Poughkeepsie Galleria - Raw & Real Retail

This is our walkthrough of the Poughkeepsie Galleria in Poughkeepsie, NY from March 14, 2019. This is a big, fairly thriving cookie-cutter mall from the Pyramid Companies that really doesn't offer anything over the Galleria at Crystal Run except a slightly off-white color palette. The amount of homogeneity in the colors chosen for the interior of this mall just boggles my mind. Why on earth use off-white on off-white on off-white? I did not enjoy walking around this mall.

I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The current health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the shutdowns and restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall.
I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this.
There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, KZbin, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush...

By no means a dead mall,lots of natural light but sadly saw no central fountain ⛲ which every mall needs.A plus an attached Target and Best Buy stores with direct mall access👍

Was there for the grand opening on 8/1/87. Used to love Lechmere. I think JC Penney is the only remaining original store now.

That’s a pretty good mall. I’m also near the Danbury fair mall which I think looks really nice especially around christmas

It looks like some puked vanilla ice cream all over and used that for paint. Bleh. Could be worse. Could be a two time Simon mall. It needs more than one color. And every mall needs neon! Again your videos and soundtrack give more life to these Stepford malls

I think the Walden Galleria (also a Pyramid Mall and my local mall) has a better color pallet than this. I also found interesting that some stores are in the exact same location like the JcPenny's in front of the staircase and the build a bear across the hall from it except ours is on the upper level. There are more stores that are closed at Poughkeepsie Galleria than Walden which is at almost full capacity.

A far cry from what it use to be back in the 1990s up until 2009. I don't even go in this mall unless I really need something. All the good stores are gone.

This is my local mall. Fun fact: while shopping there last week for school clothes for my kids, I passed that candy store and noticed a lot of commotion inside. I stopped to see what was going on and overheard a man say that all of the candy was FREE because the store was closing. Being a mom, of course I went in to grab some goodies for the kids. People started to fight over the candy, so security had to come down and get everyone out, lol. I was the last one out and it looked like a war zone with candy all over the floor.

Also, the mall next to the Galleria, now called The Shoppes at South Hills, is an interesting example of a dead mall brought back to life. At one time, the South Hills Mall was an indoor mall. After the Galleria opened literally right next door, the South Hills Mall started its slow decline. It became a dead mall, but a major renovation brought it back to life. The indoor mall was closed. It is now a collection of stores only accessible from the outside, including a grocery store, 2 furniture stores, Christmas Tree Shop, Burlington Coat Factory and a few others.

If you haven’t already, check out The Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, NY. Yet another example of a once thriving mall that is now dead. I watched as the smaller stores left, then eventually several anchors including Macy’s, JCP, Sears, and Old Navy. I believe the only thing keeping this mall alive for now is the existence of Target, Best Buy and Dicks Sporting Goods, all located at one end and all with mall access. During my last visit, they had done some remodeling. Hopefully it will attract some new life into this once thriving mall. It is the only mall in between Poughkeepsie and Albany, and isn’t far from the NYS Thruway, so there’s great potential.

Thanks for your informative comments! We chose to skip Hudson Valley Mall because they were renovated by Hull Property Group, who are notorious for tuning malls into carpet-lined hallways that feel like doctors' offices. I also hope it will bring business back to the area. But Hull's track record is very dim, and there is at least one video showing the remodel off and if you ask me, it is a bit depressing.

The mall has had too many ups and downs since 2011. The stores are always changing and it went from a crazy bush mall to a dead zone half the time.
