For the first 9 years, I had mine in my office at Northwestern U with huge windows but no sunlight on the orchid cactus, Tons of blooms. Moved to Michigan and kept it in my house where the windows do NOT allow such great light but I put it outside during the summer, underneath a shrub where it did not get direct sunlight. Again, it bloomed each year with lots of blooms. I "lost" it in my next move, so I am just now starting over. This original plant was from a "mother plant" at a local greenhouse so it was bred to be a good bloomer. Unfortunately, I do not know the variety.

Could u do a video about shaping? I have an old epi that’s all over the place. I don’t want to repot it til next year....but I want to know how to get the pretty hanging pots I see. Mine is not hanging and we use a wrought iron stand right now. I’ve staked it, tied it....idk how to manage it. I see some really pretty draping hanging baskets and just can’t duplicate that. I repotted it 2 times in the last 6yr. Each time I tried to plant it so that it would grow pretty. Sigh. What am I doing wrong lol. I want to be prepared next repot to cut back and “shape”...or at least help in some way to shape it.

Have a question for my mom. She has an epiphyllum plant potted already. The top of the stems are dying. What should she do to save the stem?

Why shouldn't water the plant right after re-potting?

I have a friend who has one of these and I asked him if there is anything he does to get it to bloom...bear in mind he once told me it blooms very infrequently....his reply to my question... Hehehehehe, I moved it to Pasadena! I had the plant for over ten years before it bloomed. It propagated like crazy by cuttings and made plenty of leaves and stalks in New Mexico, Chicago and Baltimore, but never bloomed. One year after I moved it to Pasadena, I saw its first blooms. It's a moody plant. It blooms under sudden stress and it blooms when it's really happy. In between, it just lives and grows.

How do you get these to bloom? I've had mine forever, and nothing. All of my Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter cacti (aka schlumbergera) bloom on time. I don't do anything different with the epi, than what I do with my schlums. What am I not doing? What advice can you give?

Matt Thompson I have a friend who has one and he told me a long time ago it doesn't bloom often. I was lucky enough that he called me one day when it did bloom and it was lovely and had a beautiful scent. I believe he told me the flower only stays that one day. He also said some cultivars do not possess the lovely scent. I should ask if he ever does anything special to make it bloom.

Matt Thompson I was told to feed them tomato miracle grow, and only have them in the sun in the mornings, or keep them hanging under a shady tree that gives them only periods of direct sunlight
