Hi hope all is well. I currently own a boogie cactus. Mines is soft/semi squishy. I water very little and it’s in a well draining soil. Do theses get soft from under watering? Any advice?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron :-D yes it definitely sounds like your Booby cactus is in need of more water, these cacti have a habit of going a bit soft and squishy and a little bit wrinkly when dehydrated, Spring and Summer these cacti like to be well watered, and watered every time the soil in their pots has totally dried out, I water mine every time the soil has dried out but keep completely dry in Winter, I hope this helps and good luck with your Booby cactus :-D thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic plant powered Thursday XXXX

Hi Lyn & Hans... Love your videos! I too go for those crazy weird types of cacti. Does that horticultural sharp sand have vermiculite in it or not? Some I see like on Amazon do & been told not to use vermiculite unless it's for seeds.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Denise :-D the horticultural sand doesn't have any vermiculite in, its best not to use it as it holds too much moisture but its great for seeds, but I prefer to avoid it as it keeps the soil a bit too damp for cacti and succulents but its great to use for all other plants :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for watching and sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER and have a wonderful day XXXX

I know you can't use beach sand but what about pumice from the beach? Can you rinse it first? Is the problem with salt a pH thing?
@mariamachuca3993
@mariamachuca3993 5 жыл бұрын
Why can't beach sand be used?
@emmitstewart1921
@emmitstewart1921 5 жыл бұрын
Salt is not a PH thing because salt is PH neutral. It's a sodium chloride thing. Sea salt is poisonous to plant life. Some plants can stand more salt in the soil than others, but it is not good for any plant. Beach sand or pumice has so much salt in it that it would take hours and hours to get it all out of just a couple quarts of sand. It's easier to get proper horticultural sand. Builders sand contains too many fine particles and mud. If it is river sand, it can be used by passing it through a one milligram sieve, keeping the particles that stay in the sieve, and throwing away the stuff that passes through. This usually results in about two thirds waste and produces a huge cloud of silicone dust. If you do this, do it outdoors and wear high quality respiratory protection. Emphysema and silicosis are nothing to fool with. All said, it's just better to get the horticultural products. If your local garden center can't supply what you need, try to find a Bonsai nursery. Bonsai trees are grown in a very well drained soil and the trees need to be repotted frequently, so the nurseries usually carry soil making supplies. Among the soil drainage additives they often use are Akadama, Turface, pumice, lava rock, and horticultural sand. The pumice they sell comes from volcanic areas and is free of salt.

Hi! I recently got one of these a few weeks ago and noticed that it's getting kind of soft. I've only barely watered it once so far... Any idea why it's getting a bit soft? Thanks!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily :-D If there are no signs of brown rot then I think it may be due to needing a good watering, these plants can go a bit soft when the need watering, and can feel spongy to the touch, I would give your cactus a good water now, but keep mostly dry over the winter months, but if your cactus still is soft a few days after watering and there are no signs of rot, then it may be best to take it out of the pot to check over the root system for any signs of hidden pests that could be affecting the plant, good luck with your cactus and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Sunday XXXXX
