I enjoy the video. I’m a new general contractor looking at building my own spec home. I’ve gotten all these estimates from concrete companies and they are just outrageous in labor so I’m looking at doing it myself. It’s been a long time since I’ve poured concrete, but this video brought back a lot. Thanks.

It sounds like a fantastic, one-of-a-kind business starting course that you will be offering. Most business management trade courses seem to try to bore a person to death with workmen's comp, liability, payrolls, bonding, subbing, marketing, and on and on but neglect the art of the trade as in how to maximize the sweet spot of honest profit and minimize costly mistakes which can bury you. Your 40 years experience rolled into all that would be amazing.

Hi Mike - great video. Our house was built 40 years ago (August '83) with a standard 8' concrete foundation and 4" floor. In the last couple of years I have noticed several small patches of eflorescence. The biggest one is about 8 inches in diameter and is causing some slight edge cracking. I didn't watch them pour the floor but I am assuning they put down a vapour barrier, even in '83. We have had several floods of 4 inches or less due to power outages (sump pump) - we put in a Generac 5 years ago so that solved that problem. The concrete was also flooded with at least 12 inches of ground water in the 3 months after the floor was poured because we didn't have power yet, so the concrete was essentially wet for its first 3 months. Question - is it possible that the eflorescence I am seeing after 40 years is as a result of the "top" moisture over the years, instead of any moisture from underneath the floor slab? Thanks. Doug

Slump usually shows up on site as a 4, then we tell the driver to mix to a 6. It only takes a little water to increase it since the water reducer is already added in the truck when they batch it out.

The speed of the video likely makes the slump appear higher than it really is. At first I was thinking your mix was like soup from how the paste splashed quickly away from the boots. At normal speed, I’m guessing it would look stiffer. We use a WR admixture when pumping or placing thin element columns where their’s steel congestion inside the forms.
@jaymann535 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't work in construction but I watch alot of videos like these. I'm from California and most of these guys I watch use pumps. I'm trying to understand why you never use the pump trucks. Out here the pumps are pulled by pickups. Maybe by you the pumps are semi style with a big boom? It looks like you have easier access to your sites. I guess you can give a guy a job instead of using a pump guy. Is it a profit / cost thing? Curious! Thanks.
@psidvicious5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely a profit/cost thing. Whenever you have the opportunity to pour straight from the truck, it’s always the preferred method. We call it ‘tailgating’ the load in my area. Boom pumps and even 2-3” trailer pumps are expensive and always have the potential for a breakdown. So the more factors that can be eliminated to simplify a pour, the better and more profitable it will be. 🤜🤛
@MikeDayConcrete5 жыл бұрын
Money is always a consideration but the deciding factor for me is if I really need it or not. We do use them occasionally but only if we can't reach the pour. It's 850 for a boom and 750 for a trailer pump, plus the extra yard of concrete. I don't want the waste the owners money if I can place the concrete another way.

How much do y'all charge for (roughly) a 20x 12 basement floor
@psidvicious5 жыл бұрын
Where I’m from (So.Fla), we practically never do basements. The high natural water table just makes it prohibitive. We did a basement in a parking garage, for the city of Delray about 15yrs ago and they’re still regretting it. Just to build the job, we had to run 2 concentric well-point systems and even after seeing that, the city still could not be dissuaded from doing it. I guess when you’re spending other people’s money it’s easier to ignore the obvious. 🤷♂️ 🤜🤛
@MikeDayConcrete5 жыл бұрын
Yea, it really depends on where you live if a basement is done or not. I can't speak for other states but here it's most of the houses we do. I'll pour 100 to 150 of these a year (April - Nov.) I used to do even more when I had a 7 man crew.

How thick is the slab? 28x30=840 sq feet Assume 4" thick slab 840x(4/12)=280 cubic feet 280÷27 cuft/yard= 10.4 yards or about two trucks of 6 yards. Is this how you calculate the proper yards?
@MikeDayConcrete5 жыл бұрын
The floor was around 4" thick. It might of been 30x30. That's the basic formula for calculating yardage. I got my own way I can do in my head. For 4" floors I divide the sq ft by 80. 840\80 = 10.5 For 5" floors I divide by 65 and for 6" floors I divide by 52. These are pretty accurate and allow me to figure concrete very fast. If I need to by really accurate, like when I'm doing estimates, I use a formula like what you show. Or a concrete calculator on my phone. My way at least tells me how many trucks I'll need so I can call in my order and reserve the concrete trucks.

know nothing about concrete, but as for business, only need EIN if paying employees. Taxes - if you anticipate making a certain amount you will have to pre-pay an estimated amount every quarter. Going LLC is a good idea so that if you have an accident or something tragic happens, the worst that can happen is your business gets sued but they can't touch your personal property. Definitely shop around for insurance... go big names and then private names and compare what each one gives you and then how much your premiums are.
@psidvicious5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like good advice. Most businesses that tank are usually the result of bad business practice. Not bcz the person(s) don’t know they’re craft well enough. Good business practice is not always fun or interesting but is essential for the success of the business. I’ve known plenty of people that knew surprisingly little about the ‘nuts and bolts’ of their business, but were just good at running the operation. 🤜🤛

I think that's true for most new business start-ups. They know the skill set but not how to run a business. My goal is to help those that want to start and run a successful business in this type of work. It's a dying breed but doesn't have to be with the help of others.
