After a long wait, I have returned to cover the story of the first successful (technically) military submarine the H.L. Hunley and the mystery of it’s sinking. Although it did kill a bigh fuck off warship, it killed 4x more operators than enemies and was most effective at sinking itself. For this video we have a first on the channel, input and interview clips from two leading experts on the Hunley, Dr Rachel Lance and Michael Scafuri. Please check their respective organizations and books below, they both have done excellent work with the topic and if you are interested in the Hunley they have a ton of material on it.
It’s been a long break, and I appreciate all the emails and comments I’ve gotten showing support and concern, but I have a lot planned and am looking forward to a lot more videos. Be sure to share this one around and I’ll see you soon on the next one!

We've got a Confederate sub (a C-Boat?) mystery here in Louisiana too. In the 1880s they found a sub sunk at the mouth of Bayou St. John just a couple short miles from New Orleans. Nobody knows who built it or how it got there. They've got the wreck up at the state museum up in Baton Rouge now

The only problem with that would be a blast strong enough to instantly kill or even incapacitate a human being would also be strong enough to heavily damage the vessel, Especially since blast waves are worse underwater. Now if you take that theory in conjunction with the lucky shot theory, then you have a scenario where the vessel *just* far away enough for the blast wave to not completely shred the hull, But still close enough for the blast waves to enter through the small puncture and wreak havoc on soft tissue killing the crew instantly.

To be fair to the seditionist slave owners participating in a frivolous slaughter over the idea of not treating other human beings like property, the mechanics of underwater explosions weren't terribly well understood at the time. There just wasn't an urgent need for it as naval combat was for the most part a surface affair involving exchanges of cannonade, although underwater mines (rather confusingly called 'torpedoes' at the time) were a thing. The actual mechanics of underwater explosions and how water actually amplifies explosive pressure wouldn't see intense research until well into WW2. That said, as mentioned earlier, they were also told to extend the length of the arm because fifteen feet was too short, so it was recognized as a pretty stupid idea.

The Hunley and the V2 are very similar in my mind. Extremely forward thinking and advanced for the day, giving us a glimpse into the future of warfare but generally not having a massively noticeable effect on the outcome of the conflict. Both were amazing for the time, but also limited by the technology of the time as well. I consider both to be failures, but really amazing failures.

As a diver and as someone who was in the Navy: They definitely got merc'd by the explosion. They just had no concept or perception of that amount of force being able to affect a metal hull. All the models they had MOST LIKELY said "this amount of metal can withstand this amount of pressure when fired" - but did not account for the exponential nature that water introduces into the equation. If the hull even compressed and decompressed a half-inch, and they were 5 meters underwater, they would have died. **Especially if they had held their breath.**

Mark Rober and the backyard scientist did a video where they discussed the physics of under water explosions cs human bodies and while it’s not exactly 100% applicable to this situation as they discussed the explosion’s effects in the context of a human body without any protection as apposed to being inside of a civil war submarine, I still think that the physics behind it is relevant, and honestly it’s just a cool video to begin with. I would just look up: Mark Rober and the backyard scientist grenade video (that will make more sense when you see the vid, assuming ofc that have you haven’t already seen it lmao)

Living in Charleston, I vividly remember when they raised the HL Hunley from the murky waters of the harbor. I was only an elementary school kid, but I still remember thinking just how profound the whole ordeal was. Being able to go to the funeral where they were able to finally bury those men, who's remains still were left inside the preserved cabin of this craft, was a life changing experience. The HL Hunley was so far ahead of its time. It was brutally hot, deadly, and grueling; a marvel of modern engineering that would help propel subsurface warfare forward into what we see today.

Here's a theory with little research - the boat's "air circulation system" already made the thing a nightmare to be in. The snorkle was up when the torpedo hit, the explosion sucked enough oxygen out of the boat that the crew asphyxiated and died while the boat drifted towards it's resting place. Thanks for finally posting another video.

If your doing civil war naval history, the first two ironclads to battle it out is an interesting tale. As far as I understood it, it was like a malfunctioning forklift fighting a miniature crane that has its turret stuck to "Rotate left"

Confederates: They all said I was daft for building an underwater boat. But I built one anyway just to show them! It sank into the ocean. So I built a second that sank into the ocean too. So I built a third one, that one blew up, crew died, and sank into the ocean!

Speaking as a medical doctor, during strenuous exercise, a person can deplete oxygen in up to about a cubic meter volume of air, per hour. Although I dunno what volume the sub had, 8 people, 8m3/h is significant, especially considering with 3.5 horsepower, they might have needed to work pretty long . And it wouldn't be all fine until oxygen runs and then you start choking, but you'd rather feel gradually exhausted and dizzy/sleepy. Now if you already have a reason to feel exhausted - ie cos of the work you just did - it might have been that you just wanted to chillax a few secs right after successful operation and fell asleep never to wake up. Blast theory wouldn't work so well imo as the change in the medium through propagation of the blast, (water--->metal---->air--->person) should have greatly diminished the blast power, and as no collapse of the hull is reported, its highly unlikely it'd be enough to kill them all instantly. I hope I'm not missing something obvious, like if they had a way to replenish the oxygen, since this take wasn't even considered in the video
