Sport Photography - How to Photograph a Premier League Football Match. Tips & Camera settings
I sometimes get asked a number of questions regarding a days photography at a football match and how to Photograph a Premier League Football Match. What time we arrive, where do we sit, how close do you get to the players etc. So I thought I would try and cover some of the days movements and what we get up to from start to finish.
I currently work as a freelance photographer covering various sporting events for The Press Association, mainly football. I am lucky enough to cover Premier League matches most weeks through the season, with Cricket, Athletics and Cycling amongst others keeping me busy through the summer months.
I sometimes sit pitch side and think how privileged we are to get so close to the action! Fans pay a lot some games and sit a lot further back than we do, so it’s always good to stop for a second and be grateful that we can get such good access to carry out our work.
This match didn’t have to much incident unfortunately, so not too much action captured! No doubt I’ll film another match before the end of the season.
Please feel free to ask any Q’s in the comments section. Camera settings, kit etc and I’ll do my best to answer.

Watched this 3 times now and would love to see more of the same! When I was a season ticket holder at Old Trafford, my eyes were focused more on the photographers than the game at times especially when there was little action on the pitch. Nowadays, I photograph non-league and loving every minute. Look forward to the next vid of the day in the life of a football photographer 😃

Just found this video as I'm looking to get into sports photography myself. Have been shooting a bit of basketball and go-karting and a few shots at the Silverstone Grand Prix this year (2022). What a great insight and huge kudos to you keep swapping bodies depending on the shot in front of you. Will definitely be subscribing now and watching through the rest of your videos. One question, which I probably already know the answer, where to start? And I think the answer is local clubs and progress from there.

Great video...quick gear question, when you shoot with the 400 and 70-200, are you using the 7D2 body on the 70-200 to "close the gap" in focal length between the 200 and the 400? It looks like you aren't using two 1DX, but I can't immediately tell if your other body is 5D or 7D.

Great video. I'm matchday photographer for WSL Blues women - no pitchside ethernet where they play! I'm lucky to not need to wire out from the pitch like all the PA/Getty/Reuters/Rex photographers - I send mine up to the Blues media same evening while sipping on a beer. I'm still using the 1DX like you (and the 70-200 on a 5Diii) with a cast iron 400mm 2.8 mki. I'd never have thought 20 years ago I'd be into football photography, but I absolutely love it.

Hi Mark, commenting from across the pond here in Maryland. I really enjoyed this video, especially on how you managed to juggle between the 400 and 70-200. Question: What is the usual aperture you shoot at for futbol matches? F2.8 might be too wide open because then the other players would be out of focus. Your thoughts?
@MarkKerton
@MarkKerton 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video Tim and getting in touch. Great to know the video has reached Maryland. I think the majority of sports photographers shoot wide open at 2.8 to 3.2, ensuring you have a nice drop-off and really make the players stand out from the crowd and backdrop. It can be a bit tricky if you have two players running at you, one will always be slightly soft but as long as you focus on the player with the ball, That is the most important bit I do however shoot at F5 .6 on the 70-200. Just to ensure I do get two or three players nice and sharp when capturing the action in the goalmouth. Hope that helps Tim👍🏻

Mark this is a great video and at some point I would like to be a full time sports photography. Your video is amazing I was able to feel the environment and also see "a day in a sports photographer". I'm curious on knowing what gear you use? Also if your focus is merely on the half or 1/4 of the court that you are? Also (besides of the lens size obvios reason) why swapping between the cameras; what you were trying to photograph? Finally: do you use AI Servo and which focus mode you use the spot or area?
@MarkKerton

Hi Ricardo. Thanks for getting in touch and supporting the channel. I recently put together a "Whats in my bag" video with all my kit on show. I swap lenses as the 400mm is for all the long shots and then as play moves closer I change to the 70-200. Hope that helps Ricardo.

@MarkKerton
@MarkKerton 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tommy. 1st half I was sat on my own so it didn’t impede anyone else’s view. 2nd half I was sat in a row of guys so we usually take the hood off if it’s not needed so everyone can see clearly towards the goal. Then it started raining so I popped it back on.

Hi Mark, Do you have a favourite position to sit at when photographing A match, I always sit in line with the 18-yard box either Goal line or Touch Line I will admit mine is Southern league games so do not have the crowd problems.

Hi Keith. Thanks for getting in touch. I’m very similar to you, 18 yard line mostly. Although Saints first half I tend to go to the sideline/corner flag for any cele’s. Think the 18 yard line is a happy medium at most grounds. Hope that helps👍🏻

Mark do you send everything back to the desk off the camera or do any culling of images in camera before sending?
@MarkKerton
@MarkKerton 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I just select the frames that may be relevant for a possible story through the game. Fouls, yellow or red cards, bad tackles, manager reactions and of course goals and cele’s. Then once back home I’ll download the cards and look for any possible stock images, man & ball type frames or top half portraits. Any frame that could accompany a future story. Hope that helps

Few questions: ISO auto or manual? Do you get good shots of opposite end goal with that 400mm, or do you focus on shooting action in same side of the field you are positioned? How many photos do you shoot per game? Do you use back button focus? Thanks for great content!
@MarkKerton
@MarkKerton 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joonas. Mainly shoot in AUTO ISO. The 400 is great for far end goal action yes, the ideal lens for sport. Usually average around 1000 frames each game, action depending of course. Some 0-0 games can be as low as 400 ish! I use shutter button focus. Just can’t get my muscle memory into BBF! Hope that helps Joonas👍🏻

Hello from Texas! Great behind the scenes video! A couple of questions for you - do you edit any pics or just select a few to transmit? On average, how many pics do you shoot in a typical match and how many are sent in/edited? Subscribed! Thank you!

Hi Stephen. Thanks for your kind comment. I sometimes edit myself and send from the laptop, mainly during lower league matches. The average match shutter count is probably getting up to 1000 frames I’d say. An average transmit count would be around 50 images or so. We then do a 2nd edit once back home and a further 30-50 might be sent, man and ball type frames for stock. Thanks for the sub👍🏻

That was a great video. First time watching your work. If you have time I have a few questions. It looked like you were shooting at 5.6 or 4.0. Why not 2.8?. Do you use single point focus? When you send pics straight from your camera those are unedited I assume. Are they edited by the service you are sending them to? Do you shoot Raw? I just saw in another post that you shoot JPG. Is that right? BTW, great pics!! Sorry, one other question. Do you use Auto ISO ever?

Kent AufDerHeide Thanks👍🏻 I tend to work at 3.2 on the 400 as it’s getting tired now and has lost some quality but more importantly sometimes I’ve found the players chest can be sharp but his face slightly soft! So 3.2 eliminates that I find. 5.6 is used on the 70-200 to ensure I obtain god depth on a group of players for the goal mouth action. Single point focus as a rule (latest video) All frames are edited by my editor and we always work in jpg. Phew🤣 hope that helps👍🏻

Hi Adrian, sorry for the very late reply! I’m not sure about the Lumix camera set up, but that word 4K gives me nightmares! Only being that I don’t have a huge memory on my laptop or a lot of hard drives for anything in 4K it’s going to use up a lot of time and space! As a rule, we just shoot in JPEG and send off 1-3 MB images. To achieve multiple images in a burst you need to be keeping the shutter speed up to around 2000 of a second👍🏻
