up to the task... any cheap and good recommendations ?

I think 300x totally means 300 'crossover'. Also, at 8:00 I was surprised how different the skin tones were on the 300x vs. the 120d II. The 120d II made Gene look slightly green.
