Pottery: Throwing a Ring Holder

This is a pottery video showing how to throw a basic ring holder on the potters wheel. I generally throw these 'off the hump'. This clip happens to show the last ring holder I threw off of a larger piece of clay. Once the clay reaches leather hard I clean the bottom of the ring holder by hand. I embed a small piece of high temperature wire in the edge or the ring holder to attach the hand sculpted bird to. This was made for you by Janis Wilson Hughes, owner of Evolution Stoneware Pottery.

How do you trim the bottom?

I use a rasp or surform to trim the bottom at leather hard then smooth it with a sponge. A rubber rib will then give it a nice, smooth bottom.

Thank you so much for replying! But, what I mean is, with a normal bowl, we flip it over and put back on the wheel and trim it (I use a griffin grip). You obviously can’t do that with this bc of the ring holder sticking out of the middle. I’m trying to find out if there is a way to flip it over and trim the bottom on the wheel. I tried putting a small pot right side up on the wheel in my griffin grip, then putting the ring holder upside down in the pot, but it still slides all over the place.

@@tiffanytill5277 Yes I understand. I trim 'normal pots' the 'normal way' on the wheel. :) But for these I trim them by hand with a rasp instead of trimming it on the wheel. I've never trimmed these on the wheel, and I've made at least 100 of them. One thing you could try is throwing a small cylinder & letting it set up to leather hard, and using that as your chuck. It might work better as a chuck than a fired pot because the clay will slightly stick to the ring holder holding it in place. If you're not willing to trim with the rasp, that's what I'd try. I hope that helps!
