TLDR; Elbing is a high skill ceiling assassin specialist designed to remove CLs from the game, ruin CA's, and DPM BBs with the most accurate guns in the game using some of the best AP. BLUF; Pick your fights and force a crossfire between your DPM and your team's battleships Elbing, like every KMS ship, is a specialist. It's role is unpopular in that its a DD/CA hybrid. If you play it like a Hindenburg with 6.4km detect and 40kt top speed you'll find alot more enjoyable balance of gameplay. I personally run concealment over Fearless brawler (as smoke will negate the brawler's dpm increase regardless), but I also run the Unique Upgrade and Speed Boost Mod in slot 2 for 3+ mins of 45kts top speed on engine boost. The way I found Elbing to be the funniest ship in the game is to fly around the map, snag caps where you can but focus on being an assassin/force of nature out on a flank to force crossfire. Shred cruisers, and DPM down battleships. Aim for upper belts or bow/stern armor. As you found out in the video, super structure shots will net a lot of over pens. Elbing has DM pen angles so smack extremities until completely bow in, then hit the SS for continued full damage. As for DD fights, you'll have to play smart. Force them to angle with HE/AP mix-ups, knock out turret and torps. If they angle your AP will full pen, if they go stern in, fire AP along their rear super structure/turrets. You'll still get full pens for ~2-5k dmg and knock out turrets to make it massively in your favor. The worst scenario is that they stay broadside on but your HE DPM is still decent and the massive health pool/25mm plating still puts you on a decent advantage. I'm personally not a fan of the "find a spot, camp smoke and farm" gameplay as I have a dozen other ships for that playstyle. But Elbing provides the perfect cross between speed and devastating firepower that commands respect and can dominate any match if played smart Goodluck and Happy Hunting

You can't just provide an AP pen value without range. It's 190 mm at 12 km.

And 149mm at 16km. Most targets he was shooting at in this video were well within 16km. Yes pen values change depending on range. But he questioned why he isn't getting damage, and the answer is he's hitting the wrong spot. In my experience playing this, I feel like you aimed too much at superstructures instead of the hull. If you aim for hull and their decently close you can get consistent 5k+ salvos, since the pen is so good. Also against something like a venezia aiming for cit would have been perfect.

he just flat out plays ships so badly when he doesn't like them. he has a totally different play style than with ships he likes. this DD is an AP monster, but you still need to change to the HE at times and he never does. and he so focused on changing ammo types in the ships he does like, so why he does this is just weird.

4:55 This is the problem with the Elbing. I always kind of love/hate to see it on the enemy team. It's a good chance your team wins because the enemy team are down a DD (role-wise), but actually dealing with the elbing is always frustrating as well. So much health, the AP just does so much damage if it surprises you. So many times, team wins, Elbing player on the other side finally says "F it", jumps you, you die, he dies, your team wins.

The ships good, but it's not Perth. The 12km quick reload torps are almost the primary weapon. The crawling smoke is cool. Don't open water BBs if you can help it and bow into crusiers. It's not good at killing DDs due to very floaty shells. I'd describe it as closer to Pan Asian cruisers than British. Almost like a Colbert that swaps dpm and speed for torps and smoke. I like it, but it takes patience to play well and you need to be able to aim torps to get the most out of it.

I always get very high damage vollies with the Elbing. I actually find it hits dds consistently harder than my Italian SAP monster. And then if you get any broadside cruisers or BBS, its 4-5k damage every volly.

Yeah people don’t get how devastating elbing is against your average dd player. Most dd players will start kiting when engaging another dd, and kiting means they start to angle, and an elbing can consistently get 6-7k salvos on angled dds. Absolute monster

elbing is an absolute broadside assassin. I usually run with rudder 2 instead of conceal and take conceal in the commander skills. and you 1000% need extra heavy ap. Its best in a division with some stealthy little torpboat like a shima.

For the elbing i recommend the AP gun damage upgrade and gun focus build. Elbing is great at ambushing cruisers. And flanking.

With no intention to suggest I know better than you do, or that I'm in any way a better player, but after nearly 1,000 games in Elbing, I feel more comfortable with slightly different commander skills. Instead, I drop the 5 percent reload, add 10 percent concealment and + 7.5 percent extra heavy AP. I only mention it, suspect source that I am, because it's my most played ship, and my own results have eventually brought me here. Also... Nobody who has Hindenburg and/or Schlieffen would ever put Lutjens on their Elbing. Only unicums or community contributors with unlimited commander movement. Your extreme min-maxing is noted, as a window into the darkness that is your true soul. Anything for an edge.

Honestly wish this was a Tier 5 or 6 Light Cruiser instead of a Tier 10 destroyer. It doesn't even have the Recon Plane it was designed to carry historically. This ship is technically the Spaehkreuzer 1938/1939/1940. Basically a VERY light Cruiser meant to defend the fleet against destroyers and act as a recon vessel for fleet operations.

The party trick of this bote is its ability to claim cruiser cits consistently due to its smaller guns, supreme accuracy and low concealment so you can get real close to cruisers, they go broadside and you just cash in on the citadels with guns that don't overpen or miss. This is the appeal of a ship like this over ships like Minotaur or Des Moines

Range mod build is always super boring and has far less game impact. Like those braindead kiting, 20km range build Nevsky players that effectively take a radar away from their team, to farm their dmg.

OH! A proper build for the elbing! More range though is always better. Range buys you time to avoid, something thats hard to do in an elbing. Well, at least it was before the turbo boost buff which is crazy to me. So maybe not as needed as it once was. heavy AP, fire rate, range. This is your recipe. Smoke is a 0-sheet handle, nothing more. Sweet spot on most BBs is just above the belt. Best to aim here as the super structure quickly saturates. Better to leave it as a "miss" catcher.

The big thing I don't like about the Elbing is that, for whatever reason, the entire line up to it has a more-or less even distribution of the guns along the hull (even the Schultz which has the same 150mm dual-turrets), EXCEPT for it, which moves the majority of firepower to the aft of the ship. WHY!? They made it a giant DD that's supposed to push in and bully other DDs with its armor and larger HP pool, but configured it like a Nurnberg that's supposed to always run away and kite.. I'm not saying the Schultz is much better, mind you, since the 2nd turret is in the middle so you still have to angle a bit to fire it, but at least it's not as bad as this thing.

i play elbing normal with range mod too, its funny to see how cruisers and bbs try to hit you when you are at max range and you farm them to death. oh and elbing vs dd. her guns are good realy good if you try a little bit you can hit them easy at 14+. in most cases if im against other gundds im not hunting them but wait until they show up and then delete them from range. and when it comes to cap, dont go contesting directly delete everything that could be dangerous while caping and than go in^^

I agree with everything you've said here, but it seems like with this strategy you are heavily relying on someone else doing the spotting. I think part of PQ's whole dislike with this ship is that in order to play it to its full potential, you aren't really fulfilling the role of a DD. This is a fine way of playing this ship and I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, just that this ship really does play more like a cruiser.

@@garystew2077 only in part if yo go in aggressive you can force ships to aim at you, while missing^^, the ships fire, and stay dedected, if they go dark. you come closer spot them again und then run and gun again^^. this takes a lot of pressure from your team(if the enimy ignores you the dmg of a elbing can be quite frightening). yes its easier if you have someone spotting for you but this ship can be played without. i can understand why he dosent like the elbing its the same for me with the smokers, i dont like the smoke up forever and farm dds. this play style is to pasive for me.

I have legendary build Harugumo and at the start of the game I use my reload booster so I have torps right away. It takes the same amount of time to reload the normal reload. I find this helpful if I need the torpedoes right away. I haven’t tried it in the Yugamo with torp reload but it may be worth trying. o7

I don't think so. Just the best dd AP pen in the game, AND the best accuracy in the game. The AP is often not what you should be shooting at dds. Fortunately, the HE has been buffed, and is effective enough to use.

All things equal, Elbing beats Ragnar in a firefight, because Ragnar's 25mm plate just helps Elbing to do more damage with AP. On other dds (except Russian), the AP overpens too much to be the best choice. Using HE, it takes a long time for Elbing to kill a full HP dd. Ragnar goes down because of the AP opportunity, AND because Elbing is MORE accurate at range than even Ragnar. Playing Ragnar, I hate seeing Elbings.
