Hi Matty… When I did my time on Cockatoo, those saws were all the go 🤣. I reckon the saw they had up in the Apprentices School ( we first-years weren’t allowed to use it), must have been fifty years old in 1966 😱. Bulletproof is the term I’d use mate… and that one looks like it has been well maintained 👍 Can’t wait to see the next instalment Matty. @bostedtap83992 жыл бұрын
@@MattysWorkshop Hi Matty, never heard it called " Hammer Tone", only " Hammer Finish ", probably other names it's known by. Here's a good story of using Green Hammer finish or tone. Early on in my apprenticeship, (1978 to 82), I was working in the main machine shop, at the one end was the mens washroom and toilets, with 2 round wash stands, urinals etc. The urinals were standard full height porcelain type with a common gutter in a shallow "U" shape about 20 foot wide. A new shop hand or labourer started, his job was to sweep up, remove swarf, tidy and clean washroom, his hours were an extra 15 minutes before and after the standard shift. For some reason he stayed after longer and painted the complete 4 foot tall urinals in Green Hammer Finish paint, he had got the paint out of the skip. What a sight going in first thing, obviously he was told to stay behind after to clean it off; no, instead he paints it White gloss!!!!!. This time he was ordered to strip it all off now, which he did, washroom stunk of paint stripper. He was sacked the next day. Stay safe, best regards John Quinn.

Hi Matty, I have the same machine, China made 15 years old, paid $700 for it, castings are very good. I buy Eclipse blades, cheap up here in Philippines, $10 each, these machines are common here. Yes they are slow but who cares, have all the time in the world, prefer them over a bandsaw with there inherent problems. Replaced the contactor some years back after insects made a home in it. The helical cut gears are bulletproof and this machine will outlast me!
@MattysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Gday Willem, from what I’ve seen these machines where copied and renamed a lot, slight changes here and there but basically identical, I must have a look around for the eclipse blades, I’ve been buying Sandvic and there around the $25 mark, these machines were definitely built to last that’s for sure, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers

Another high-lite to a boring rainy day. Thanks Matty! I have a little Cowell stashed here (sold by Sears up here). Like a shaper - absolutely hypnotic to watch. I used one in High School and jumped at a chance to grab one years later. With a good blade they are awesome - low heat dead straight accurate. Very good story to go with yours! All the best Dan
@MattysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Gday Dan, there a great machine to have and it’s quite easy to sit there and just watch it cut, the bandsaw I have is much quicker but I can see it’s a lot more expensive to run, I normally go through a blade on the power hacksaw every 8 to 10 months but the Peres a lot of cutting in that time, bandsaw blades are a bloody lot more to buy and don’t last as long, I should really be using the hacksaw more often and not the bandsaw, appreciate you watching and commenting mate, Cheers

Are you trying to shame me into cleaning mine up, Matty? Like you, I took mine over from my father when he packed his workshop up after his first stroke. He also offered me his tilting bandsaw, but I declined that because of the cost of replacement blades and I was short on space so it was one or the other. I'm interested to see the works inside the hydraulic lifter, so keep going - I'll be watching and rooting for you!
@MattysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Gday Russell, the hydraulic lift system is extremely basic, I’ll be showing this and I’ll try to explain it the best I can which is something I’m not that good at, this really didn’t need anything doing to it and would of lasted many more years as it was, I seen the movement in the crank arm end and thought the paint could do with a freshen up so here we are, I am glad I’m doing it though, appreciate you watching and commenting mate, Cheers

I was given a similar unit a fewf years ago - it is brilliant. The coolant pump doesn't work on mine, it just gets a squirt with a bit if cutting fluid every now and again, and it just keeps powering on. The only hassle I have with it is if I am trying to cut something of small cross section, the blade tries to cut to deep and jams, sort of have to half hold it up while it cuts. If I could find a finer tooth blade that would probably fix that problem, but blades are not common, and are expensive, so I use what I can get. Luckily I get years out of a blade. The reason I wont replace it with a band saw is that this just slides under the bench out of the way when not in use. A Band saw I would need to find a dedicated space for it on the shed floor.
@MattysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Gday Jack, the coolant pump has never really given any trouble, only the odd times where the hoses have blocked up, I found cutting RHS I have to hold the arm up while it cuts down throw the side walls, it does get a bit savage otherwise and there definitely much smaller then a bandsaw, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers

As you pull this apart it's interesting to see the combination of good workmanship (the dovetail and shims for the main arm alignment) vs the sh%tty castings. In those days a lot of this sort of stuff was an outright copy of a better brand and it is easy to see how they went about saving money. It's surprising that something of that vintage has lasted this long - it may actually be a lesson to us in that saving on non-essentials can still produce a durable solution.
@MattysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Gday Neil, I honestly didn’t realise the castings were like this, I’ve never had the machine apart before and to find the imperfections really made me think the same, the proof is there, it may not look as flash but it’s done the same job as a much more expensive machine would have, there’s really bigger all wear in it considering how much work it done, Dad did say it was always oiled and never ran dry, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers

I had a 4-1/2” grinder catch with a knotted wire wheel on it and caught it in the forehead last year (tight spot, nowhere to go so I had to just take it). That was unpleasant. Actually blurred my vision for a minute, split my forehead open and left a substantial lump. I don’t know if it was good or bad, but the gearbox hit me rather than the wire wheel. Be careful, those things don’t play nice!

Gday, I’ve personally never seen a Ercole 310, I’ll do some googling and have a look, with the experience I’ve had with the bandsaw I got it’s ok’ish on thin material as long as I have the material laying down, I run a 10\14 pitch blade which is great for stainless, for thin material I think a fine pitch blade would be the best bet and slow down feed, I really hope this helps and if you have any questions please ask mate, cheers
