There are two versions of the story about Medusa, the first one is she was born a gorgon and was slain by Perseus. As you can see she had sisters who were gorgons also, they are Stheno and Euryale. The second version, created by the Roman poet Ovid, is about Medusa being once a beautiful priestess of Athena who was raped by Poseidon in the goddess' temple, and due to the goddess' wrath about that incident, she punished Medusa because she was meant to become virgin like Athena because the golden rule to become a priestess of Athena is to be a virgin. In this version, her sisters were never mentioned. So, it's obvious that the version where she was born a gorgon is the original.

Actually, in the early version of Medusa: the thing people should note is: The story of her being a victim was written after her origins were already established.
