I really love all quiets depiction of how adapting to survive a traumatic environment in a scale never seen before (and only gets one upped by its sequel) breaks people and reshapes them to only be able to thrive when surrounded by violence. Its sad to think that every single one of the men in these pictures has now passed. Frank Buckles was the last surviving World War 1 veteran and he passed away in 2011. I really like this. My great-great-grandfather was a German WW1 soldier, and I never got to hear any side of his story. Him and his family moved to America right as the nazi party occupied Germany, and from what I can assume, faced a bit of oppression as Germans who couldn’t speak any English yet.
