This entire series is quite impressive for the wannabe DIYer like myself. Clearly laid out in a way I can almost talk myself into doing one for my own home. I don't half the infrastructure to really tackle a project like this properly, in way of power and hand tools. I'm amazed how few mistakes or whoopsies they made, and perhaps they're being edited out, but they're still accomplishing quite a lot each day. This was the first video where it's really starting to come together and the finish line for the rough construction is in sight.

We had loft conversion done . To make 2 double beds and a bathroom . I consider lofts one the more challenging building projects . It was a 9 week project but the end result is well worth it . Thanks for posting wish i had seen them we had our loft done.

great content, just watched all 7 videos, Started out the day just planning to board my loft and fit a loft ladder as a simple hobby room but now I am going to follow your route with wal to wall joists, What was your biggest span? mine is 4.1m so looking to use 47x200mm C16 joists at 400mm centers. Looking forward to the next instalment and know subscribing.

Watched all videos on thos project. Very good content. My only criticism is the level of the music compared to the talking. I kept having to turn it down. One question on the project, did you need to get a design and calcs drawn up so you knew what size joists, beams etc to use and also to show building control? Thanks
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there were some editing teething problems early on. I'm not a videographer by trade, just a man with a camcorder! Yes I had calcs dine by structural engineer for joist sizes etc. Building control will discuss basics with you like fire requirements, insulation etc. Building notice is better if you are doing DIY job as they will inspect at agreed stages and you dont submit a lot. If you go full application they will want full plans and drawings, more for builders that do quick turnaround. Thanks for watching.

@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ratch, no steel beam in this project. The span was small enough from one side of the house to the middle load bearing wall to use just wooden joists. Due to the nature of the existing roof structure there is no requirement for a beam at the ridge. Thanks again for watching!

I noticed your house is over 100 years old would you remove your old ceilings or would you repair them as there very dusty if removed
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
When I renovated the house I left the old ceilings in place and overboarded with plasterboard so the lath and plaster and mortar remained in place. This meant I didn't get any mess when carrying out the work. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Should've notched the ceiling joists and then attached to bigger joist with hangers after

POUSE around the HOUSE yeah I think you probably would have damaged the ceiling below if you’d notched the ceiling joists, although you do seem to have over-cut the notches you have made. Did you forget the plywood packers when measuring?

@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 5 жыл бұрын
I have wooden wall plates sat on the brick walls below so I can screw straight into them. If you screw into brick or concrete then yes you need plugs, or you can use special screws that self tap into masonry. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Hi. U did not remove old ceiling and u made attic floor on top of old ceiling? Which joist size did u use? (Joist thickness & width )
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 жыл бұрын
3x7. I did that to save height. Yo could go for a taller thinner joist. It depends on the span of the joists. Get a structural engineer to work it out for you. Hope that helps.

Hey can I ask when you put the joist in the stairs is going to be fixed to, how do you kno the measurements? Have the stairs already been calculated? I'm doing the same kind of project I can do all the work myself bar the stairs I have never done stairs so just wondering how will I know where to set my trimmer and header joists? Thanks
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 жыл бұрын
I added the height of the new joists, floorboards, plasterboard etc together then added this to the height from floor below to the ceiling below (i.e. ceiling height of your downstairs landing). In theory this should be the height you need. Then I went on the stairbox website and used their 3D stair designer. Put in my height, width and other dimensions and it worked it out for me and gave me a 3D drawing and a plan of the stairs. Best to over estimate by a few mm then you can just trim the post and bottom step down if required. That's how I did it, but it's the first time I've fitted stairs or done a loft conversion! Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on.

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE thanks. My loft space is just about tall enough to convert so I'm looking at ways of minimising any floor and roof height. What's the min dormer roof thickness do you think I can get away with? What's the total depth of your floor and roof (if you built a dormer) thanks.
