But the worst part is, that it wasn't European NATO members that initiated this, they were actually developing good political, economic and security relations with Russia since Putin came into power and with that a real chance for peace on the continent. Regarding the gas issue : It is not about whether gas and new suppliers can be found. Everyone knows that the EU is desperate for fuel and ready to pay premium price for it. Potential sellers would be brain-dead if they do not capitalize on this and sell their natural gas 3 to 4 times over the market price. Expensive fuel is just one side of the issue. Another is the method of delivery - liquefied gas needs to converted from liquid to gas at a suitable port facility. This takes time both for the facility and ship. Moreover, these facilities have a technical cap - even if you push them to their limits working on 3 shifts all year round, the equipment needs to pass scheduled maintenance and more. Once you convert the fuel to gas form, it then goes through the gas pipes to its destination on the continent. Compare this to gas pipes that will transfer the gas from point A to B, usually from one gas storage to another. It is faster, cheaper and moreover, it can keep on going for longer periods of time without maintenance. A third issue is about politics - the Russophobic policy is not ok with buying fuel from dictators, but it is ok to buy it from Azerbaijan, Algeria, the UAE and other beacons of democracy ? But the most important issue is that there is no longer money to buy expensive fuel - the economy is retracting, there are a lot of job cuts and firms closing down because they are no longer competitive in large part due to high energy prices across Europe. Europe will go broke faster than the politicians who made these woeful choices will be voted out of power.

If anyone thinks Russia doesn’t have a large reserve of weapon reserve in the event of a direct war with NATO, you are fooling yourselves. The main reason Russia didn’t use its full force of the military, but instead used attritional warfare is they need to keep forces and weapons in the event of a direct conflict. Imagine if they used maneuver warfare and lost half its army, NATO can simply walk in a mop up. This is what essentially happened in WW2. The US allowed the Europeans and the Soviet’s to take the brunt of the loses and then came in. Russia won’t make that mistake.

Europe doesn't fear Russia and never has, the days where Russian influence ended at the Spree were some of our best and most prosperitive, why would we care about Ukraine? Not mobilizing 18-25 years old is the only clever thing Ukraine done. Wanting to mobilize those young generations that are the less numerous ones (take a look at Ukraine age pyramid) would cripple forever the Ukrainian population. Ukraine don't really need mass infantry (especially because Russia have superiority in artillery and FAB bombs), they need drone teams. Their problem is desertion and the 800 000 men that fleed the country to europe, not the 18-25. Wanting to mobilize the 18-25 year old is utterly stupid and cruel. By the way peoples from 18-25 already enlisted as volunteers since 2022 and later. Keeping 18-25 out the war allow some young couples to have kids and preserve a workforce for economy, if you send those to meatgrinder it's the end of Ukraine.

They would have to mobilize a lot of people for something like that.

@@Cornpop-f2l Yes i totally agree with you. I'm not even sure they could control all of Ukraine. To occupy a territory you also need a part of the population is quite ok with it. The problem of Ukraine is mobilizing more and more infantry will just put more peoples under artillery and FAB fire. Indeed more manpower is normally best but you need train them in ther speciality "drones", planes etc... Ukraine force mobilize peoles and send them after one week training intro the trenches... Drones indeed don't "hold" territory but if you follow this war you should understand that's really drones who allow Ukraine to have not collapse yet, the drones compensate their total lack of artillery.

I’m afraid the bias you have previously admitted to is showing ever more signs of asserting itself Matthew. This was especially evident in much of your programme today. You appear more and more willing to give the political hierarchy of the West a pass just because they preside over what they claim are democratic countries. But the eyes of many have been opened wide regarding this kind of thinking in recent years. The democratic process may work in some areas, but the decisions relating to waging war (and remember our common experience re. Regime change wars in recent history) are not subject to democratic processes. Those of us who went in their millions to protest against a coming attack upon and invasion of Iraq discovered this and we have never forgotten the experience. While apparently crediting the western power elite with good motives (you never seem to question them) while inferring that the Russians and Chinese (especially the Chinese) can’t quite be trusted, is telling. Anyone who has seen the incredibly dirty tactics employed by a great many Ukrainians or who never turns a blind eye and deaf ear to the vicious nature of the radical nationalists of western Ukraine and their campaign of unadulterated hatred could ever support the Ukrainian regime in this conflict. NEVER. EVER. Having watched and listened ever since the winter of 2013-14 I cannot believe that anyone with a heart and a brain which supports a conscience could EVER root for that regime or the murderous nationalists it brought to bear against the largely defenceless Russian-speaking civilian population of the Donbass. Russia was pushed into a war it never wanted. Even after the war started it was willing to end it. Russia deserves to win its every fight in Ukraine. And one fight it most certainly has all but won is one you didn’t mention Matthew. That was and remains to secure the safety of the entire Russian-speaking population of the Donbass. I can’t help but wonder why you didn’t mention this as it is of VITAL importance to Russia, as can be seen from the Minsk process where their safety was of prime concern. Russia MUST win and for all our sakes. If Russia does not and the western elites do they will press on to create ever more wars of choice and spread chaos within every nation that they do not control until we all find ourselves in a totally West-controlled prison planet where you can hardly dare say or do anything or meet whoever you like, without looking over your shoulder or up above to see who might be watching you and reporting on you. I would strongly suggest you think about that next time you feel tempted, even slightly, to support the regime in Kiev Matthew.

I think the gas issue has been blown way out of proportion as like you say the time has been available to find alternatives and the slice of pie was already rather small for Russia anyway. The lowering of service age in Ukraine shouldve also been done well over 12 months ago as the volunteers in Russia have been a constant in large numbers for far longer than 12 months so the game of catch up in my opinion is already lost. There does not seem to be much choice for ukraine and to say Russia is an existential threat to europe cant be sold when we have moron politicians continually saying Russia is on its last legs militarily or economically. They cant be a threat if they are collapsing as a country. I fail to see how the end of all this goes against Russia in any way unless a huge event takes place that flips the whole field. interesting thoughts on the future of Russo-Chinese relations/power structure. I agree with you that there is a possibility that China is playing the "long game" here and only sees multipolarity as useful for now, but who knows. The really frustrating thing here is that none of that was necessary. If you look at history since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has, again and again and again and again, tried to build a multipolar relationship with the west, up to and including membership of NATO and/or EU, but have been met with nothing but arrogance, dismissal and disrespect. Where was Russia supposed to go then? For decades, NATO ran a strategy during the Cold War of doing everything in their power to keep the USSR and China from growing closer, and were very successful at it. Only to p*ss it all away after the fall of the Soviet Union and basically FORCE Russia and China together. Truly some galaxy level brains in the west! /s.
