I work as a behavioral therapist for children with autism. It’s definitely possible to teach her how to potty train at 3. We usually start our nonverbal kiddos with PECS or sign language so they can communicate when they have to potty. We start on scheduled sittings with dry checks every 5 minutes with a reinforcer and gradually fade the schedule out until they’re self initiating. Shes doing so great! She’ll get it down in no time 🤍
@apadillaa Жыл бұрын
We also try to steer clear of the potty training undies and put a pull up over their undies for naps and sleep time so they know the sensation of feeling wet without the mess. Praising her for successfully pottying is so important and making sure that you let her know it’s totally fine to have an accident and we can try again next time also really helps. I hope this helps in some way!

I know this is something you arent even worried about right now. But ive noticed in all the videos that she consistently “W sits”. Shes doing this because she has weak core muscles and her legs muscles are both tight and super loose. She sits like this because it provides a wider base of support. If she continues this she will have some posture issues as well as a higher tendency to walk pigeon toed later or have knock knees. I know its a lot for her but just fixing her legs or repositioning her to sit “criss cross applesauce” or in the “4” position will help her a lot. Also giving her a verbal que of “fix your legs” might help her a lot. My credentials are developmental specialist in the state of NM and i work with autisitc children ages 0-3

@@Tameka731I mean honestly, I’m not exactly an expert on toilet training, but I work with children with autism and some of my kids are 4-5 and aren’t yet toilet trained due to lack of willingness of the parents, busy schedule or just frustration. That fact that she’s consistently trying is awesome. But toddlers are going to cry..and especially kids with special needs, schools are pretty much expecting that..at least in my state, children with autism can usually go to special needs classes at 3 whether they’re potty trained or not, cry, scream, whatever.

@@Tameka731children who are mainly non verbal use other ways to communicate. Crying with or without tears is communication. Children with autism are all different with regards to potty training. Parents and carers and educators tend to know when the child is ready because they learn the cues from the child. My granddaughter will be 2 in December and she is potty trained already. HOWEVER, each child is different and it depends on when that child is ready and is showing signs that they are aware what's going on. Like bringing you a pamper/pull ups and wipes.😊 If they can do that, then they probably can say pot pot. I also use the potty chart with stickers and prizes and it worked marvelously.❤❤❤

It is never to early to start potty training especially when you have special needs children. Both of my children were trained by 2 years old. With everything consistency is the key. Also the potty should be kept in the bathroom so that she knows where to go when she needs to go to the bathroom. Set up a schedule like when she first gets up in the morning , after breakfast before and after lunch and before bedtime.

I think kids vary a lot. My son was quite dyspraxic, so we weren’t expecting it to be a quick process, but he surprised us all by not needing any ‘training’ at all - he just started using the adult toilet by himself. We provided a step for him to reach it after he nearly fell in trying to climb up to the seat, but that is all it took. He did not sleep more than an hour or two at a time until he was about 7yo, so nights were no different to days (left a light on)

I think she would do great I have Asperger's and even though I had a lot of delays potty training I got it down and one of my friends kids who is level 2 autistic got it down too. Not true, all 3 of my mother's children, including my nephew were all potty trained completely by age 1. It seems like as the years have gone on, parents have gotten more lax & as a result, they're at an age where they are no longer babies, they are "young children" but still are not potty trained. I think 3 is much too old to not be potty trained & still wearing a pamper in particular for average abilitied children. The expectation may be quite different for a child on the spectrum as we must give an appropriate consideration to their delays & ability to understand. Mikko on the other hand, I DO BELIEVE IS HIGHLY INTELLIGENT & CAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING, so now that you've started, I have NO DOUBT she'll knock this thing out the park in NO TIME!!!

I feel Mikko exhibits behavior of child who is always rewarded but no true discipline. Discipline is not a comforting pat on the back to reinforce her negative ways. I'm not saying to pop or hit your child. But she understands so much more than you may see...from outside eyes looking in. You have leverage to get her to use the potty. She wants to wear the training pants, but in order to do so let her know that's what goes on for potty use....it's not easy no potty training is, but discipline is a part of it. Gentle life or not. Good Luck

I work as a preschool teacher (2s) and all of my schools require kids to be fully potty trained before they can move up to the 3 year old class. Idk if that's the standard anywhere else but now I'm curious 🤔👀 Also (unsolicited advice for anyone who wants to hear it) for the moments when switching between diapers and underwear may be a struggle, what I typically do is keep the child in diapers until they've started using the potty consistently. Simply because it makes for less confusion in terms of "it's okay for me to pee in this so why isn't it okay for me to pee in this," it is also in general just less of a hassle, and for kids who may be more sensitive to the texture of diapers, once they get introduced to that comfier texture of underwear, they will more than likely get upset if you take it away and give them the rough texture back
