I finally bought an Ohio Power Bar off the boneyard last month (literally, just last month, before the world collapsed!) based off your prior videos and some of Coop's. Thankfully, I've watched you for awhile and thankfully I listened. I love the bar and I'm enjoying it everyday right now! I also picked up last month at a huge discount, used once with the boxes, Ivanko comp 25kg plates off Craigslist because I wanted to test them out after seeing your prior Rogue comps. Needless to say, I'm happy to have the extra weight right now!!! Thank you, again.

What are your thoughts on the American Barbell Mammoth? It’s on closeout for $395 which puts it in the same price range as the Rep EX and SS OPB. Do you think the knurling will be sufficient for deadlifts assuming I use plenty of chalk? Hard to resist such a high quality bar at this discounted price 😫
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
Just depends. AB are a bit over priced IMO for what you get (usually a medium knurl), but if you don’t really care for super aggressive bars then 395 is a decent price.

They are well made bars, IMO. I have the Grizzly. I like it a lot. But then, I like the knurl. It is funny, it is very much a "medium" knurl but somehow it still seems grippy.
@markblain2029
@markblain2029 4 жыл бұрын
Richard Mather Agreed. I got the Mammoth and its certainly not the sharpest knurling I’ve ever used, but there’s a fine “sandpaper texture” to it that makes it nice and grippy. AB is definitely overpriced but a super solid brand IMO
@richardmather1906
@richardmather1906 4 жыл бұрын
From my experience with the Grizzly, the AB knurl is fine for deadlifts and great for everything else. You may even find you don't need chalk more than you would with any other bar. With chalk, I doubt you would have any problem at all. But if you want an aggressive knurl, this is not it. The AB knurl seems to have finer contact points but more of them. It is hard to describe. It does not bite into your hand, but you grab it, it is pretty solid. I hope they never change this, as it gives those of us who don't want a sharp knurl a quality bar to buy.

How proportional is the whip on a Texas Power Bar compared to a deadlift bar? I know you said you'd never choose 28.5 and thick collars in this video, but deadlift is my best/favorite lift anyways, and since I can't afford a deadlift bar too I think I might be fine with a little whip on a power bar. Just as long as it's still pretty good for Bench/Squat (even if not as good as a 29 bar in your opinion)
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
Deadlift bar is going to give you a lot more whip due to the 27mm diameter and how far out the weights are pushed. But that being said a TPB will give more whip on a deadlift under heavy load than most other power bars.

Hi Brandon, I have been looking at the Strength Shop bastard Power bar. I was told by a friend that strength shop just get Chinese imports and you can get them through ali baba for like 25% of the price. Not sure if this is correct , and has put me off. would you say the bar is worth buy through Strength shop?
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
I liked my Bastard power bar, not a bad choice. A lot of things come from China and a lot of things can be found on Ali baba, however to get them you usually have a minimum quantity to buy and have to go receive it off the boat. So not as easy to get as you’d think.

Hey Brandon, I ended up goin with the PR-5000 30in with the front feet for a rack. Now I'm considering a barbell. I'm looking at the Rep Deep Knurl or the SS OPB. I'm figuring I can't go wrong with either bar so I'm thinking I'll grab whichever one becomes available first. Sound like a good plan? Also looking at the AB-5200 for a bench. Think that's overkill or is there a better option would suggest? Thanks in advance for the feedback. 👍🏽
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 3 жыл бұрын
The AB5200 is a more "premium" bench, but one of the most affordable in that category. For the bars I think you'd like either bar, so in this case maybe get what comes in stock first.

@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
Initial specs look promising but some things are concerning like the factor has bearings as well (unwanted for power bars), a weight tolerance variance and a straightness accuracy rating. It also states aggressive knurl but lists less than .5mm knurl height. Prob not the worst bar out there but for the list price you can get better bars.

The problem with that video is that at that time the black zinc was still in good shape (it fades). My views have changed a bit in that time as I would rather sacrifice some more maintenance for a better feel and better looking bar. This also largely depends on the environment it's kept in.

Hey Brandon, great video! I made the mistake of not looking at tensile strength and looking at weight load (1000 pounds) before buying my first bar. I got a cap on-86b due to budget and it’s tensile strength is only 110k. It doesn’t have much bend or whip right now but the most I put on the bar is usually 365 for squats and deads for reps. Is there a danger to the bar deforming and even breaking... I don’t slam the bar when dropping or use it for extremely explosive movements? I’m looking to get the Bells of steel bare naked bar but they’re out of stock for now. Thanks again for the great content!
