More accurate than a hour's measure and fast but more complicated. I would have to do this using notes in the field. Really interesting, thanks Dave.

BRILLIANT! Nice old Silva Type 15 as well. I have 2 of those and barring the Suunto, it is the best map compass I have used. Hopefully the old shadow stick method will be scrapped by everyone eventually and recognized as a flawed method. Thanks for sharing your research brother!

Hey, Dave, is it possible you could do a video about making activated charcoal in the woods? I have yet to find a good video on it and think it could be useful. I’ve heard it’s possible to activate it with lye from wood ash, which you’ve shown us how to make, but I’m not sure if that would be safe to ingest. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.

If you are in an area where your compass might be effected by iron ore deposits or something else this might be a good way to check to make sure your your compass is giving the correct bearing or if it has gone way off course other wise it is still a worth while skill to learn, practice, master, own and reteach. Thanks again Dave

@7:20. You mention doing the method with one stick in the ground. BUT...you did need two other pieces of information: the distance the shadow moved in an hour, and the number of hours past (or before) the zenith (e.g. an accurate local time). How do you infer the distance to the inferred shadow without the distance the shadow moves in an hour? In other words, can you really just walk up to a stick in the ground and find north (to a reasonable accuracy) with only the local time and that single shadow?

So the text method was off 30 degrees. I’m curious how far off would it be to say the sun rises in the east, sets in the west, the middle is north. More or less than 30 degrees?
@michaelgeiss741

Shouldn't the small sticks go into the ground at the end of the main shadow, with a time gap in between? The video shows the main stick shadow extending well past the points where the small sticks are driven into the ground. If the small sticks were driven in at some point along the shadow instead of at the end, that could explain why you didn't get a good east west line.
@michaelgeiss741
@michaelgeiss741 5 жыл бұрын
Here is the technique I use: Drive a long (4 to 6 foot) stick into the ground well enough that it doesn't move around. At the very end of the long stick shadow, drive a small stick into the ground. Wait about 15 or 20 minutes. The tip of the long stick shadow will have moved straight east from where the small marker stick was driven. Mark the new position of the end of the long stick shadow. Wait longer if more accuracy is needed. If the ground is level and clear, the movement of the long stick shadow tip will move very accurately straight eastward.
@DavidCanterbury

I don't think you have much experience with this or didn't pay attention well enough the Pins themselves will also throw a shadow making it appear that they are not at the end of the shadow stick shadow even though they are when placed in the ground.
@DavidCanterbury

Your technique is Flawed unless you live at 23.5 degrees latitude and are taking the reading on Dec 21st or June 21st respectively

@@DavidCanterbury Thanks for your channel. I am a fan and have watched your content for a long time. I carefully watched the video to make sure I wasn't missing anything. You can see very clearly at the one second mark that the main shadow extends quite a bit past where the pin is inserted. That part of the video would have been taken just a few minutes after the second pin was driven, as the main shadow has continued moving eastward. Are you saying that the holes for both those pins were made at the location of the very end of the main shadow in both cases? That would mean that the tip of the shadow had moved from the base of the first pin to the base of the second pin in an hour, and then to a point quite far off of that line when the video was made. Except at extreme latitude, the path of the tip of the shadow will approximate a very straight line.

@@DavidCanterbury I do celestial navigation as a hobby. I have done this test in the US, Argentina, Nepal, Singapore, and South Africa. I often place pebbles or coins on the shadow tips of table corners when dining at outdoor cafes, just so i can see the point move eastward. I use a compass app on my phone to verify the line. If I place a coin every 5 minutes it draws a beautiful straight line. The earlier in the morning or later in the evening, the faster the shadow tip moves. Anyway, I really appreciate your excellent content!
