As a PowerBI consumer I've found that this tool has a lot of potential. The obstacles that remain are the data cleansing and access to data variety volume and velocity requirements which still requires IT to be engaged in dashboard / report creation. To become an industry leader IT's role needs to be converted into a new paradigm. Data governance and infrastructure support. IT must transition out of the report / dashboard creation value chain to allow the value proposition of BI analytics to span the IT / Business operational chasm and to leverage IT resource capabilities by focusing their efforts on product development and support.

Hi. The objective of Power BI is to eliminate the need to approach IT and give the power of analytics in the hands of end users like us. Data clean up takes up more time than the actual analysis itself. Sad but true! In order to make the data cleanup process simple, Power BI contains the Query Editor (Get data - choose source and Edit). This is an extremely powerful tool for data cleanup - which can be used by end users - because it does not require any programming. You just follow probably the same process you would in Excel, but this one is more feature rich and menu driven. Try it out. Here are the articles I have posted on my blog about data cleanup using Power Query efficiency365.com/?s=power+query I also coach IT teams on how to democratize data delivery. One of the simplest things they can do is to give users the actual raw data when you click on Export to Excel type of options in system generated reports. Another is to use Data Catalog of Power BI to distribute clean raw data for all users.

If you're a more technical user, and used to SQL or C# I'd recommend using QueryStorm instead of Power BI, it's a plugin for Excel that gives you a sql editor and allows you to clean, query and modify data in Excel as if the data was in a database.

Sure. In fact, you could have added the Power BI and Power Query plug ins (from Microsoft) to 2010 and got the same features. Power BI Desktop is an independent tool which combines three Excel add-ins: Power Query, Power BI and Power View.

Great intro video! One thing I find is important for first timers is to ensure the data loaded into Power BI has the relevant formatting applied to each column of data. Otherwise Power BI does not allow those data reports to be generated.

Do to data tab. Select the city column. Change the category to City (Modelling tab).

Yes of course. You can write DAX in Power BI Desktop as well. Just choose New Column or New Measure and type DAX. If you have already written some DAX in Excel based Power Pivot window or Measures area, you can import the data model and DAX formulas as well as the Power View dashboards into Power BI Desktop. Use the File - Import menu to import from Excel. The syntax of DAX as well as Power Query is exactly the same.

Thanks Tom for your kind words. There are lot of videos and books on Power BI. I try to keep things simple without dumbing them down. Jargon is less important than concepts. Concept + operational skill is intertwined in a palatable manner. I have learnt editing myself to prevent communication loss between the subject matter expert and the video creation team. That's a very cool video and really helped to set up a demo dashboard. But I have some trouble vizualising the cities on a map. I have no filters applied, yet it only shows one city. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks. It is free actually unless you want to share it on the Power BI web site. But you can always store the PBIX on a cloud storage and share the link or even email smaller files. The only problem is that the recipient can also see the raw data.
