In this match day vlog, I show you my pre-match sports photography routine when shooting football, as well as some general match photography.
Arriving at a stadium early gives you the opportunity to look for some stadium shots and set the scene with some general wider viewpoints. I’ll share some of my sports photography tips and also show you the types of shots I look to get when I have plenty of time before a game.

Thanks for the insights. Nice to see, that I’m not the only guy running around with a Peli 1510… I love the different shots before the game. Gave me some ideas. Great video 👍

Thanks for watching Pascal. The trusty old Pele has been brilliant, sometimes I do consider upgrading but there are better things to spend money on! Plus, I'm pretty clumsy and the Pele is so tough!

I love your videos. I just started shooting this season( national league). Can u ask I have a canon r6 and Mac. Which would u say is the best way to send pictures to computer live so I can send to club during the game. Thank u again

Hi Darren, thanks for watching and sorry for late reply. I haven't used an R6, but if the WiFi transmission is reliable, then see if you can set that up to send to the laptop. I've only done that a few times with the 80D and it was shockingly unreliable. So I still use the trusty card reader, a selection of memory cards and do it the old fashioned/manual way! Best of luck in the National League - I shot there every week for 3 seasons, some great clubs and great people at that level

Nice Video, as always, thank you. Some questions from an enthusiast that shoots lower leagues in Germany, if I may: 1. Do you use PhotoMechanic - it looked more like a Lightroom style software an your laptop… 2. Do you rate photos in camera? 3. How do you transfer the photos during the game to the laptop? Wireless, SD card or USB cable? And one more complex question. When it comes to goals, what images do your clients (club or newspaper) prefer: that moment when the ball is in the net (ideally with a keeper and the shooter visible), the before the ball goes into the net, when it just left the players foot/head/hand (in Maradonas case) or the celebration afterwards. BTW: switched the Peli case for a ThinkTank roller case … Greetings, Sven

Hi Sven, thank you for watching and for the questions. Apologies I'm a little late replying to this. Answers as follows: 1) Primarily I use Lightroom unless shooting for an agency, in which case I will use Photo Mechanic to tag/caption the images 2) No, I generally haven't done this. 3) Memory cards into a card reader and then that goes into the laptop via USB. You need at least a couple of memory cards per camera to do this, but for my old kit is the most reliable way of doing it. Would love a transmitter to send the images wirelessly! Your last question is a great one. Generally, celebrations make for the better shots in my opinion, but I don't really notice a trend in terms of what is used. It's great to have a shot of the goal being scored, but it's not always possible. Ideally, I'd send the scorer striking the ball and then the celebrations, but each goal is different. I remember one a couple of years ago and the most popular shot of a last minute winning goal was one of the goalkeeper diving with the ball flying into the top corner - goal scorer wasn't in shot. That probably doesn't help. I'd stick to the general rule that, if you don't get the goal, make sure you get the cele!

@@Talru Thank you for answering so extensively! And yes: Reliable fast wireless transmission without a mobile phone in between would be great. If Fuji would not charge 1.000 Euros for that new high performance transmission handgrip I would like to test that out.

Just curious, wouldn't it be better if you reduced your ISO a little bit? I see a lot of noise in your photos, however they are still great.

Nice to see that insight, thanks and sorry for your loss. Just wondering which camera you prefer (pixles?) and how you manage time to edit without losing the possibility of a goal, or is it a half time job?

Probably got the computer there then usually you can use the noise of the crowd to know in time to look up and be ready to shoot.
@Talru

Exactly that! Sometimes something can sneak up that you don't get much warning of and it's likely all of the other photographers will nearly miss it too, but usually you can hear/sense when action is coming. I also try to keep my laptop goal-side so I only have to glance up to see where the action is

Just curious, why are the first photos f3.2 rather en f2.8? Is not lower ISO best?
@lucycopsey6439
@lucycopsey6439 Жыл бұрын
Probably to ensure that the whole player plus a bit is in focus and most top end cameras now can produce super sharp images into the low thousands of ISO so it's often not an issue if ISO goes up a bit.

Hi Hakon, Lucy. Yes, Lucy is spot on, just gives a little more depth in the image which is handy when more than one player is in shot. Once the light starts to go, I will flip back to 2.8
