My great grandfather fought in ww1 in italian army. He was 28 when he got recruited, in 1916, in the 22nd infantry regiment. When he leaved home, his wife was pregnant of their first daughter (she sadly died few time later, when he still was in the army). He taught to his next sons a particular story. They were in a really high mountain, maybe around 3000 meters (im trying ti figure out exacly wich mountain), and with them there was a soldier that probably wasnt even 17. The poor kid always cried in the front. My Great grandfather taked him like he was his old brother, or his father. He always tried to calm him, even if the situation was living hell. Later, at the scream of: "si salvi chi può!" (We can translate it has "everyone for himself!"). So they had to run away from the mountain. After that brutal retreat, with all the avalanches, the artillery shooting, that was the last time he saw that poor kid. He anyway managed to went back home and had 13 sons! He died in 1965, at 78 years old, only a few years before he could get the Vittorio Veneto crux. I never had the luck to met him, but i anyway love him. See you in heaven, nonno Francesco...

LoL I don't think anyone on the battlefield would have said "Avanti Savoia" maybe the generals and high ranking staff, but the people in Italy has killed the father of Vittorio Emanuele III
@pippo_beffardo6 ай бұрын
everyone screamed "avanti Savoia" because it was our battle scream and it wasnt the people of italy who killed Umberto I but Gaetano Bresci with a terrorist attack. plus the fact that Umberto I was killed doesnt mean italians hated Savoia family. indeed everyone loved Vittorio Emanuele III because he was always close to the soldiers. in fact he was called "the king-soldier".
@frog-h7w2 ай бұрын
Actually, the Savoia family was kinda liked by the population. The man who shooted at Umberto I was an anarchist. All soldiers screamed that cus it was their battle cry, even if some of them could not understand it (example: my great grandfather fought in ww1 and he was from Sardinia, he barely spoke italian, almost only sardinian). Hope ive been helpful.

Ok.. so an Italian here, just correcting you a bot, the origins of “Bella Ciao!”, Bella ciao was USED by the CLN and partisan resistance during WW2, the song was not created during world war two. It was written and sung during the 1890s by mondine “weeder” farmers working paddy fields in the greater alpine region. It was made because of protest of the harsh working conditions and overall strikes due to lacklustre benefits from the Italian Kingdom.

@@niroquenta7048 it is a military trial, there are civil laws and military laws, so when a soldier is charged with for example treason or crimes against humanity, he is brought in front of a military court, the court martial, which is composed of officers and acts as judges and decides the fate of the soldier, normally it is hard to be found innocent so most of the processes ends in imprisonment, radiation from the military or, in extreme cases, death sentence.

@@D1mee so the italians had a lot of War crimes back in the day?
@D1mee2 ай бұрын
@@niroquenta7048 not really, but obviously a simple soldier who has seen basically thousands of others die pointlessly being told to attack the same fortified objective heavily defended could think of escaping. The point of the video I think is that many times you could be court martialled without actual proofs, particularly after losing battles, my great grandfather was there and he recalled how after Caporetto many officers court martialled and executed soldiers simply based on hints both because they wanted to scare the others away from trying to escape and because it was convenient for them to blame the losses on unfaithful soldiers rather than on tactical inefficiency. The idea of war crimes become popular after ww1 to prevent people from using mustard gas and then after ww2 the list was expanded to punish Nazi leaders in the Nuremberg trials and then expanded to prevent more inhumane methods to be used banning for example flamethrowers after Vietnam and limiting the actions against civilians, which is why today there are many objections to this rules as many feel like they have become too strict and dangerous.
