Forget the fact how informative the video was, right off the bat knowing where to find the maps and the scale is worths its weight in gold. I still use the old hagstrom maps, they were made for Eagles to read. Thanks Guru.

Good job explaining map reading, and basic orienteering and map making. I used to teach the orienteering course in basic training when I was in the Canadian Armed Forces back in the 1980's. Skills that will never go obsolete, and that I firmly believe everyone should be taught in grade school. I wonder just how many lives would be saved every year if everyone was taught basic map reading and compass work in school, and didn't get lost!

Dave Canterbury is the man 👍 I live in the Seattle area and I use the Space needle and/or the Columbia tower as a fairly accurate visual reference to let me know where I am and if I can't see them I can usually spot Mt Rainier from the south. Seattle has some hilly places but you won't have to walk far to change your view.

I had to do this last year when the gas company needed a new access road for some pipeline maintenance me and a crew of gas surveyors had to plot out a new trail that they turned into access roads

US TOPO Maps is the app I use on my wilderness hikes. For 12.99 you can download all kinds of different USGS topo, Forest Service imagery, etc. It'll track your position, and you can mark waypoints, like springs or whatever. The best part is, the maps download to your phone and most of them will work even if you don't have signal. Of course, if you lose your phone, break it, or let it run out of juice you might be phooked, so having a backup paper map is a good idea. But i've been able to do a good deal of extremely accurate, off-trail navigating between a good lensatic compass and my phone.

After you make you map. Buy a copy of it and mark it too. Store the 2nd map in your vehicle in a ziplock bag labeled ... "In Case of Emergency. My offmap Trail Locations. Where i Travel." Rangers, Police will be thankful if leave them clues where to look.

Good information! I am not against using technology, I just don't have a GPS. But I'm an old school Army Ranger and can navigate just about anywhere with my CMMG tritium lensatic compass, protractor, map and Ranger beads!

There are also gps cameras and most recent phones now add the coordinates in the attribute of the pictures. This mean that you can simply snap pictures of the trail and have the coordinates and a reference image associated.

Dave, check to see if lidar maps are available in your area. It's like laser mapping of the terrain from satellite. Like a topo map only more detailed. There are also programs to overlay lidar on other map formats.

I see, though, that I am going to have to look through your vids for a more beginnerish one. Even so, I learned a lot, so well worth the watch. Also, you mention MilGPS for iPhone, but just as many people have Android devices. What would you suggest for those?

Call your local fish and wildlife office or Forest Service/BLM. They can and will print you maps for free or 5-10 dollars depending on size. They have the most up to date maps along with boundary lines(VERY important for hunters/trapper). Only “downside” is they are not sent to you. Depends on how convenient you want it to be.

The best mapping app I have found is called onXHunt. It's a pay app but it's fantastic because it's got gps tracking, satellite imagery, terrain markings and, best of all, it tells you exactly where you are, your coordinates and who owns the property. So, if you are on a trail and want to know if you're on public or private land, the app will give you that information
