Button cell batteries are quite pricey, annoys me when theyre in cheap electronics, usually the battery is 4x the price of the thing you're putting it in
@stinkycheese8048 жыл бұрын
They're really not that bad if you buy in bulk on eBay, say 100 at a time except in something like a flashlight, the current limitation makes it junk, no better than the flash on your cell phone if even that bright. Then again I'd consider the Poundland 3x AAA to not be worth the cost of the batteries either, unless you happened to have a lot of spare NiMH rechargeables lying around with no other use for them, but even then, something like a Nebo Larry or generic knockoff is going to be near the same size and much brighter, just costs more too but shouldn't something be reasonable good to bother with it at all, when we're talking about basic necessities like a flashlight and much, MUCH better can be had for under $20 USD. The lesson learned by most flashaholics is that you can keep buying more and more junk, or just put the money towards a really nice light in the first place and save a lot of time while enjoying it the whole while.
@JordyValentine8 жыл бұрын
I don't plan far enough ahead to buy in bulk haha, I have a few things that use 2025's and when they run out it usually means a trip to the supermarket because i need them now haha I agree with the whoe flashlight thing, I have a beast of a pocket flashlight, it's marketed as a tactical flash light haha, I'm not so sure but that little LED is almost as bright as a halogen work light
@paulsengupta9718 жыл бұрын
The thing about buying cheap torches is that you can buy a lot of them. I have a stack of them so I can keep them in the car, in the aeroplane, in the kitchen drawer, next to the bed, on the table here beside me...and yes, I do have a stack of cheap NiMh batteries!
@stinkycheese8048 жыл бұрын
Yeah but THOSE? Way TOO cheap. I've been pleasantly surprised by the $2 (ebay) Sipik SK68 1xAA lights, particularly their versatility in having both zoom and candle mode (lots of people don't realize the bezel can be unscrewed to do that), BUT although I have spares lying about, I never end up using them because I EDC a light just as bright but smaller, and have others much brighter and longer running, including task oriented for what these Pound-brand lights can do (broad area) would be something like my Nebo Big Larry. Even the generic junk I've gotten from Big Lots for free (with coupon) are better than the Pound-lights, and yet I don't value them enough to even put new batteries in once the originals drain, unless I'm doing something where I literally expect the light to be destroyed.

You know how clicky ballpoint pen works? Similar mechanism. It ratchets with each click to a different position, as well as going up and down. Inside a pen, put a mark on the part that has the jagged edges, and them reassemble and push it a few times. If you take it back apart, you'l see how the mark moved. That concept can easily make and break multiple connections.

In business reviews of PoundLand, they said PoundLand typically marks-up the price of the merchandise delivered to the store by 18%. With the recent (Fall 2016) decrease in the value of the pound by 17% (roughly USD1.22 for 1 GBP), it doesn't look good for future Chinese Tat at PoundLand.

My winner, without a doubt, is Sams 99p, their LED Zoom torch has a round LED chip, hard to judge the size because of the lens, and focusing that really does work. Runs on 3xAAA in a fat cylinder holder - conversion to Li-ion would be difficult, as the case is plastic and the holder brings the rear connection to the front in a tip and ring contact arrangement. It too has a "non-wrist" strap. Not kidding, this is prodigiously bright, you would not want to look into the beam.

I've had it for a few years but the high output LED started flickering recently, very annoying, probably the switch so I'd watch out for that.

The button cells are commonly AG1, AG3, AG4 or AG5 if small button cells. Larger button cells are AG13. You can buy these button cells in packs at some shops, or on eBay (I got 100 AG4 cells for about £4 for watches and clocks etc). AAA batteries are much more common though, and have a higher capacity.
@CookingWithCows8 жыл бұрын
is the one with the button cells maybe marketed for emergencies? Can the button cells stay in the device for longer periods of time until in an emergency situations it's needed? Could be good to have in the car, if it breaks at night and you need to have a quick light for a rather short period of time. How long do you think the button cells would last in storage and for how long would they provide power to the LEDs?
@jusb10668 жыл бұрын
modern alkaline button cells tend to leak after about a year, the older mercury cells would work for a decade in storage, better off looking for something that uses lithium, you can even get lithium AA and they last for over a decade in storage, ideal to keep in a simple flashlight for emergencies. also buy a flashlight from somone like varta, who actually tell you in reliable lumens and running time, they do a ragen of tough ones, add in some lithium AA and you have something good for 10 years at least.
@Seegalgalguntijak8 жыл бұрын
How does the Poundworld one know whether to turn on the 3 LEDs on the side or the one in the front, when there's only a "clicky" type of button that was pressed? It must somehow remember its last state, but then it can't, because there is no chip - which would need to get its power continuously from the batteries anyways, but the switch interrupts that...?
@bigclivedotcom8 жыл бұрын
Ratchet disk that rotates inside with multiple contacts.
@techy41988 жыл бұрын
The switches are a rather clever bit of engineering, all the alternation happens mechanically inside the switch, by rotating a contact to form the different connections with each press. The rotation happens by a similar action to how a clicky pen works, if you've ever looked inside one. I have a black flashlight similar to the poundland variety where the switch has a fourth state in which both outputs are lit.
@veraxis99618 жыл бұрын
Forget the light, I would buy it and just take out the button cells. I don't think you could buy 4 button cells for that little normally. Which, as you say, also makes it pointless to try to replace them when they eventually die out if you used them on the light.

I just hacked my Ikea led 3 cell aa solar rechargeable desk lamp which never really worked to charge the 3 cells ever. so I decided to solder a usb cable direct to the credit board and run it of any power bank , this worked but now I am worried because it was not designed to run off 5 v and much higher current , the led heats up and I measured the current , it is draining the power bank way faster than the capability of the power bank @ 2 amps and the voltage is dropping to 3.7 . I am guessing I need to add a limiting resister .

You could use a diode in series to reduce the 5V to the equivalent of three freshly charged NiMh cells.

I thought there were EU rules about mechanical restraints of battery holders with this kind of small coin cell

Yeah, I have my doubts about whether that torch is actually legal to sell.

the cheap shops have sold lots of dodgy goods, from dangerous usb power supplies to mains extension leads that are not tested to the bs standards etc

A couple of years ago my sister's boy had an electronic fart simulator he got with the Beano. I took it off him the first chance I got and found that it was powered by a stack of those button cells.
