It could so easily have been restored from what remained after the damage. It is a heartbreaking tragedy it was blown up and demolished. It is miraculous that it is finally being rebuilt... thankfully!

Thank you so much for these Beautiful Photos, my Great Grandfather saw both the intact undamaged Church before WW2 and the ruins of the Church after WW2. It is horrible that this was done as it could have been saved and restored without great cost, yet in the end the Garrison Church joined the Berlin Stadtschloss, Leipzig Augusteum and many other important Buildings which were demolished in East Germany for ideological socialist reasons.

April 14, 1945? What was the point of bombing Pottsdam at this stage of the war?

The communist authorities not only demolished the Garrison Church but also destroyed much of the historical landscape which surrounded it including many town houses, the canal which ran beside the Garrison Church and the bridge over the canal.

If you walk further down the Breite Strasse past the newly constructed Garrison Church you will see a large number of high rise tower blocks constructed during the 70s which completely ruin the ambiance of the area.

just as they treat people, they also treat culture. Barbaric!

Wonderful to see this, a symbol of hope and correcting the ignorant identification of Prussia with the Nazis. You can see the blowing up on internet too, an act of barbarism.

What the communist regime did there was absolutely inhumane. I am so glad that there are currently reconstructions.
