Hi Jase , I agree with your comments ref compost and this year I have used recycled compost with added fish , blood and bone .My cucumbers have very good germination and growth . I am also worried about the tap water which regularly smells of chlorine.I am now collecting rain water.

Hi. Yes i sow my seeds in last years compost as much as possible but i think those courgette and cucummbers were in fresh shop bought. Clover too which I normally rate. I always use rain water when possible, bu in the height of the summer we dont have enough until I add more collection tanks.

It is 24c here overcast and a 30k wind/breeze 🤷♀️. Glad your wearing a glove 👍. I chitted all my squash and cuke seed so I’m not sitting watching a pot of dirt 😂😂. Same here they look leggy and limp 😢. But we deal with it and move on. I stuck my tomatoes out yesterday so 🤞 they did ok overnight so I’m hopeful. Have a spectacular week ahead and hope everything grows well, Ali 🌤️🇨🇦

Good plan with the chitting. Stiff breeze that. I accidently left my toms out all night a few days ago. It rained all night and the trays were full!! They seem ok though. lol

Hi Jase, I've just sowed my cucumbers today 5/5/24 these are for greenhouse, if growing them outside a good tip is to sow end of May for outside varieties, I've potted a load of brassicas on, I still have my main crops to go in the 30L buckets, will do next couple of weeks, I put a soil thermometer in today into the raised beds and its still to cold where I am to plant, I always plant end of May start of June, your cucumber plant in the clover could be deprived of oxygen Jase if the soil is permanently wet, try potting it on to fresh compost with perlite, could be many things as you say, great video, Steve Colwell

Thanks Stephen. You have a lot on there. It’s warm down here in Shropshire. Think we could get rain today though. Sky looks pretty dark.

Hi. I hope it works out for you. So many composts now really are rubbish. It’s a lottery

Just wanted to say, I have had a lot of plants that have grown so far then stopped. Being a novice I was convinced it was my error and ended up buying plugs however I now think it's the compost because as soon as I pot up the healthy plug, they die. This is my 3rd attempt with cucumbers and courgettes and this time I have bought what I hope is better compost, certainly the colour and feel of this compost is far superior ( although obviously I have no idea). Will let you know if I'm successful ❤

I have the same problem with courgettes, pumpkins and cucumber. Very poor germination, and I've tried 3 different compost. All were new seeds packaged 2023 with a use by date of 2026.

It’s a strange year for germination Colin. I don’t know what’s causing it.

Я не знаю откуда вы, но там где я, огурцы и кабачки почему то особенно и тыква имеет в этом году плохую всхожесть.

I've chitted everything this year except carrots and parsnips

Wise move I think looking at germination rates

@@leatonveg I did it because I had a few packets of seeds from a well-known seed supplier and none germinated got new seeds and chitted them saved waiting around to see if they germinated

I think we are getting old seed in (in date packets) from lockdown times.

Those cukes look a little unhealthy agreed so a good time to pot on. I watched a video last year about liquid feeding (weak) with the new peat free composts and showing how it made all the difference.
@leatonveg6 ай бұрын
Hi Mike. I think seaweed liquid feed is good stuff. Compost isn’t what it used to be from the shops

Ever tried direct sowing the cilantro/coriander this time of year? Even in my climate it works as they don't mind cold.
@leatonveg6 ай бұрын
Hi Robin. I haven’t tried direct sowing coriander. I’ll give that a go next time.

Hi Leaton , this year I had 100% germinating with cucumders , butternut squash, and all of my marrows, but had problems with Sweet Peppers, they germinated OK but then just stopped growing, I have also tried peat free compost, not impressed for seed germination, because of the course nature of the material the top seems to dry out quick and the bottom is waterlogged, perhaps its me, what are your thoughts. Regards Bob
@leatonveg6 ай бұрын
Hi Bob. Good sucsess there on your cucs etc. I dont rate peat free compost. I add vermiculite to seed trays etc as it holds on to some moisture and seems to help with drying out and cracking, but its to expensive for everything when potting on. Peat based is best in my opinion because it holds moisture.
