My man if you have a multiple followers mod you definitely should populate the stronghold with orc followers, maybe even hire the dawn guard armored trolls and set their home location as the stronghold to be guards

Orcs also have an ability called Beserker Rage which gives them double damage but you take double damage. Its pretty awesome too it covers you and your weapons in blood!

War axes are actually too small and light for chopping wood.

A Dane axe or other similar ones can work, but the head is not designed for cutting trees, or splitting logs. They are thinner, but they will still work. A hatchet vs a one handed war axe yeah, the war axe doesn't work well XD
