Fantastic video! If. May just highlight something you did and that I I noticed other experienced DP’s doing; you mentioned it in passing but it’s the most important step to amazing shots every time... The step of not accepting a room how it is on arrival. Rather than walking into a room and looking for the “light motivation”... they find their shots, shooting into the corner of rooms, into doorways/hallways or windows, placing items in the foreground, looking for depth and interest, often moving lamps etc. in the process. THEN following all of the excellent instructions you laid out here. You briefly mentioned that you moved the furniture around but the motivation for how and why you did so deserves it’s own video breakdown! I’ve asked DP’s I’ve worked with and they remark it’s largely intuition but it seems like a teachable skill.

Same. I definitely have to write that down somewhere for my own reminder. Brilliant. I shoot a lot of interviews that involve no wide shots and the background is out of focus. Our shoots are so time-limited I'm always fighting the clock and people saying, "So... Are you ready?" Like 8 minutes into setup, even though I'm also setting up camera and audio. But even on shoots like that this principle could add just that much more realism and sense of place, which is just good storytelling.

Hey mate, I’ve been looking for a tutorial on lighting coverage for ages! This is definitely one of the best videos I’ve seen on lighting for video! One question I’ve got is when you move the lights in tighter for the closeups, would you also reduce the light intensity to match the brightness of the wides, or would you just leave it as is? Thanks again mate!

Great one Danny! This has always been one of my struggles, getting my scenes to look natural in the environment - sure I can light my subject really moody or do some high key lighting, but it really breaks the video when it doesn't fit the overall environment. Love the demonstration and as always, keep up the good work bro ;) PS. Would be curious to see you break down different lighting techniques in a room with no natural sources of light (eg. window) and how you can change the mood completely with high key lighting, low key, etc!
