Might be interesting to mount the LEDs further apart, or (if that little cell can provide the power), have three in series - R, G and B. That would be quite psychedelic, Man!

Man, I am getting very old, I can feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes, but I just gotta go back, Wwwaaaayyyyy back to the 1960's to say "dig it! Man that is one cool light, why it's outta sight, it's all right, " gonna have to make me some of them for our RV and around it when we head back for Arizona come fall! Yep, even with the ooops in the middle, a very cool conversion, you are indeed an artist in your own right!

I find myself wondering if this could work with three LEDs in a triangle - perhaps RGB, perhaps some other combo - and the dome adapted to rotate... moving the crackle relative to the LEDs could give a really nice effect.

How about using those automatic fading LEDs, not sure if the pcb would be able to work with them. But if you put a couple of those LEDs in the dome it might get interresting once they start going out of sync
@awmperry
@awmperry 6 жыл бұрын
Charlie Dobbie - Exactly the effect I'm talking about, but with this crackle effect. And, as I say, three LEDs to maximise the colour variation. Jay Herde - the key would be to have the dome rotating relative to the LEDs so the pattern changes rather than just turns.

That would be a good application for color changing LEDs. I like to couple them because the colors change at slightly different intervals which results in endless combinations of colors that change as the cycles progress.
@charliedobbie8916
@charliedobbie8916 6 жыл бұрын
Low voltage LED devices will typically switch the LEDs on and off rapidly. This causes a colour-changing LED to keep resetting its cycle, so you only get one colour out of it. You can fix this with a suitable capacitor to hold the voltage high enough to keep the chip running.

Cold white is nasty, dunno why it's even a thing. To me it's like "Hard" toothbrushes. Pretty much only detrimental, except for alternative purposes like cleaning. Blue light has negative effects on the circadian rhythm, will give you insomnia - part of the reason doctors advocate an hour or so of LCD screen abstinence before bed.
@SproutyPottedPlant
@SproutyPottedPlant 6 жыл бұрын
Wolfin I often end up with the hard toothbrush ☹️ many lovely lighting designs seem to be ruined by the use of cheap angry blue LEDs including the common durable low cost rubbery torches I am fond of. Luckily there are still Incan versions so I can drop in a module with a better LED. If I had Clive's skills and dexterity I would modify all my torches.

@Malakie
@Malakie 6 жыл бұрын
There is one thing you also should have done. I have done mods like this myself.. And one thing I always found is the battery drain became an issue. So I remove the generic battery which you will find are usually about 1000 mAh and put in around a 2000 or 2100 mAh NIHM battery. Now all my lights last all night without dimming at all. Prior, they would run out of energy before day light turned them off and started to charge them again.

Interesting mod. I've of seen strings of identical LEDs, as many as a hundred all in parallel across a circuit that looked just like the circuits in one-LED solar lights. Hadn't thought the voltage was adequate to drive more than just one blue or one white LED. It would be interesting to apply a scope to the power going into the LEDs.

Hey Clive, I’ve had a couple of solar powered LED strings from amazon and they’ve both gone the same way - strangely some of the LEDs toward the end of the string have gone progressively dimmer. I’m sure there’s charge in the battery. Anyway I’m happy to send you one of them if you’d like to diagnose and resolve? They were only like £7 but seems a lot of value and I really like them, it must have happened to other people. Feel like a little project at no cost to yourself? Cheers, Robin.

They would require the addition of a diode and capacitor if the light didn't already have them. Just a 1N4148 and a 100n capacitor so that the pulsing of the supply didn't keep resetting them to red. With the low current involved you may find that red tends to dominate anyway as it pulls the voltage down a bit lower.

Can one or two of these be used to power an Arduino? That would be really useful. Even if it only powers intermittently it could still be good for sensors.

I wouldn't recommend that. It would be better making a solar charged lithium power bank assembly.

Looks super. Doesnt having 2 leds in series though mean an effectively double forward voltage? Doesnt that affect the operation or is it pulsing the leds on and off?

It seems to handle the slightly higher LED voltage fine.

That's what I was thinking. I guess putting in parellel would consume more power

Yes, but also diodes in parallel cause other issues. If they have a mismatch in forward voltage (for example, if they're different colours!) you may find only one LED will light, or one will be much brighter than the other.

The LEDs will be pulsed anyway, even a single one. At least when it's a simple boost converter with absolutely no feedback. I haven't seen the circuit, but it will most likely just "charge" an inductor which will then pump current through the LEDs. The circuit will always put the same amount of energy in the inductor, not matter what the youtpur voltage needs to be.
