Power BI Advanced Tutorial

Finished the first 3 tutorials. Excellent teaching style. Detailed explanations but still very simple. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants to get into Power BI. This series should be the first one before anyone decides to go to the next stage of other Power BI project available on the web. I am using the Desktop Free license and I was under impression that Power BI Service is free for individual learner but it is not free! When I tried to create an account for the Service, I was asked a corporate e-mail address which I do not have and it did not accept my personal Yahoo e-mail address. In contrast, Tableau free version comes with a free cloud account where I can publish my visualizations.

After declaring the variables in the meaures 2010 ,2011 and 2022 , once i use the multi row card visualization i recieve the following error , Cannot covert value 'January' of type text to type Date while processing column - dates[month] -> Orders[Orders date]. at 2:15, does anybody know why we started by clicking on the modeling tab instead of transform data? and, creating the column w/ the distinct numbers looks like the Order ID column was copied... so I"m wondering whats a realistic reason for needing to know how many order id's there are?

I guess somethings can be done without using power query so we didn’t click transform data,, not sure tho However we didn’t copy the Order ID column, if you noticed the rows in the new column are 1746 while OrderID in Order table has 2428 rows. It basically shows the distinct values. Several Products can be in the same order so they all will have the same OrderID and it will be repeated for each one. So thee realistic reason would be to know how many orders were made! I hope that made sense

I believe your explanation for quick measure is wrong. We are not getting the averges by customer segment in the visualization. What the measure did is - it took the base value i.e. average of total sales entirely, and then as we added totals per category, it made the category i.e the customer segment irrelevant, that is why you are seeing the distribution of that measure around customer segment showing the same value.

If anyone is also getting this: At 16:41 I got the error, "Loading blocked by failures with other queries." In one of the error prompts, the table that's responsible for the error can be seen as it's the one with more info. Opening PowerQuery and refreshing from there seemed to fix this problem for me. Was able to then "Close and Apply" in PQ and refresh again on desktop and it was fine...

I like the instructor's clear and articulate style. Unfortunately, the examples (at the 31 minute mark) regarding Average Sales Per Product Category returns the wrong result. There should not be an "ALLSELECTED" function at the end, because it removes the filters inside the query. Each category should have a different average not the same. To correct the DAX formula, remove the "ALLSELECTED" function, do small multiples with the product category, and you will then see the correct result.

Excellent tutorial and the very good communication by the tutor. I would suggest you to zoom in or enlarge the formula bar, sometimes the code you write at the formula bar looks to small - I have covered all sections and reviewing this now but my suggestions regards all parts.

Sir, How we can do the function similar to Indirect function in Excel, in power BI. For Ex. I am having a slicer with the name of all Indian states, If I don't select any thing from slicer, then in the table for ROW value , name of state should come and their population will come from measure. If I select any state from slicer , then in the table, respective district list should appear and there population. Please advise how we can do this.

QQQ: Date Table card is not showing in model view. Re-did Sample Superstore, everything is exactly as you have. Was able to edit relationship by right clicking Orders, making 1 to many relationship but Date Table catd still does not show in model view. Awesome, concise and crystal clear! Building Date table, is absolutely amazing. In addtion to year, quarter, month, I went on extracting the "day of week as number", weekday([date]), "week day as text", format([date], "ddd"), just the same logic with excel date time and text functions!

For me, trying to create the quick measure Average Sales by Customer Segment crashes Power BI when I bring up the dialog to change Sum of Sales to Average of Sales (as you do at 23:32). The dialog contents disappear and a blank grey box is shown, modal until I close it on the taskbar.

I found a solution to this provided by MS within the PowerBI community. Options - Global - Preview Features - uncheck (disable) Power BI Desktop Infrastructure update. Restart Power BI. This solved the issue for me. Thanks Mark
