I never cease to be struck by the beauty of this piece, as well as many others of Poulenc. In my opinion, he is one of the most underrated and underappreciated of composers from the last century.

0:41 has to be one of the most uncomfortably beautiful phrases I've ever heard. Like wandering into a spider queen's lair

JS Bach 3 voices Invention in belle epoque fashion. So gorgeously fluid.

I'm just discovering this composer now, and honestly, my ear think he's the closest composer to perfect I've heard thus far. In addition to the impressionistic melodies that continuously travel, I adore the chords that he chooses. For instance, in the second measure, the second and third beats where the melody lifts brightly only to fall on the 7th of a MM7 chord. (That poignant note heard at 0:05 ) It makes my heavy heart sink every time.

I wish I knew the pianist: this piece is played suitably gently all the way through.

Pascal Rogé is the pianist. He has recorded most of Poulenc's piano music.
