POV - 1981 Mercedes 240D W123 ascending Passo dello Spluga - ASMR Youngtimer driving

Come for a drive in this 1981 Mercedes 240 Diesel, right after the re-opening of Passo della Spluga, or Splugen Pass, first week of May. The pass is located between Italy and Switzerland, starting from the city of Chiavenna in the province of Sondrio in Italy. Interesting and beautiful scenery, plenty of snow still at the top, and 72hp working like they should with enough torque to bring this W123 at the top.

Nice to see a Fiat Strada in front at the start, I'ts actually the most selled car here in Brazil, great little cars. My uncle had one like this, it was loaded, even with sunroof. Really nice little cars.

This is the first time i see a W123 Diesel with a rev counter. I know they were an extra for some of the petrol/gasoline ones, but i didn't know they were also available for the Diesel powered ones.

Amazing car. I'm surprised to see that you exceeded 5000rpm a few times. I thought only modern diesels could rev so high (evidently I was wrong!) Is that what is referred to as an "Italian tune up"? 😅

Old diesel aspirated Mercedes can rev so High up to 5000

They could but they are of course not meant to be driven like that. It’s an old car so it should be driven like one too. Those diesel engines did not like high rpm at all.

Thanks! She actually doesn't smoke. Fully rebuilt injection pump + injectors with Monarch nozzle all calibrated and multiple liqui molly diesel purge treatments. She drives fantastic, next February I will drive it to the NordKapp in the peak of the winter.

They are on, the headlight switch is in the on position, and you can see them on the side of the tunnels. Old car lights are not bright.

Too much torque for this car. Enjoying driving an old Mercedes diesel requires a lighter foot on the gas pedal.
