Potential sabotage: What's behind the Nord Stream pipeline leaks? | DW News

Жыл бұрын

Danish and Swedish officials on Tuesday said two leaks had been identified on the Nord Stream 1 Russia-Europe gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The news came only hours after a similar development on its twin pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both conduits have become flash points in the escalating energy war that has sent gas prices rocketing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Officials said a pressure drop was detected in the Nord Stream 1 undersea gas channel soon after a similar fall was detected in its sister pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both of Nord Stream 1's two lines are affected, while one of Nord Stream 2's pipelines showed a drop in pressure. Marine authorities identified a gas leak southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm as the likely cause of the issue affecting Nord Stream 2. Danish officials warned of a threat to shipping in the area and asked vessels to steer clear. Swedish authorities on Tuesday said there were two leaks on Nord Stream 1 - one in the Danish maritime economic zone and the other in the Swedish one. The two leaks were reported to be very close to one another. The German economy ministry said it was investigating the incident.
"We currently do not know the reason for the drop in pressure," it said.
Blasts registered by Swedish seismologists
Seismologists from Sweden's National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT that powerful blasts had been registered in the areas of the gas leaks on Monday.
"There is no doubt that these were explosions," SNSN seismologist Bjorn Lund told SVT.
Denmark's armed forces meanwhile released footage showing bubbles on the surface of the Baltic Sea above the Nordstream 1 and 2 pipelines and reported that the largest of the leaks had caused surface disturbance of around 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter.

Why you want a non operational pipeline to be full of gas: 1. To balance the external pressure from the sea water acting on it ~ 7 BAR G i.e. less stress on the pipe 2. To avoid any potential internal corrosion - dry gas (if such) is better than any condensation from humid air 3. Prevent any sea water entering the pipe in case there's a puncture

Speaking to reporters on February 7, Biden said: "If Russia invades, that means tanks or troops crossing the border of Ukraine again, there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2." That would mean one of two scenarios happened. a) The US did it in cooperation with the Danish government, a government that went to election on an environmental platform and enacted environmental issues and protections. If they were to be caught cooperating with the US government on blowing up the gas pipes, it would mean the death of the Danish social democratic party. b) the US blew up the pipes without notifying Denmark. That would create a rift within NATO and a massive diplomatic incident. Both options include huge risks with very little rewards. It doesn't make sense. Russia on the other hand don't have nothing to loose, the pipes aren't used and ain't gonna be used for the foreseeable future, meaning Russians could blow it up and demonstrate capability with very little risk.

A good analysis by Mr. Schmitt, except where he tries to speculate on ‘who benefits’ from the blasts. Here his critical thinking ability sharply drops and becomes feeble. To suggest that Russia destroyed its multibillion dollar investments instead of trying to use gas supplies as a huge bargaining chip - with an energy crisis already raging in Europe and shortly before winter - to me amounts to feeblemindedness.

Yes, but by which side? Lots of people have motives here. Putin's not the only one with a motive to conduct a false flag attack. In fact, Putin has the least incentive here. All he has to do is turn off the tap. He doesn't need to blow up the pipeline. He'd much rather be able to offer to turn the gas back on immediately if he needed to during a negotiation. The climate psychos running the US and EU however, have a very strong motive to blow it up. It's permanent damage to Russia. They'll not be permitted by the West to repair the pipeline because of sanctions. So, it's serves the climate agenda perfectly, but all gets blamed on someone other than the psychos pushing the braindead policies that WILL get people killed. Either way, we have no evidence to support either theory in lieu of the other. Anyone who does speculate that it "must be" either side is a political hack. We don't know yet.

But to act outraged after furnishing Ukraine, which is a long standing and complex issue, with advanced weaponry to fight a proxy war the question is why would Russia keep the taps on? Aiding what the Kremlin considers a Junta, sanctioning Russia economically and then acting outraged when they send a hearty FU back is disingenuous

Not entirely ridiculous. Everyone heard Biden say, back in February, that the pipelines could be shut down. Now, yes the US could be behind it, but everyone in the world heard that statement. Russia could have done it as a false flag (Putin is a Madman for even talking about a small nuke to take out the people who were once part of Russia), the United States could have done it, or a third party could do it to ensure the escalation continued so we would be more concerned with Russia than Taiwan.. lots of possibilities out there.

@@samuellured2262 Damage to the pipelines is not in Russia's interest, but against it, as the result shows, namely that these pipelines remain unused for a long time, if not completely. It is not Russia that benefits from this, but the USA. Example scenario: Should the war in Ukraine end in a few weeks, the sanctions would (have to) be relaxed. Germany would possibly resume gas trading with Russia as winter approaches (or in the medium to long term) because domestic pressure to cut prices would increase on the issue of energy prices. almost all of Europe bears this opportunity cost damage because other parts of Europe were/could be supplied via these pipelines. anyone who rejoices in this news is suspect. and also to blame insofar as he vilely denies the sovereignty of the country Germany in the choice of its trading partnerships like the saboteur. it is an attack on the economic sovereignty of any country that wants to be served by these pipelines. the false flag operation theory by Russia is not thought through because Russia is actually harming itself. Well no matter. Russian gas can also be transported by ship.

The Ukraine? The Ukraine doesn't have any boats that're fit for this purpose. The US, Russia, and even Germany (apparently a pipeline between Norway and Poland just opened) I can see. Any oil and/or gas exporting country with at least one functional (and unaccounted for) submarine I can see (probably not Iran, because of sanctions- you need a modified cargo ship to hide the submarine underneath, but that's useless if the cargo ship doesn't have plausible deniability), but Ukraine doesn't have any of these, so the limit of their ability is to donate an honorary crewman to whatever country _might_ have done this.

if the metal shards face outward it was blown up from the inside with a "pig" caring an explosive device. However the energy expert stated that Gazprom could have sent the pig there for reasons of continuing to stop deliveries without having to pay penalties. The "pig" could also have travelled from the other direction also. It would have had much less far to travel from the German side than from the Russian side. If the metal is bent inwards to the pipe then the explosive charge would have been attached on the outside. This could have been any of a number of states for various reasons. The US comes to mind as having the motive, the means and evidence of presence with recent patrols of a ship with underwater drones it was "testing". Forensic tests necessary when the gas stops leaking out.

What I find most disturbing is how tense they clearly feel about discussing this subject in public. Here in the UK and probably most other western countries, our leaders and the decisions are scrutinized ad nauseum. Our politicians barely ever have a good word said about them let alone their polices. This is what freedom looks like. If you are not allowed to criticise your leaders, or feel uncomfortable doing so, that's a huge red flag for an unhealthy regime. One that will likely not end well

We have unprecedented mass Censorship in legacy/social media here in Canada and down in the USA as well---and one rule of thumb i learned years ago is "Never Trust a Censor" - our governments and our elites have an agenda these past few years that is not the peoples' agenda or in our interests. Klaus Schwab has them all enchanted with his fascist Great Reset or so it seems Yes it is impossible to not have a great sense of trepidation about the Future. On so many levels it just looks dark and darker. I fear we are at the end of an Era that we are going to miss very much.

I doubt Russia would sabotage that, I mean, they could just literally turn off the faucet on their end to stop the gas flow, This should have been caused by other foreign nations, the US at best I would assume. They were the primary ones critical of this pipelines anyway.

They literally did turn of the faucets on those lines before but their reason to do so without violating the contract was probably false. So their long term contract with Germany was violated. An possible interpretation: They won't get such a good contract again after the war so they cause extra chaos and damage to the west. A scorched earth policy.

@mshin291

Russia may or may not be behind this - we need furthur information to even start guessing. But IF Russia did it (emphasis on IF), there are some motivations here as well. Sure Russia can close the pipes, but that move means that Russia is officially cutting off Europe from energy, thus directly responsible for the crisis. This in turn means that pro-Russian factions in EU will suffer some hits on their popularity. If an "accident" happens Russia is not responsible for it, and the pro-Russian factions in EU will not suffer as much.

Not all Nordstream pipelines were blown up. Both NS1 and NS2 actually consist of 2 pipelines. After the explosions, one of the NS2 pipes remained functional - technically speaking, because it didn't get approval from Germany. As for Russia's motive to destroy the pipeline: Russia stopped supplying gas via NS due to political reasons (Putin's decision). And Russia was sued for this breach of contracts. Blowing up NordStream can be a way to avoid paying huge fines.
