The first videos we got from our tuberous friend for Humankind and Millennium were all about what a breath of fresh air they were. Then we heard more negative things over time. His videos on Civ VII are the other way around. He came out hating fresh air, but is now begrudgingly admitting it isn't what he wanted, but is what he needed.
@axiomsofdominion-f3c2 сағат бұрын
I mean there's absolutely zero cost to Potato crapping on Millennia, or even Humankind. There's a huge cost to truly going ham on negativity for Civ 7 or refusing to play it due to both audience size and his place in the streamer/tuber ecosystem. That is independent of whether Civ 7 is amazing or not. It really could be Civ 7 is better than the other 2. But the underlying structural stuff still exists.
@MrBrock31452 минут бұрын
@@axiomsofdominion-f3c That's only a concern if you think he would lie to you if he didn't like it. Based on his negative review of the game, he ain't pretending to like it but he seriously hates the UI. Shills don't pretend to absolutely despise a game element in the game they recommend you buy. :) Shills sound like "There are a few things to work out but give it a go." Potato: "The UI is fucking horrible - I ranted at the game dev for 10 minutes about it in DMs. They made every fucking mistake possible." and "The gameplay is very fun and the narrative events which I normally hate are ok and I hate them for being ok." Potato embodies the Grinch when talking about the UI ("Hate, hate, hate, double hate, LOATHE ENTIRELY!") and like a reluctant fan when talking about narrative events. If he's a shill, he would deserve an Oscar for his performance.
@shyguysamurai3 сағат бұрын
We have the same conversation with every Civ release. The initial release always underwhelms, we rankle about the changes because change is scary, the devs iterate, we decide the changes are actually pretty fun, every new release improves the game and eventually we can’t see going back to older Civ games.
@axiomsofdominion-f3c2 сағат бұрын
Well you also have evaporative cooling. The critical people eventually move on. When you are really mad at a sequel or say a book adaptation or w/e you can sustain the energy for a few months, especially around the actual release, but in the end the haters leave. Eventually only the supporters stick around and that happens with literally every major media franchise ever. Additionally the casual audience just doesn't have strong opinions on games. They play whatever is new and popular and showing up with content creators. If Civ 8 was a legitimate 6/10 it is still unlikely that it would have less players than the previous game even if the previous game was a legitimate 8/10. This is just incredibly consistent among major gaming franchises that have limited high production value competition.

@@cuaroc3351 I think thats because the main issue Potato has with the game is something we, the average viewer can see. The UI is something visible and easily understood through video. I didn't like civ switching in Humankind, but there were a bunch of specific reasons why that don't necessarily apply to Civ VII. The switching mechanics here seems different enough that I want to approach it with no preconceptions and give it a chance to sell me on the idea. Because even though it's a little bit of a bummer that Rome will never colonize space in Civ VII, it's possible that the switching mechanic brings enough new positives to the table to balance that out.
