I was dying inside that he wasn’t utilizing the AP very much. That’s what both German destroyers love to use. The HE is used against the tough angled targets. Otherwise the AP is the normal shell used most of the time. It can really slap.

Scrolled down for this, and I'm glad a few people pointed it out. It's not uncommon to do like 4-5k per salvo using the AP, which adds up pretty fast. The HE on the other hand is barely mediocre as far as damage output. The 32mm pen is helpful against angled targets but it's definitely not the preferred ammo for the German DDs.

Especially against a dd with wide hull like halland and daring. Halland is so wide that most dds could arm their AP shells on it with slight angles.

@@hagostaeldmann The thing with Z-52 AP is that HE is even worse. The HE raw damage is so atrocious that when the enemy dd becomes saturated and HE does 1/6 damage, the effective HE dpm is ~28000 while AP overpen dpm is ~36000 - you do more damage with pure overpens. You should definitely proc expert loader and try to find opportunities for using APs more often.

My trick is to run with HE loaded, spot enemy DD, shoot HE 1 or 2 times hit 2 to switch to AP. MOST DD turn broadside in engagements for either full gun access or torps with AP you can erase DD's pretty efficiently.

The AP has short fuses enough to full pen DD's but getting it to arm on 19mm plating is inconsistent, which is why most DD's with 127mm guns or higher, and without special AP, typically shoot HE at other DD's. Z is like the Hindenburg, not the best at anything but comfortable to play. Its just older and power creep has put more radar and other nonsense into the game making it feel worse than it is. Plus the unique upgrade makes it a really fun torp boat with how fast they reload and especially how stealthy the torps are.

It's standard DD fuze time (.010s), not short fuze. DD AP fuze is standard .010s until you get to the bigger gun dds (and weirdly Marceau at the top of the list with .030s fuze.... maybe that's where those odd cruiser citadels come from). The only 'short fuze AP DD is Druid with .005s.

Z-52 does not have short enough fuse times to full pen broadside DDs as it has the regular AP fuse time. Enemy DDs need to angle enough, but not past the ricochet angles, to take full pens, hence the inconsistencies.

I recently unlocked the Montana and I can tell you this: Iowa is a solid tier 9 ship. Because like Montana, Iowa is a jack of all trades kinda ship: mistress of none, but a expert at everything. She can adapt quite well where most BB are situational dependent. You need to fire from long range? She got the guns. Need to brawl? She can fight. Provide AA cover? She'll shoot those planes down. The AP is slow yes but if they connect they hit hard! My pro tip is to have Halsey as her captain which will make Iowa even stronger, than first you wanna get between middle where you can catch the broadsides of enemy ships. And I said she can brawl yes, but remember her citadel is vulnerable (not as much as Japanese or russian BB but still) And the neat thing is that you can do the same with Montana who is simply said a Iowa, slightly slower but with more firepower and believe me... she's a beast you shouldn't underestimate

PQ, you really should maybe press 2 once or twice. The AP is like the only viable ammo type most of the time be used in Z52

Your biggest mistake is not using AP even against DDs. Z-52 uses HE just against angled targets, otherwise AP all the time.

Z-52 AP does not arm on 19mm DD armor. You'll end up with overpens.

PQ; I wonder if you've used the Halland legmod? I have seen CC after CC talk down on it. I use it, and find it very much worth the slot. For the way the Halland plays, the extra healing just allows you so much flexibility, because you actually DO gain significantly (not hugely, significantly...the word choice matters) more health per heal, and you get an extra. What this means is that you can pick those early fights where you have to give up some health vs an enemy DD without heals...then disengage and come back in, over and over through the course of the battle...and end with a greater amount of health for the late game engagements. The speed boost buff isn't huge, but not nothing...but honestly...that healing...on paper with the way heals actually work...yeah...it seems like a bad bargain. In practice...well...it just works. I'd love to see you, if you haven't, try it with that in mind and see what you think. :) Normally, in the 6 slot before the legmod was a thing, Halland being, for me, a torp boat, I'd use the torp reload mod...and get another 13 seconds faster torp reload, and lose tubes more often to incap. The key to making it work is one I think you, having seen the way you play the ship, possess. That is, patience, picking engagements smartly, and keeping an eye towards being healthy in late game. For me, well...I've been playing the game since the beginning of closed beta, and I have 2k games in Halland...but...I'm older, my hand-eye and reactions are not what they were, and I get too aggressive and tunnel-visioned in the heat of the moment...and it STILL lets me get away with all that a lot of the time. For you...well...it's just a matter of taking the strengths you and the Halland bring to the table, and reinforcing those to greater effect :)

"He does exactly what i do But better" Thats probably the best take on Z52 when daring exists...or Vampire 2. They both are far better gun wise with their HE and even AP, having improved pen angles. The only thing Z52 has going for it is the longer range hydro, but it lacks the DPM to kill the targets you spot with it, unlike the other 2 ships. Its just such a niche ship that requires somewhat stupid enemies and perfect situations to work, while Daring can deal with literally anything and Vampire 2 is almost the same.

Z-52 is much better offensively than Daring and Vampire. It has better shell flight times and better speed/acceleration to afford chasing, but in general chasing in a dd is a bad idea. Not to mention the lack of a heal, nullifying this advantage. This makes Dring and Vampire just straight up better.

Yes, because the majority of the player base unfortunately has not yet understood that giving broadside = bad. When you have a player on Moskva who knows how to position and use the armour effectively, it's one of the hardest to remove cruisers in the game. Guns work against all targets, AP smashes at all ranges, it's a great ship overall imo. Personally, I have 100 games played, 62% winrate, 100k average damage. I think of the tier 10 cruisers I own I only prefer the DM over the Moskva.

You should definitely be using more AP with Z-52. For example that Halland in the first game would have melted a lot faster when he was showing broadside. The overpens do more damage than HE pens on saturated parts, and even getting a full AP pen instead of overpen with just one out of 4 shells already brings you to the same damage output as HE on unsaturated parts. If the target is just slightly angled, you actually get pretty consistent AP pens as the 19 mm standard DD plating becomes 21 mm or more effective thickness, which is required to arm your fuses.

You know, when I think about the fact that I have ships in my port like Marceau, Sherman, Kleber, which have 10x this things power level imo, I really dont see a good reason to play Z-52. The 6km hydro is nice but there's really nothing else this ship does well besides that. Mediocre guns, mediocre torpedos, bad smoke, meh maneuverability, etc.

3 years ago it was you and or Notser that taught me how to Pan Euro, I ran with it! Oland 3,000+ games (my favorite to play). Östergötland however is now very power crept! I dare you!!!!! If you really want to feel power creep play Pan Euro Vasteras bottom tiered in a CV match against Le-Fantastic and other gun boat DDs "OUCH". Oland however got a main gun firing buff which in turn increased its AA flak. It can now gun same as a Benson (in using a heal during the fight) and use its long torps to counter Radar ships and campers and it's maneuverable enough to dodge both incoming shells and AA attacks at the same time. You may want to try Oland again too, "the kite fighting king", I'll take on "any capital ship" kite fighting! Insofar as AA attacks it's the king because of its combination of strong AA and its dodginess! Just dodge is viable "with its strong AA" as a preventor of him spending time within my AA aura to outmaneuver me to his advantage. Dude... I win the AA fight! "Can't touch this". The AA countering rules have changed but I've figured it out "in Oland", all other DDs suck. Yes I just stated that Oland is the best DD to counter AA attacks. Halland lacks maneuverability, In open water CVs kick its ass. "Max AA" Oland is free to go wherever it pleases. Thank You for your prior (and current) teachings.

The Z was my first T10. I always enjoyed her.... but I hardly play her. I get clobbered with all the radar and when I play cautiously until I know where the radar boats are I get accosted by my team for not capping with smoke and hydro... sheesh..... no one is ever happy. Yeah... power-crept for sure.

you missed a lot of shots that cost you the ship in the end, haven't play Z-52 since the CV rework. Before was my fav DD, now it is Daring and A.REGOLO. Only thing I hate about Z-52 is that random torp spread, you have 8 torps atleast if this DD has straight forward torps seems that it has worst dispersion for torps

Honestly, I think you are being a little too harsh on Z-52. Yes, the powercrep is real, but it's still far from being the worst DD on T10, like you implied by saying "it's pretty much outdone by every other DD on either range, or dpm, or fires, torpedoes, etc.pp." It's a hybrid. Ofc it's not the best in any of those categories. Sure, the HE is poor in regards to DPM. However, thx to German quarter-pen it does well on cruisers and all the 32mm covered BBs without the need for IFHE. It can do more damage with HE on cruisers and BBs compared to other hybrid DDs due to this. It does more fires per minute as let's say "Gearing" and if a cruiser is dump enough to show broadside, well, it's going to regret it. I mean, I don't want to make it sound awesome. For sure, I'd rather take my Daring out, but in Randoms and even ranked it can do surprisingly well. The fact that people underestimate it, helps with it sometimes. Just my 2 cents, as they say
